This is peculiar, I don't normally remember my dreams but this time It was weird. I could recall everything even the tiniest details. I also have insomnia which doesn't add up. By the way, who's Mara? And why does she sounds familiar like I have heard her name before?
"Steve... Steven!"
I was too preoccupied with my thoughts that I wasn't aware someone is calling me. Daniel stops in front of me catching his breath. He looks like he has been running for a while.
"God, you walk too fast..." He complained.
"Hey what's up"
"Come on, Jamie and Erika are waiting for us in the cafeteria" He didn't wait for my reply as he paved his way through the crowd.
We both got there immediately and saw the couples seating near the cafeteria doors. They were arguing about something but when they both saw us coming they initially stop and gave each other stink eyes. Jamie looks pissed while Erika looks defensive. I don't know how to describe that but judging on her facial expression, she looks like she has done something bad that pisses her girlfriend yet she still wants to justify her actions. No matter what that is. I just hope it doesn't get worse. I know they are not the picture-perfect of a couple but it would be sad to see them separated like the last time. Believe me, when I say this, it was a mess. Even the school's guidance counselor had to intrude because both of them started failing their classes. Jamie got it worse when the school founds out she's selling joints to her classmates. So both of them—ending things together is like inviting catastrophe to our circle.
"Are you guys ok?" I asked but they didn't answer.
"Let them, maybe they need to cool off" Daniel whispered in my ear. He definitely knows something.
I gave him the 'what's happening' stare but he just shrugged. Obviously, he's faking it but the way the girls both stare at us makes sense that I should let this go... for now.
"So... you guys bought anything?" I asked again. Trying to ease the tension in the air.
"Not hungry" Jamie answered shortly while her girlfriend remained mute the entire period. We just sat there with awkward silence in the air like children at the dining table when their parents are going through a divorce. It was painful. Daniel commented something about how hard it is taking chemistry but all he got from us is a soft sob and a grunting noise. Erika run away the moment the bell went on, Jamie didn't run after her. She just sat there, covering her face with her girlfriends' handkerchief. I could definitely hear her sobbing.
I was running late for my next class. When It took me ten minutes to comfort my friend as I watch the crowd dissipate another minute to waste chaperoning her to her class. After a few minutes of running in my flat shoes. I got there in the middle of a lesson with Dr. Harrison, our Entomology Professor. He looks disappointed in me but he didn't yell nor punish me for being late. He just stand there waiting for my reason.
"I'm sorry sir, I got a stomach ache" I answered nervously while the whole class giggled. I got to admit, I have a lot of nerve to say that. It was embarrassing.
"I'm hoping your ok now, take a seat" I nod before entering the classroom with a pink flush of embarrassment on my face.
I may be average in terms of academics but I was interested in my classes. We have a small farm near the forest. My mother inherited it from her maternal grandparents who were known as the only farmers in Green Heights. For now, Roland is taking care of it. But once I finish college, I'll guarantee that I'll take over. Roland can help me, I hope. But I know his best interest isn't scooping poop in the pigpen. I have a hunch that he'll leave us once I get out of college. He may or may not start his music journey in Montreal, I remember he used to sing with his bandmates in high school. But today is not the day he holds a microphone. Which is unfortunate.
Time went like a blur, and I still look like I needed coffee in my system. My hair was a mess. The wind tossled it so hard that I look like I recently escaped a mental hospital. And the clothes I wore have a huge crease from—god knows where. Cause I certainly not a god. It just pops off randomly while I'm currently indisposed of my surroundings. Now I'm here, under the safety of the waiting shed from the big fat clouds' rain. Alone, waiting for the bus to arrive.
I pulled my phone and sent a text in our group chat. But no one bothers to reply. I guess they were all busy with their things. Its already past five and I have no idea why the bus hasn't arrived yet. If I wait in here any longer I might freeze from the cold. I was about to charge the rain when I heard footsteps coming. Like a bundle of golden threads, each and every last of his hair swayed with the cold wind. His blue eyes pierce through me and I was left here standing with an open mouth. There he walks away, without batting a single eye.
"Hey!" I shouted. I can take another embarrassment for today but I will never die here from the cold.
He stopped for a moment.
This is my chance, I walk towards him. Gratitude in my heart thinking that Augustus Flint the golden boy is not bad after all. If he agrees to share with me his umbrella that is. But I spoke to soon, the moment I was a few steps towards him. He leans forward and runs away.
"What the...."
