The night everything changed
The grand ballroom of the Silverstone packhouse glittered like something out of a dream. Crystal chandeliers hung from the vaulted ceiling, casting warm light over the crowd of werewolves dressed in their finest evening wear. The annual pack celebration was always the most important social event of the year, but tonight felt different. Tonight felt magical. Lily Chen smoothed down the skirt of her dress for the hundredth time, feeling out of place among the elegantly dressed pack members. Her simple navy blue dress had been a splurge from her modest nurse's salary, but compared to the designer gowns around her, it looked plain. At twenty-three, she was used to being invisible in Silverstone Pack. No important bloodline, no special abilities, just an orphan who worked hard at the pack clinic and kept her head down. She shouldn't have come tonight. She'd almost stayed home with a good book and chamomile tea, her usual Friday night routine. But her coworker Sarah had insisted, practically dragging her to the event. "You need to live a little, Lily," Sarah had said. "You're young. You should be having fun, not spending every night alone in your apartment." Now, standing near the refreshment table with a glass of champagne she barely touched, Lily wondered if Sarah had been wrong. She watched pack members laugh and dance, forming clusters of friends and family. Everyone seemed to belong somewhere. Everyone except her. The music shifted to something slower, more sensual. Couples moved onto the dance floor, swaying together in the dim light. Lily took a small sip of her champagne, the bubbles tickling her nose. The alcohol made her feel warm and slightly dizzy. She wasn't much of a drinker. "You look lonely." The deep voice came from behind her, sending a shiver down her spine. Lily turned and her breath caught in her throat. Alpha Damien Cross stood less than two feet away, his silver eyes fixed on her with an intensity that made her knees weak. At twenty-seven, he was the youngest alpha in the northern territories and the most powerful. He'd taken control of Silverstone Pack five years ago after his father's brutal murder, transforming it from a struggling pack into an empire. Everyone feared him. Everyone respected him. And he was absolutely beautiful. Damien stood at least a foot taller than her petite frame, his broad shoulders filling out his custom black suit perfectly. His dark hair was styled back from his sharp, handsome face, and those silver eyes seemed to see straight through to her soul. He radiated power and authority, making her wolf whimper and bow inside her mind. "Alpha Cross," Lily managed to say, her voice coming out shakier than she'd like. She lowered her gaze respectfully, as was proper when addressing the alpha. "I didn't expect you to speak to me." "Look at me, Lily." She blinked in surprise. He knew her name? Her brown eyes lifted to meet his silver ones, and the intensity there made her heart race. "How do you know who I am?" she asked softly. A slight smile tugged at the corner of his mouth, the first hint of warmth she'd ever seen from the notoriously cold alpha. "You work in my pack clinic. You're one of the best nurses we have. Of course I know who you are." Lily felt heat rise to her cheeks. "I'm surprised you notice the clinic staff at all." "I notice everything about my pack." His gaze traveled over her face, lingering on her lips before meeting her eyes again. "Dance with me." It wasn't really a question. Alphas didn't ask, they commanded. But something in his tone made it feel less like an order and more like an invitation. An invitation Lily knew she should refuse. Nothing good could come from dancing with Alpha Damien Cross. They existed in completely different worlds. But the champagne made her bold, and his silver eyes made her forget every reason why this was a bad idea. "Okay," she whispered. Damien's large hand enveloped her small one as he led her onto the dance floor. Lily was aware of the stares following them, of the whispers that rippled through the crowd. The invisible orphan girl was dancing with the alpha. It was scandalous. It was unexpected. It was perfect. Damien pulled her close, one hand settling on her lower back while the other held her hand gently. They began to move to the music, and Lily was surprised by how gracefully he danced. Everything about Damien was controlled and precise, even this. "You're tense," he murmured, his breath warm against her ear. "Relax, Lily. I don't bite." She couldn't help the small laugh that escaped her. "You're the alpha. Everyone's watching us. I have every reason to be tense." "Let them watch." His hand pressed more firmly against her back, drawing her closer until barely any space remained between their bodies. "I don't care what they think." The song continued and Lily found herself relaxing into his embrace, her body moving with his as if they'd danced together a thousand