Prologue
Henrietta Jon could be heard sobbing in the bathrooms. Again.
I was sure it was her because in the first three months that I attended Green Mountain High School, I had already witnessed Henrietta sobbing in the restroom on two separate occasions. Even though Henrietta was eighteen, two years older than I was, she had a very distinctive sob that was high-pitched and breathy like that of a young child.
I had done so in the past, reasoning that it was every girl's right to occasionally cry in a public restroom, so I decided to leave her alone this time.
However, tonight was the night of the prom, and there was something exceptionally depressing about crying while dressed formally. In addition to that, I'd come to have a soft spot for Henrietta. There was a girl who looked exactly like her at every single school that I had ever attended (nineteen and counting). And despite the fact that I may have been an oddball, no one was ever cruel to me; most of the time, they simply ignored me. Henrietta, on the other hand, served as the class's go-to target for physical a***e. For her, school had been nothing but a never-ending cycle of having her lunch money stolen and being subjected to cruel remarks.
I peered under the door of the stall and noticed a pair of feet wearing sandals with yellow straps. "Henrietta?" I knocked on the door in a very subdued manner and gave the call. "What's the matter?"
After opening the door, she confronted me with a furious expression and eyes that were red with anger.
"What's the matter? Do you happen to see anyone who might be interested in going to the prom with me, Sarah? It's my senior year, and tonight is the big dance."
"Um . . . no. However, seeing how you are in the ladies' room, I thought—"
She stood up and asked, "What?" as she wiped her nose with a large wad of toilet paper. "What are you talking about?" That my date is out there looking forward to seeing me?" She let out a snort.
"Please. I told my parents that I had a date, but that was a lie. She slapped at the yellow taffeta as if it were a bug she was trying to kill. "So they bought me this dress," she said, "and I told them my date was meeting me here, so they dropped me off." She gestured as if she were trying to kill a bug.
I just... I couldn't tell them that I wasn't invited to my senior prom. I just couldn't do it. It would have been extremely upsetting for them." She showed a knowing smirk. "Can you believe how pitiful that is?"
I responded by saying "It's not that pathetic." "A lot of girls go to the prom by themselves."
She gave me an icy stare. "Do you have a date?"
I did have a date. Even though it was with Chase Miller, who was possibly the only student at Green Mountain High School who was less popular than I was, it was still considered to be a date. In addition, my mother expressed her delight at the news that someone had inquired about me.
She interpreted it as me finally making an effort to fit in with the crowd.
My mother placed a high priority on having a normal social life.
I couldn't help but notice Henrietta as she stood there in her yellow dress and wiped her nose, and before I could stop myself, I blurted out something that was completely idiotic: "I can help."
Henrietta's eyes were red and puffy as she looked up at me. "How?"
I pulled her to her feet by putting my arm through hers and looping it around my own. "It is imperative that we go outside."
After using the restroom, we emerged and made our way through the packed gymnasium.
As I led Henrietta through the large double doors and out into the parking lot, I noticed that she had a wary expression on her face.
She said as she held her small yellow clutch close to her body and spoke, "If this is some sort of prank, I have pepper spray in my purse." "If this is some sort of prank, I have pepper spray in my purse."
"Relax." I did a quick scan to make sure there was no one else in the parking lot.
Even though it was the end of April, there was still a chill in the air, and both of us shivered in our dresses despite the fact that we were dressed appropriately. "Okay," I responded as I turned back to face her. Who would you choose to go to the prom with if you could pick anyone you wanted?
She asked, "Are you attempting to torment me in any way?"
"All you have to do is respond to the inquiry."
She mumbled something under her breath as she stared at her yellow shoes and asked, "Jason Reed?"
I wasn't surprised in the least. President of the Student Government Association, captain of the football team, and a total hunk... Jason Reed was the kind of guy that nearly every girl would choose to take to the prom with her.
"So, let's move on. It's Jason all right, "I mumbled something while cracking my knuckles. I closed my eyes as I raised my hands to the heavens and pictured Henrietta being held by Jason. She was wearing a bright yellow dress, and he was wearing a tuxedo. After only a few seconds of concentrating on that picture, I started to feel a slight tremor in the ground beneath my feet, and it felt as though water was rushing all the way up to my hands when they were spread out. After that, I heard Henrietta let out a gasp just as my hair began to come loose from my shoulders.
When I opened my eyes, I was greeted by a sight that was precisely what I had wished for. A massive dark cloud was churning overhead, and within it, purple-tinged flashes of light could be seen moving around. I continued to focus my attention, and as I did so, the cloud began to spin faster and faster until it became a perfect circle with a gap in the middle.
On my twelve-year-old birthday, I made my very first doughnut, and at the time, I referred to it as "The Magic Doughnut."
Henrietta ducked down in the space between two cars, raising her arms above her head. But by that time it was too late to turn back.
The void in the middle of the cloud was filled with a piercingly brilliant green light.
I tightened my fingers as I concentrated on that light and the image of Jason and Henrietta. I then watched as a bolt of green lightning shot out of the cloud and raced across the sky. It vanished into the thicket behind the trees.
