Blurb

The child came screaming into the world, a daughter, fragile and perfect. But when the first shift rippled through her tiny body, the chamber froze. The wolf that emerged in spirit was not hers. It was male. Broad-shouldered, silver eyed, a beast that should never have belonged to her blood.

The Seer’s voice cracked like thunder:

"A wolf born wrong. A spirit that will devour the bloodline. She is curse, not crown."

The midwives recoiled. One whispered, “Kill it before it grows.”

But Lysandra’s gaze was steel. She gathered the child against her breast, shielding her from the world’s verdict. “She is mine,” the Queen said, her voice trembling with fury. “And she will live.”

From the shadows, another figure stepped forward — Sorceress Varyn, the Keeper of Bones. Her presence chilled the chamber, her eyes gleaming with secrets older than the palace walls. She spoke not to the Queen, but to the child, as though the infant already understood.

"Two halves cannot walk the same path. But I can bind them. Hide the truth in blood and silence. She will be both, and neither."

The ritual was swift and terrible. Varyn carved sigils into the air with a blade of bone, each stroke dripping crimson from her own palm. She pressed the mark upon the newborn’s chest, whispering words that tasted of ash. The wolf’s male essence folded inward, sealed behind a veil of magic.

Cursed Birth
A black wound spilled lightning across the royal woods. Wolves howled in chorus, their voices rising like a dirge, as if the dom itself mourned what had not yet been lost. Inside the birthing chamber, Queen Lysandra gripped the silken sheets until her knuckles bled white. The midwives whispered prayers, their eyes darting toward the shadows where the Seer waited, cloaked in ash-gray robes. The air smelled of iron and rain, of endings disguised as beginnings. The child came screaming into the world, a daughter, fragile and perfect. But when the first shift rippled through her tiny body, the chamber froze. The wolf that emerged in spirit was not hers. It was a male. Broad-shouldered, silver-eyed, a beast that should never have belonged to her blood. The Seer’s voice cracked like thunder: "A wolf born wrong. A spirit that will devour the bloodline. "Two halves cannot walk the same path. But I can bind them. Hide the truth in blood and silence. She will be both, and neither." The ritual was swift and terrible. Varyn carved sigils into the air with a blade of bone, each stroke dripping crimson from her own palm. She pressed the mark upon the newborn’s chest, whispering words that tasted of ash. The wolf’s male essence folded inward, sealed behind a veil of magic. The storm outside broke into silence. The wolves ceased their howling, and the night died. Queen Lysandra kissed her daughter’s brow, though her lips trembled. “Araya Valenor,” she whispered. “You will be my light.” Varyn’s smile was thin, cruel, almost maternal. “She will be your ruin, too.” And so the princess was born as a child of duality, a secret wrapped in blood. The tribe slept unaware, while in the cradle of storm light, a curse began to breathe. --- The throne room smelled of iron and fur. Torches hissed against damp stone, their flames bowing to the draft that swept through the hall. The banners of Valenor hung heavy, stitched with the silver wolf that had ruled for generations. But tonight, that wolf was gone. He lay in the crypt below, his howl silenced. The council gathered in a semicircle, eyes sharp, voices sharper. They demanded an Alpha. A male wolf to claim the throne, to keep the packs from tearing each other apart. And so, the doors opened. Renar entered. The wolf’s paws struck the marble with the weight of inevitability. His shoulders broad, his eyes molten silver, his aura a storm of dominance. The courtiers bowed, some in reverence, others in fear. None dared question the heir. None saw the truth beneath the fur, that Renar was not born, but conjured. That beneath the mask of the Alpha, Princess Araya Valenor’s heart beat, steady and defiant. By day, she remained cloistered in her chambers, the fragile princess who “lacked the constitution” for council affairs. Her silence was her armor. Her invisibility, her shield. But by night, she became Renar "His Royal Alphaness the wolf who ruled with a voice that was not hers, a body that was not hers, a fury that was both hers and not hers. The council obeyed him. The packs bent their knees. And yet, cracks whispered beneath the surface. When Renar’s rage spilled too far, Araya woke with her hands trembling, her human mind echoing the wolf’s violence. Sometimes she smelled blood where none lingered. Sometimes she heard growls in her own voice. The Queen watched her daughter with eyes that betrayed nothing. She had built this deception, brick by brick, lie by lie. But each lie was a stone pressing against Araya’s chest. And in the northern woods, Varyn stirred. Her whispers carried on the wind, reminding Araya of the bargain sealed in blood. “Two halves cannot walk the same path. But one will always hunger for the other.” The council chamber was suffocating with incense and politics. Scrolls of treaties lay unfurled across the long oak table, each one demanding a signature, each one dripping with veiled threats. Araya sat silent in her human form, the “fragile princess” tucked into the corner, ignored as always. Her hands folded neatly, her gaze lowered, but inside, Renar prowled. The wolf’s dominance bled through her skin. She could feel it in the way the courtiers shifted uneasily, though none could name why. Her pulse throbbed with the memory of last night’s hunt, when Renar had torn through a rebel envoy with merciless precision. The blood was gone, but its smell clung to her. Commander Kael Thorne stood at her side, loyal shadow to the Alpha. His armor gleamed, his posture rigid, but his eyes lingered too long. He had begun to notice things: the faint tremor in Renar’s growl, the way the wolf’s scent carried both dominance and something softer, something human. That night, when Renar summoned the guard to the training yard, Kael obeyed. The moon was high, silver slicing through the clouds. Renar’s form towered over the men, his voice commanding, his presence undeniable. Yet Kael’s wolf stirred uneasily. He smelled contradiction; male and female, fury and compassion, a duality that made no sense. After the drills, Kael approached, his voice low. “Majesty,” he said, bowing his head. “Forgive me, but… there is something in your scent tonight. It is not what it was.” Renar’s silver eyes narrowed. The wolf’s growl rumbled like thunder. “And what will that be? You doubt your King, Kael?” Kael’s throat tightened. He dropped to one knee, torn between reverence and suspicion. “Never!!! I would follow you into death itself. And still… I must understand what I follow.” For a heartbeat, Araya’s human self surged beneath the wolf’s skin. Her voice almost broke through, softer, trembling, hers. But Renar crushed it, snapping his jaws inches from Kael’s face. “Loyalty does not question,” Renar snarled. Kael bowed deeper, though his eyes burned with unspoken questions. From the shadows of the courtyard, Lysandra watched. Her lips pressed into a thin line, her silence heavier than any blade. And far beyond, in the northern woods, Sorceress Varyn whispered to the wind: “The mask fractures. The wolf hungers. And hunger always finds a way.”