times before. She could smell his cologne, something expensive and masculine that made her wolf purr with approval. Being this close to him felt right in a way she couldn't explain. "Why did you ask me to dance?" she found the courage to ask. Damien was quiet for a moment, his silver eyes searching her face. "Because I've watched you for months, working so hard at the clinic, always taking care of everyone else. You never ask for anything. You never demand attention. And tonight, you looked so sad standing alone by that table. I wanted to make you smile." Lily's heart skipped a beat. "You've watched me?" "More than I should have," he admitted quietly. "There's something about you, Lily Chen. Something that calls to me." The song ended but neither of them moved apart. The air between them felt charged, electric. Lily knew she should step back, thank him for the dance, and return to her invisible life. But she couldn't make herself move. "I should go," she finally whispered, though she didn't mean it. "Stay." Damien's hand came up to cup her cheek, his thumb brushing across her skin with surprising gentleness. "Have another drink with me. Talk to me." And so she did. They moved to a quieter corner of the ballroom, away from the curious stares. Damien brought her another glass of champagne and they talked about everything and nothing. He asked about her work at the clinic, about her childhood in the orphanage, about her dreams for the future. He actually listened, his full attention on her in a way no one had ever given her before. Lily found herself opening up, the champagne and his undivided attention loosening her tongue. She told him about growing up alone, about working multiple jobs to put herself through nursing school, about the satisfaction she felt when she helped heal someone. Damien watched her with those intense silver eyes, and for the first time in her life, Lily felt truly seen. The hours passed like minutes. The ballroom began to empty as pack members headed home, but Lily and Damien remained in their corner, lost in conversation. At some point, his hand had found hers on the table, their fingers intertwined. The touch sent electricity through her entire body. "Come upstairs with me," Damien said suddenly, his voice low and rough. "I have a private lounge on the top floor. We can talk more comfortably there." Lily knew what he was really asking. She wasn't naive. But the champagne and the way he looked at her made her feel reckless and desired and alive for the first time in her careful, quiet life. "Yes," she breathed. The elevator ride to the penthouse felt endless. They stood close, tension crackling between them. Damien's hand rested on her lower back, his touch burning through the fabric of her dress. When the doors finally opened, he led her into the most beautiful apartment she'd ever seen. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the mountains, the moon hanging heavy and full in the night sky. The space was decorated in blacks and grays, modern and cold but undeniably elegant. It suited Damien perfectly. "Would you like another drink?" he asked, moving toward the bar. "I've had enough champagne," Lily said softly. Her head was already spinning, though she wasn't sure if it was from the alcohol or from being alone with him. Damien turned to face her, his silver eyes dark with desire. "Then what would you like, Lily?" The way he said her name made something low in her belly tighten with need. Her wolf was howling, urging her toward him. This was crazy. This was wrong. But she couldn't bring herself to care. "You," she whispered. "I want you." Damien crossed the distance between them in two long strides. His hands cupped her face and then his lips were on hers, kissing her with a hunger that stole her breath. Lily melted into him, her hands gripping his suit jacket as she kissed him back with equal passion. They stumbled toward the bedroom, shedding clothes along the way. Damien's hands were everywhere, touching her reverently as if she were something precious. He laid her down on his massive bed and looked at her with wonder. "You're so beautiful," he murmured, kissing down her neck. That night, Lily gave herself to him completely. Damien was gentle and passionate, whispering her name like a prayer as they moved together. For those few perfect hours, she wasn't invisible. She was his entire world. Afterwards, they lay tangled in the silk sheets, Lily's head resting on Damien's chest as his fingers traced lazy patterns on her bare shoulder, lingering on her crescent moon birthmark. "Stay with me tonight," he murmured into her hair. "Don't go." "Okay," Lily whispered, her eyes already drifting closed. She felt safe and warm and cherished in his arms. She fell asleep believing that maybe, just maybe, fairy tales could come true. But when she woke the next morning, harsh reality came crashing down, and Lily learned that some fairy tales turned into nightmares
