Behold, you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now appoint for us a king to judge us like all the nations." But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, "Give us a king to judge us." And Samuel prayed to the Lord .
1 Samuel 8:5-6 ESV
A knock came to the room of Saul's room when he was eating, now donkeys of Kish, Saul's father, were lost. So Kish said to his son, "Take one of the young men with you, arise, go and look for the donkeys." He was just finished eating when his father came in and he was talking to his son about how to shepherd the flocks so as he got up his son suddenly said to him. "Papa let me come with you as you find the donkeys." The boy have this twinkle in his eyes as he was looking at his papa but hos father replied saying, "you are to take care of your mama and make sure the horse and sheep are taken care of." His father said with a small smile on his face, with a proud look on his Saul's face as he looks as his son. He went from hill to city with his servant because of the donkeys and as he was in the land of Azuph he asked his servant to go back with him because his father might worry but his servant said "there is a man of God here in these town where we can ask him where to go from here" and there they went with what they have to present to the seer or the man of God.
Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on his head and kissed him and said, "Has not the Lord anointed you to be prince over his people Israel? And you shall reign over the people of the Lord and you will save them from the hand of their surrounding enemies. And this shall be the sign to you that the Lord has anointed you to be prince over his heritage. When you depart from me today, you will meet two men by Rachel's tomb in the territory of Benjamin at Zelzah, and they will say to you, 'The donkeys that you went to seek are found, and now your father has ceased to care about the donkeys and is anxious about you, saying, "What shall I do about my son?"' Then you shall go on from there farther and come to the oak of Tabor. Three men going up to God at Bethel will meet you there, one carrying three young goats, another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a skin of wine. After that you shall come to Gibeath-elohim, where there is a garrison of the Philistines. And there, as soon as you come to the city, you will meet a group of prophets coming down from the high place with harp, tambourine, flute, and lyre before them, prophesying. Then the Spirit of the Lord will rush upon you, and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man. Now when these signs meet you, do what your hand finds to do, for God is with you. Then go down before me to Gilgal. And behold, I am coming down to you to offer burnt offerings and to sacrifice peace offerings. Seven days you shall wait, until I come to you and show you what you shall do." When he turned his back to leave Samuel, God gave him another heart. And all these signs came to pass that day. 1sam10:1-10
Saul became king before the congregation of Israel but yet he still hidden himself for he found himself unworthy of the calling God has given him. As he was hiding he asked the Lord inspite of all the signs that approved the word of the Lord to Saul. "Lord will your servant truly be king over Israel?" And just like that Samuel found him in his hiding place and yet he doubted.
As they went home from the meeting of the anointing of the new king, Jonathan his son had a smile on his face thinking what could his father have done to have been entrusted with such a great responsibility. He was proud of his father as he went to the house of Scribes so that he may have a copy of the book of the law of the Lord.
