THE SEVENTH DAY: 21 The knock on the door startled Janet and took her away from nostalgic memories of Layton’s first bid for the Senate. Those were exciting years filled with the exuberance of youth, when she and Layton believed anything was possible and the world was theirs for the taking. And take it they did, all the way to the White House beyond all odds. It was a spectacular trip, a long way from her origins, and a moon-shot away from her mother’s prognostication for her to become a secretary and marry a man who didn’t drink too much.
