A walnut to crack
chapter 1 A walnut to crack Jackie POV: It took me a while to process everything. At first I thought it was a birthday party or maybe a normal surprise from him. The candlelight, hanging chandeliers, kaleidoscope illuminating different colours, red petals on the floor and on the wall, was a banner written "Becky Ryans will you marry me" it was well written in italics. Turning to look behind me, Nick was behind me on his knees with a diamond ring well encased in glass box. I couldn't tell why I was crying or why my lips were so heavy to say yes. All I could was nod my head as I stretched my hands for him. People started cheering and clapping and that's when I realised my friends and his were there. Everyone was congratulating us. " This is my promise to you, that I'll never hurt but leave to make you happy . Thank you for allowing me to be your man. I love you,"he said softly. " I love you too," I cried. He hugged me tightly that I could feel his heartbeat and the strong cologne. From my guess, it smelt expensive. Lucy my friend, then shouted " my friend us finally getting married!" Not caring how people looked at her she came and hugged me too. Nick on the other hand,,,couldn't hide his happiness. He shook the champagne and popped it open,,,some pouring on the floor. "Cheers to the love of my life!" He announced. We had fun and celebrated our engagement, I can't deny I was pretty drank and tired. The tranquil environment and the bright sun that penetrated through my glass window woke me up. My head felt like a whirlpool, it took me a while to get acquinted to the bright light. Beside me was Nick snoring like a cat.' How did I reach here?' I'm quitting drinking again. But being alone gave me the chance to reflect everything. I know that this is what I always wished but am I really ready for settling down with one man. This thought brought the memories that reminded me who I used to be. A party girl who never cared what people think. Those times when I and Lucy would sneak the hostels abd go to club and come back at dawn drunk and confused. We would shout and laugh loudly. Sometimes people complained about it but who cares. Just then, Rowan flushed my mind. Damn it! Not now,,,not him. The thought of him gave me butterflies and that was wrong or maybe not. But he was just special to me but again I hated him. I remember the first day we met. At the club, I wasn't that sober. Lucy had left with some guy and left me alone. Just then, Rowan came. At first I ignored him and continued drinking. He then ordered for another tequila. " Hey lady would you mind if I buy you a drink?" His deep voice drew my attention. Pretending not to be affected I gave him a stern look. "Excuse me? Are you talking to me or her. "He then laughed and shook his head. Why is he laughing ? "Am I funny or I have four eyes," I pouted. "No you just amaze me," he laughed," If i can see clearly its only you and I on this table. " Looking around, it's when I realised that we were just two on this high table. He again asked if I could accept his drink, being a free tequila I accepted. He was so entertaining and a good company. I ended up forgetting that it was past midnight yet Lucy was no where to be seen. Rowan offered to take me home but that was not what I wanted. "I won't mind being your chauffeur for the night," he said. "Umm,,,um,,,its ok. I'll just find ,,,,just find,,,a cab," I stammerd feeling dizzy. "You seem drunk and right now it's not safe. I won't hurt you trust me," he pleaded. Giving up I finally agreed to his request. I couldn't stop myself from looking at that well built body. His scent was that of an expensive perfume. I guess it's a dunhill. Then his hands were just the exert size I loved.
