PIPER’S POV
“Congratulations Mrs Stanford, you're three weeks pregnant!”
The word hit me like a gentle shock, both thrilling and terrifying.
“Pregnant?” I repeated as I took the test results from Doctor Sylvia, my heart racing fast with the possibility that I might have heard her wrong again. For five years, I've heard her wrongly, mistaking her negative answer for positivity, but the test results she handed to me back then, snapped out of my illusions.
I took a deep breath with my eyes closed before opening the test results. Lo and behold, my ears weren't faulty this time.
“You're three weeks pregnant, Mrs Stanford,” she repeated with a smile on her face.
Tears prickled at the corners of my eyes as my hands instinctively drifted to my flat stomach, as if I could feel the tiny life growing inside of me. For a moment nothing else existed, just the overwhelming joy of knowing there was a new life inside me.
“I can't believe… I'm going to be a mother!”
“I'm sincerely happy for you, Mrs Stanford.” Doctor Sylvia started. “This is your first pregnancy and it's likely to take a toll on you. You have to be careful and not to stress yourself at all.”
I nodded, listening with rapt attention, my smile never fading.
I imagined the look on Kevin’s face, the joy I hope to see when he realizes that the silence of the living room will be replaced with the wails and cries of a new born baby in nine months time.
I sniffed back the tears, thanked Doctor Sylvia and hurried out with my head swirling like a whirlwind of emotions.
“You look happy and bright!” My personal bodyguard, Emily commented.
“Yes, I am..” I replied with a chuckle getting into the car.
“That's great, Mrs Stanford. Would you mind sharing the great news?” she questioned, adjusting the seatbelt as she revs the car.
“Hmmm…not yet.”
“Yes, ma!” she replied and off we drove.
We drove in comfortable silence, and I found myself lost in the thought of the best way to break the news to Kevin that he was going to be a father very soon. I didn't want some cliché pregnancy reveal thingy and just then, an idea stuck me.
“Let's head to the store, I need to pick up a few things!” I said and Emily immediately turned the wheel around.
I walked around the store picking from ribbons to pins, scented candles and non alcoholic wine. I put a call through to our cook, telling her not to prepare dinner. Although she argued, she had no choice than to submit.
“You can go home after dropping me off,” I told Emily as she dropped the items in the boot.
“But ma,”
“No buts, Emily. I want to have a lone time with my husband this weekend. You can resume back on Monday, if I need you during the weekend, I'll put a call through.”
I took a last glance at the almost perfect dinning table, my heart racing with excitement. I adjusted the seating, making sure Kevin's chair faced me just perfectly, allowing us to be close enough to hold hands across the table if we wanted.
I placed a simple yet elegant white tablecloth over table, the soft fabric draped perfectly, adding a sense of warmth to the space. I chose our best dinnerware, porcelain plates with delicate silver rims, and polished silver cutlery. The wine glasses I picked were tall and crystal-clear, ready to catch the light of the candles that would soon surround us.
The subtle blend of vanilla and sandal wood from the scented candles were beginning to take over the dinning room.
I took a few steps away and turned off the light.
Omg! It looked perfect.
With the fairy lights dripping in blues and red, one would have thought it was a proposal dinner. I took out my phone, contemplating on whether to call Kevin or not, he should have been home by now.
I paced the room for a while as I calmed myself, he was just ten minutes late. As I waited, I went back in time to when we had just met.
Kevin Stanford was the best partner anyone could wish for. He had just been appointed as the head of Stanford group of companies when we met five years ago. And since then, he had earned his spot among the top ten most successful CEO in North Carolina. On several occasions, he has stood up to his mother, taking my side when she mocked me and encouraged him to take in a second wife. He had in flaws, but like they say, love is blind. Many attimes, I wonder what about me had attracted him to me that he isn't willing to let go.
The sound of a car driving into the compound jolted me out of my thoughts. “Daddy is back,” I whispered as I rubbed my belly.
I took a final look at the table and was satisfied with the outcome. My heart thumped fasted with nervousness as I walked past the curtains dividing the living room and dinning room. The footsteps on the walkway grew louder as he approached. I held my breath, slowly moving close to the entrance door. The sound of the door passcode beeped and I braced myself for the moment.
One… two… three…
I counted as I grasped the party popper, nervousness coursing through my veins. I raised the popper above my head, my eyes shut as I pulled the trigger.
“POP”
The noise erupted in the room and a rainbow of confetti exploded around me. But as the chaos settled and I opened my eyes, my gaze locked onto a figure that made my heart stumble. My face went blank as goosebumps broke out all over my skin.
“Hi,Twinny!” she said, waving her hand with a wild smile plastered across her face.
