CHAPTER ONE

Agnes stood in front of her dad, with so much grief written all over her face, with an extreme feeling of revulsion, and yelled at him. “I've always listened to you all my life. You dictated my every move from the beginning of my existence. Right from the school I attended, without considering if I wanted it or not.” “And now, you want to force me into an affair with the son of Barr. Jerry, Donald, because he's your childhood friend, against my wish.” “Agnes' father, with so much intensity in his voice, said;” “Agnes, now listen to me and listen well.” “I am your father, and I know what's best for you. Every one of my intentions towards you is good, to make you live comfortably in life without any trace of stress.” “Donald is the only man you can settle with, and no other person. Whatever I say is what you will do.” “Her father left with an intense, raging mood hovering around the atmosphere.” “Agnes broke down in tears and said to her mom.” “Mom! Really?” “Aren't you going to talk to Daddy?” “In this 21st century, where is it heard that parents still match-make a mate for their children?” “You know what! I'm done with all of these in this house, and I know what to do.” “Her mother compassionately spoke to her and said,” “Agnes, my dear.” “Your father loves you. He wants the best for you. I just want you to consider Donald, after all, he is a nice guy.” Agnes reverted with a fainting voice, “No, Mom!” “I can't believe you are telling me to consider Donald. Have you forgotten I'm in a relationship with Alfred?” Her mother said audibly; “Agnes, you will do only what your father says you should do, and that is final.” “And the earlier you cut off whatever you have with Alfred, the better for you.” Her mother walked out to the sitting room. Seated on the couch in an unhappy state. She called out to her maid and shouted her name, “Sandra” “She was deep in thought and expectant of Sandra. So she could order her a glass of juice.” She sat there for 10 minutes without knowing the time had passed and then wondered the reason Sandra hadn't come to her. “She yelled the second time, “Sandra" This time again, no response! “She became worried as she wondered the reason Sandra left her with no response.” Sandra has stepped out to get a recharged card in a nearby shop. She met with Alfred as she approached the gate. “Bro Alfred, good afternoon, sir” “Good afternoon, dear Sandra, said Alfred.” Alfred teasing her with an attempt to pat her buttocks said; “What are you eating? You this girl! You are getting bigger in strategic places every time I set my eyes on you.” “Mrs. George went out round the house calling Sandra's name.” Sandra blushing foolishly in the euphoria of his vain words, heard Mrs George call her name out loud. “Sandra trembled at the hearing of the voice of her madam; she was convinced that she might have been calling her before now.” She left Alfred and ran to the sight of her madam and said; “Madam, here I am! I'm sorry, I stepped out to get a recharge card. I should have informed you I was going out, but I left since you were discussing with Aunty Agnes, and I didn't want to interrupt.” Mrs George, very furious, said angrily to her, " You stood me up in search of you in this hot sun. How dare you! “By the way, you've been eavesdropping on our conversation. You no longer mind your business in this house, right? I can see you have found a better option” Sandra looking very surprised, soliloquized and said, “What could have happened because it was so unoften of Mrs George to react this way? She could immediately tell it was a transferred aggression.” Mrs George screamed out loud, “Are you not the one I'm talking to?” Sandra immediately went down on her knees and pleaded: “I'm so sorry, ma. This won't repeat itself, I promise, ma.” Mrs George left her sight almost relieved because she found her regardless. Sandra said: “Madam, what would you have me do, ma?" Mrs George said in a motion, "I needed a glass of juice, but I've lost my appetite” Alfred, still at the gate, put a call through to Recca to inform her he is at the gate. Agnes became relieved and ordered the gateman to let him in. Sule immediately opened the gate for Alfred. Sule greeted, “Good afternoon, sir" Alfred, still angry that he couldn't have a good time with Sandra because her madam interrupted, snubbed Sule and went straight to Agnes' room. On getting to Agnes' room, he collided with her father, and he questioned: “Young man, who are you? In whose order are you here?" Agnes heard her father's voice and became more frightened. Alfred went blank without having words to say. He was immediately shut out of words. He forgot to ask Agnes if her dad was home. He does sneak into the house because he doesn't want to meet Agnes’ dad. In the attempt to give a response, he began to stammer. Agnes came to her dad and responded, “Dad, this is my boyfriend. This is the one whom I love and have chosen to spend the rest of my life with. His name is Alfred.” Recca's dad looked at Alfred and ordered him out of his presence and never to return. Alfred looked at Reeca, and Reeca signaled to him to go in the hope that they would see him afterward. Alfred left. Recca's father looked at Reeca and said; “This rubbish must never repeat itself. Have I made myself clear?" Reeca said, “Dad, I beg you. Let me choose what I want this time and I promise to make you proud." "You can only choose what I want every time,” her father replied. Recca dashed into her room and shut her door. Sandra is done cooking. She is done setting the table for the launch. She approached Agnes' door. “Aunty Agnes,” she called out as she got closer to her door. Aunty Agnes immediately followed the sound of a knock by Sandra. Agnes seemed not to have an appetite. She just wants to be left alone. She needs time to process the whole thing. She was indeed lost in thought. Sandra applied more force to the knocking, and it became more intense. She called out; “Aunty Agnes” Agnes heard her voice and screamed out, “Get out of here, you idiot.” Sandra was furious to know what was happening, but she said; “Aunty Agnes, I'm here to tell you that I've set the table for your lunch. Kindly come down now to eat so it won't get cold.” Agnes screamed, “I said get out. Leave this place. I am not eating.” Agnes’ father and mother are set on the table, awaiting Agnes to come down to join them at the table. All attempts to wait for her proved abortive. Agnes’ mother excused herself from the table to go see Agnes so she could come down to eat. Agnes' mother left her phone on the dining table. A few seconds after she went out, her phone started ringing ceaselessly and annoyingly, as the caller would not give up calling. Agnes' father wondered who this caller could be and how urgent the matter could be that he/she wouldn't just give up dialing the number. He attempted to pick up the call, hoping to be someone worth it, but a private number was displayed, and he became more concerned. He picked up the call, and the person was on air for 5 minutes without uttering a word. Alfred hung up. Agnes' father is not terrified at all. “If this person had something magnificent to say, he or she wouldn't have acted as a coward”. He muttered. “Mom, please, spare me these minutes I want to eat out. I'll be fine.” Agnes said to her mother “C’mon, you don't have to. Food is set in the dining. Let's dine and wine as a family.” Her mother said “Mom, spare me, please" She shouted "Okay, I'll let this pass.” Her mother responded as she took her leave. “My dear, She said she wants to grab something at the restaurant.” Said Agnes’ mother to her husband “You mean, Agnes?” He muttered “Yes” She replied “Has she had any complaints about Susan's food recently?” He asked in surprise “Oh, no. The taste of her food is evergreen.” She responded with a smile.
