CHAPTER 3

KELVIN’S POV I was just about to close for the day when my secretary told me I had a visitor. I hesitated at first because I wanted to pick up flowers and chocolate at the store for my wife. Checking the time, I figured I had a few spare minutes before heading out, so I decided to see who it was. The shock on my face when I saw my wife walk into the office was second to none. She would rather meet with me at the coffee shop close to the company than come with me into my office. “It's an office not a lover’s corner,” she would scold. And here she was standing before me, hmmm… women. “Kevin’s wife!” I teased, pulling her into a hug and giving her a playful kiss. She hesitated. That should have been my first clue, but I was too blind to notice. “You should have told me you were coming.” I said, ushering her to a seat. “How are you? And how was your day?” I asked completely feeling at ease. “I was going to stop by at the store on my way home and grab a few things for you. So tell me, to what do I owe this visit,” I asked, sitting at the edge of the table. “I'm sorry Mr Kevin, but I'm not your wife,” the woman said. “Neither I'm I your husband,” I laughed , assuming she was joking. That's just how Piper and I are, always teasing each other. I was too oblivious to sense that something was wrong. “I'm Sabrina Lennon,” she continued, her voice steady. “The woman whose identity your wife stole.” That made me pause. “What are you talking about, babe? You’re Piper, not Sabrina. You didn’t even ask me how my day went, and now you’re stressing me,” I grumbled, still not believing her. “I’m not your wife, Mr. Kevin. I know I look like her, but… that’s because she stole my identity five years ago.” She reached into her bag and placed a few photos on my desk. “This woman here was your wife, getting a surgery to look like me” she stated. The things she told me were unbelievable, but the photos she showed were undeniable. I sat there, reeling, trying to process it all. "You're lying," I spat, trying to keep my composure. "My wife would never…" "Would never what?" she interrupted, her eyes locked on mine. "Steal someone's identity? Abduct them on their wedding day?" I felt a chill run down my spine. What exactly is going on? "Listen, I don't know what kind of game you're playing, but…" "Game?" Her voice rose. "You think this is a game? I'm the one who was supposed to marry you. She stole my life." I shook my head, trying to clear the fog. This is insane. "Prove it," I challenged. She let out a sad smile. "Remember the scar on your left foot? The one you said you got when you were younger.” My heart skipped a beat. Only Piper knew about that scar, or so I thought. "And what about our first date, the coffee shop where we met? Table number seventeen" My world began to crumble. How did this woman know these intimate details? "Who are you?" I demanded, my voice barely above a whisper. "I'm your wife," she replied, her eyes welling up with tears. "Or at least, I was supposed to be” I didn’t know what to believe, but I began to realize how little I actually knew about Piper. From the beginning, Piper had refused to talk much about her real family. She only ever mentioned her foster father, but vaguely. She had once told me she had a twin but claimed she didn’t know where she was. And now, here I was, staring at the woman who was supposedly that twin, the real Piper or Sabrina. I had been living with an imposter all these years, loving an imposter. I studied Sabrina closely. She looked just like Piper, but somehow even more stunning, with sharper features and a more defined figure. Their resemblance was uncanny. “Would you be willing to say all these things to her face?” I asked. “Only then would I believe you.” “Definitely,” she declared and we headed home together. The look on Piper’s face when she saw Sabrina said everything. She was frozen in shock, too stunned to speak. That silence spoke volumes. Sabrina’s story was true, and Piper was guilty. Now she wanted to apologize? After everything she had done, after deceiving me for five years and causing Sabrina so much pain? There was no way I could continue living with her, no way I could let her keep my name. I went into our room, packed a few clothes and important documents. I picked up the photograph lying on the dresser, I couldn't believe I had been deceived all along. All the smiles and laughter had all been fake. The confessions and words of affirmations had been lies all along. I shut my eyes as my broken heart shattered into pieces and a tear rolled down my cheeks. Piper’s wails followed me as I walked out the door, but I didn’t turn back. I just couldn’t bring myself to spend another night under the same roof with her. I went straight to my office where I knew I would be till I was able to calm myself. I placed a call to my lawyer, with no doubt in mind. I was getting a divorce.
