Dedication In 1988, while visiting a former CIA agent in Berlin, Germany, we began discussing the Thomas Sutherland/Terry Waite hostage situation and what it must be like to be held away from country, family, and friends for years without any form of communication. We wondered what it would be like had they been women. And then it began. I started to write a book about a woman being held in a small country as a political prisoner. I had to create the woman: a strong, educated woman who could withstand the hardships involved. There were questions. Why was she there? Where did she come from? Was she an academic? A politician?
