chapter 1: A once- happy family
Twenty years ago, Bethany Rayes had everything.
She was the precious daughter of a wealthy family, living in a mansion others only dreamed of. Her parents adored her, her little brother followed her everywhere, and life was filled with laughter and warmth.
But paradise never lasts forever.
The cracks began the moment Ellen stepped into their home. She was just a maid, hired to serve quietly in the shadows. But her eyes were too sharp, her smile too daring, and her ambition too dangerous.
Beth had seen it even as a child—the way her father lingered when Ellen walked past, the way her mother’s voice rose in anger whenever Ellen’s name was mentioned.
Soon the house was no longer filled with laughter but with screams and arguments.
Her mother’s tears became daily. Her father’s voice turned harsh. And Ellen? She stood in the middle of it all, feeding the fire with her poisonous charm.
Beth clung to her younger brother, Thomas, only five years old, whispering promises that everything would be okay. But nothing was okay.
The fever came suddenly, stealing Thomas’s smile and his tiny heartbeat. Beth read him stories until the end, her voice trembling as she begged him to stay. But death was merciless. Thomas left her behind.
Her mother broke first, her mind shattering under grief and betrayal. Her father drowned in debt, tricked and manipulated by Ellen’s lies. The proud man who once carried Beth on his shoulders became a hollow shell.
And then came the night that destroyed everything.
Beth watched as her father climbed the rooftop, his eyes empty of hope.
“Papa!” she screamed, her voice tearing from her throat.
He looked down at her, sorrow carved into his face. “I’m sorry, Beth.”
Then he stepped into nothingness.
The sound of his body hitting the ground still haunted her every night.
The mansion that once stood as their paradise became their graveyard. Her mother was taken away to a hospital, screaming her children’s names. And Beth, only eight years old, was dragged into an orphanage, her world ripped apart.
That night, curled on a narrow bed with Thomas’s toy rabbit in her arms, Beth swore a vow.
“Ellen… I’ll never forgive you. One day, you’ll pay for every tear I’ve shed.”
And so began the birth of a new Bethany Rayes.
