PIPER’S POV
I stared in sheer disbelief at the one person I thought I'd see ever again. Her round pretty face and almond shaped eyes… I had to admit, she had done a perfect job duplicating my face.
“Don't look so shocked, Twinny!” she giggled. “Nice seeing you once again!”
“Sabrina!” I whispered the name I hadn't uttered in five years, suppressing my anger within me. “What are you doing here?”
“Come off it, Piper. Is that really how you greet the sister you haven't seen in years?” she c****d her head and pouted. “Well, I just got back in town and went to Kevin’s office to say hi. Thought it wouldn't be nice if I didn't stop by to see you, but unfortunately, you don't seem too happy to see me!”
My hands curled into a fist as I forced myself to listen to Sabrina’s gibberish talks. Memories I had buried long ago at the back of my mind surged back. I had loved and trusted her, but what had I gotten in return?
Sabrina and I were twins separated at birth for a reason best know to the nurse. We grew up raised by different families, while she blossomed in the riches of our parents, I sat at the roadside with a few other kids, begging for alms. Before my foster father died, he made me promise to go in search of my real parents, but when I did, my mother was long gone. And my father was on the deathbed, struggling to survive brain cancer.
Several tests were conducted for paternity verification which were successful, but my father was recasted at the position I met him. After narrating my ordeal to him, he felt guilty for not going in search of me and in turn, willed more than half of his assets to me, leaving Sabrina with a share she considered too small.
After his demise, I noticed Sabrina’s change towards me, we lived in the same house but she would constantly avoid and bully me. On several occasions when I tried to start a conversation with her, she shut me up and make fun of me.
This went on for weeks if not months and when I couldn't take it anymore, I approached her, promising to split my own share of our father’s assets in half. I showed her where I kept the original documents and assets transfer certificate, hoping it would help us bond, but that was the dumbest thing I'd ever done.
On our 22nd birthday, I woke up to a busy house with Sabrina out of sight. None of the house helps had seen her either, I put several calls across to her but none of them were answered. That day, I stayed up late until a few minutes to midnight before cutting the cake. Two passed by slowly with no words from her and I had to go report her missing at the police station.
Barely a month after Sabrina’s disappearance, a group of men in suits showed up at the house, demanding that I leave. They had documents proving the house had been sold with a forged signature in my name. As if that were not enough, they threatened to get me arrested for pretending when I had sold the house to them myself.
My jaw dropped to the floor as they played a video of me signing the documents, “Sabrina!” I seethed as anger surged within me. I searched the house for the safe with the documents, but it was nowhere to be found.
I almost ran mad when I was accused of theft at the bank. They claimed I had come to collect the jewelry and gold bars. My face in the CCTV footage replayed in my head as I dragged my feet to no where in particular.
Sabrina had stolen everything from me, when I had offered to share and now she had the effrontery to stand before me after causing me so much pain. She had the audacity to act like nothing happened and speak casually to me. A part of me wanted to pin her to the wall and squeeze life out of her, but Doctor Sylvia had warned against stress and I wouldn't want my little baby to see me as a monster. One thing I couldn't seem to understand was how she knew I was married to Kevin.
Had she been monitoring me all along?
“Your wife might need a moment to recover from the shock,” Sabrina said with a smile. “I'll take my leave now.”
“Thank you for stopping by, you can tell the driver to drop you off,” Kevin replied with a smile in a calm tone he only used with me.
“See you soon, Twinny!” Sabrina blew a mocking kiss as she walked out.
“What's going on, Kevin?” I asked, finally finding my voice.
Kevin didn't reply right away, he made sure the door was locked before turning to face me. He reached into his bag and tossed a stack of photos at my feet.
“I thought you were an angel,” he said bitterly. “Turned out I was wrong.”
I glanced at the photos of me, or rather, Sabrina, undergoing plastic surgery. The puzzle pieces from five years ago finally clicked into place. The reason why I had lost everything and why Sabrina looked exactly like me right now, it all became clear with the pictures. But why was Kevin trying to pin her crime on me? Had she cooked up stories for him?
I swallowed hard as I felt Kevin’s cold stare on me.
“Kevin, I can explain…” My voice trembled as I tried to defend myself.
“Explain?” Kevin interrupted pacing the room.
“For five years, stood by you. Do you know why I didn’t mind my family turning against me because of you?” he paused to catch his breath. “Because I knew you have no one on your side except me, even when you refused to tell me about your background, I never doubted you. But you…fuck.. You lied to me, Piper. You took me for a fool and deceived me.”
“Kevin, please, just calm down!” I pleaded softly.
“You know what,” Kevin started, his voice as cold as ice. “It's over between us”
“You know what,” Kevin started, his voice as cold as ice. “It's over between us.”
He turned to leave, but I dropped to my knees, grabbing his legs.
“Please Kevin, listen to me… I didn't do this!” I pleaded.
“Let go of my leg, Piper,” he said, his voice dangerously low. “Don't push me to be abusive, please.”
“Just a minute Kevin,” I pleaded, letting go of his leg. “For the sake of our love, please listen to me.”
Kevin sighed and paused for a while, running his fingers through his hair before turning to face me. He dropped to one knee, holding my chin in his hands. “I'm sorry honey, I won't be listening to any of those lies of yours. I'll have the divorce papers delivered to you in the morning, please do well to get out of my sight.”