As soon as the cloud dissipated, Henrietta steadied herself and stood up. "W-what in the world was that?" She made her way over to me with wide eyes. "Are you some kind of sorceress or something?"
I gave a shrug, despite the fact that the power I had just released was still giving me a pleasant buzz. Magic drink is what my mother always refers to it as. "It didn't even matter," I responded. "Let's go inside now," the leader said.
When I came back inside the building, Chase was lounging around by the punch table.
He directed his question toward Henrietta and inquired, "What was that about?" She appeared to be confused as she stood on her tiptoes and looked around the dance floor.
I responded by picking up a glass of punch and saying, "Oh, she just needed some air."
My hands were trembling, and my heart was still beating extremely fast.
Chase responded, "Cool," bobbing his head in time with the beat of the music. "Wanna dance?"
Henrietta sprinted up to me and grabbed my arm before I could give a response. She remarked that he was nowhere to be found. "That... that thing you did, didn't it make him my prom date?"
"Shhh! Yes, it did, but you'll need to be patient about it for the time being. Believe me when I say that Jason will locate you as soon as he arrives at this location."
We did not need to wait very long at all.
When there was suddenly a loud bang that reverberated throughout the gym, Chase and I had just reached the middle of our first dance.
Children shrieked and ducked under the snack table as they heard a rapid succession of loud pops that sounded almost exactly like gunshots. I watched as the punch bowl crashed to the ground, sending crimson liquid flying in every direction.
But it turned out that the popping sounds weren't coming from a g*n at all; they were coming from balloons.
Hundreds of them all together. Whatever it was that had transpired resulted in the massive balloon arch plummeting to the ground. I watched as a solitary white balloon made its way through the mayhem and ascended into the gym's ceiling rafters.
When I turned around, I saw a number of the instructors rushing toward the exits.
Which were no longer present in the area.
That was as a result of an accident involving a silver Land Rover that had gone through them.
Jason Reed struggled to get out of his seat as the driver. He was bleeding profusely on the gleaming hardwood floor as he yelled, "Henrietta! HENRIETTA!" despite the fact that he had cut both his forehead and his hand.
"Holy crap," Chase muttered under his breath.
Vivinne Raoul, Jason's date, climbed out the window of the passenger side of the vehicle. She was crying her eyes out. She screamed, "He's completely insane!" "He was perfectly healthy until all of a sudden there was this light and... and..." She started crying and laughing uncontrollably again, and my stomach began to turn.
"HENRIETTA!" Jason did not stop screaming and searching the facility frantically. When I turned to look around, I noticed Henrietta hiding under one of the tables with her eyes incredibly wide open.
I thought I was being very careful this time. This is getting easier for me to do!
Henrietta was discovered by Jason, who then pulled her out from under the table.
"Henrietta!" He flashed a broad smile that lit up his entire face, which was incredibly unsettling given all the blood on his face. I can't say that I blamed Henrietta for how loudly she was screaming.
Coach Conall, who was working as a chaperone, was the first to arrive on the scene and grabbed Jason by the arm.
But Jason quickly turned around while still holding Henrietta in one hand and struck Coach Conall across the face with a backhand. The coach, who stood six feet two inches tall and easily weighed more than one hundred pounds, was sent flying backwards.
After that, chaos reigned throughout the land.
People were running for the exits, more teachers were surrounding Jason, and Henrietta's screams had taken on an urgent and high-pitched quality. Only Chase appeared unfazed by the situation.
He exclaimed, "Awesome!" as he watched two young women climb over a Land Rover and exit the building where they had been working out. " Carrie prom!"
Even though he was already on one knee, Jason maintained his grip on one of Henrietta's hands and continued to do so. Because there was so much screaming, I couldn't tell for sure, but I believe that he was singing to her.
Henrietta's shrill screams had subsided, but she was still rummaging around in her purse looking for something.
"Oh, no," I moaned in response. I started running in their direction, but I slipped on the grass and fell in the middle of the punch.
Henrietta quickly produced a canister of a bright red liquid and sprayed it directly into Jason's face.
His song came to an abrupt end in a jumbled wail of agony. Henrietta was forced to flee after he let go of her hand in order to scratch his eyes.
He yelled after her, "It's okay, baby!" as he chased after her. "You don't have to open your eyes for me to see you! Henrietta, I look at you with the eyes of my heart, and I see you! My HEART!"
Great. Not only was my spell ineffective, but it was also far too powerful.
While the mayhem that I had caused raged around me, I sat in the pool of punch that had been created.
My algebra teacher, Mrs. Davison, stumbled by while yelling into her cell phone as a solitary white balloon floated by my elbow "I specifically referred to Green Mountain High! I'm not sure. Maybe a fire truck or an ambulance? A team from the SWAT? Just send somebody!"
After that, I became aware of a scream. "It was in fact she! Sarah Layton!"
Henrietta was visibly shaking as she pointed her finger in my direction.
Henrietta's words reverberated throughout the vast gym even though there was a lot of background noise.
"She's a witch! She really is a witch!"
I heaved a sigh. "Not again."
