Snow was falling gracefully to the ground, covering the last bit of visible grass with white, fluffy powder. Winter break had gone by too fast. Again. I felt the hot pain of embarrassment creep it's way up my neck and to my cheeks. Elliot had smiled at me! I took a quick glance around to make sure there wasn't another person nearby that he was actually smiling to instead of me. All clear! He smiled at me! My heart pounded while I hurried up the stairs and into the warm school. Our high school had more then two thousand students so the hallways were already buzzing with students, discussing their awesome stories over winter break. All I could do was work over winter break. "Rainey!" I heard someone call out my name and when I turned to look, Mr. Anderson was rushing over towards me with a girl right on his heels. The girl wore tight black pants, a plain gray hoodie and snow boots. Her red hair was perfectly straight and even though she was only wearing mascara she was absolutely gorgeous. "Hi Mr. Anderson," I greeted awkwardly and smiled at the girl, she gave me a shy smile back. "Would you do me the great favor of showing Ms. Green around the school today?" He cleared his throat and motioned for the girl to step forward. "This is Halle Green, she just transferred here from out of state so I want you to make her feel right at home here," Before I gave Mr. Anderson a for sure answer he was already rushing off, probably to go yell at some freshman students. "Hi, I'm Rainey," I held out my hand and we shook hands briefly. Her hands were cold as ice. "Halle, it's nice to meet you," We turned and began walking towards the seniors hallway. "So what school did you transfer from?" I suck at small talk. "Just some small school from a couple states over," She replied quickly. Obviously she didn't like small talk all that much either. "Well this is the senior hallway, all of your classes will be down here," I explained while we kept moving, ignoring the stares from classmates while we passed by. Halle didn't seem to be bothered by all the attention, she kept a straight face the entire time. "Did you get a locker code from the office?" She held out a small post-it note that had the locker number 845 and her combination below it. "Hey your locker is right near mine," I mumbled, trying not to sound excited because I know Halle wasn't excited about anything. At least she didn't look excited. "Oh that's good," She was quiet and didn't seem interested in anything I had to say anymore so I kept quiet while we pushed through students to get to her new locker. "Oh, 'scuse me," I heard the deep and familiar voice of Eli, Elliot's twin brother, right before his hand was on the middle of my lower back and lightly pushing me aside. I stared up at him in aw, not even caring he just pushed me out of the way. The only physical difference between Elliot and Eli were their eyes. Elliot had bright green eyes while Eli had dark brown, almost black eyes. "Sorry," I whispered and for a second out eyes met, his dark eyes burning into mine. He was so dark and cold, there almost seemed to be no life behind his eyes at all. As quick as it happened, it was over and Halle and I were just about to her locker. "Do you know that guy?" Halle blurted, nodding her head towards Eli who had stopped to glance back at us. "Not really, his name is Eli," I explained while she tried to open up her locker. "He's super cute," She mumbled and a cute blush crept onto her cheeks now. "I mean, at my old school we didn't really have cute guys," We both giggled quietly, not wanting others to hear what we were talking about. "You should see his brother then," "Oh, is he even better?" "In my opinion," There was no hiding my obvious feelings for Elliot. Ever since the 3rd grade I had been trying to get his attention and ever since 3rd grade I have failed miserably. "Are you two an item then?" Halle's question threw me off. "Uh, no . . . we aren't even really friends," I admitted, rocking back and forth on my heels and toes. "What? Why not!" Halle seemed extremely interested in my crush on Elliot and for once it was nice to have someone to talk to about it. Mom and dad never wanted to hear anything about school anyway. "He's way out of my league," "I seriously doubt that," Halle rolled her eyes, hey locker successfully popping open for her to throw her things into. "I think you should talk to him," "What? You don't even know him," I explained, wanting to tell her exactly how intimidating those eyes and that smile can be. Especially when he looks and smiles at all the girls the same way. . . "With an ass like yours, you can get any guy you want," I felt a surge of confidence as Halle complimented my backside but deep down I still knew there was no chance for Elliot and I to ever even cross paths.
