10# The Space Between Us

Emily thought distance would make things clearer. Instead, it only made the ache worse. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Jack’s smile, heard his laugh, remembered the way he looked at her like she was the only person in the world. She told herself she was doing the right thing. That stepping back would protect her from getting hurt. But then why did it feel like she was breaking her own heart? Days passed. Then a week. Jack didn’t text again. And she didn’t reach out either. Until one evening, when her phone finally buzzed with his name. Jack: I’m in town. Can we talk? Her heart pounded. She stared at the message for a long time, her fingers hovering over the keyboard. Part of her wanted to ignore it. But a bigger part—the part that still ached for him—knew she couldn’t. Emily: Where? --- They met at a small, quiet restaurant, away from the flashing cameras and screaming fans. When Emily arrived, Jack was already there, sitting in a corner booth, a baseball cap pulled low over his eyes. He looked up the second she walked in, and for a moment, neither of them said anything. Then Jack sighed, leaning back in his chair. “You really weren’t going to call me, were you?” Emily swallowed hard. “I didn’t know what to say.” Jack shook his head, running a hand through his hair. “You didn’t have to say anything. Just… talk to me. Let me in.” She looked down, guilt pressing heavy on her chest. “Jack, this isn’t easy for me. Your life, your world—it’s so different from mine. And I don’t know if I can handle it.” Jack exhaled sharply. “So you’re giving up?” Her eyes snapped to his. “I never said that.” “Then what are you saying?” he pressed, his voice raw. “That this—us—is too much for you?” Emily felt the sting of his words. “I don’t know. I just know that every time I see a picture of you and Lena, every time I read a comment about how I don’t belong in your life, it gets harder.” Jack’s jaw tightened. “Lena means nothing to me. You know that.” “But the world doesn’t,” Emily said softly. “And they never will.” For a long time, Jack didn’t speak. Then he leaned forward, his voice lower now. “Do you love me?” Emily’s breath caught. She knew the answer. She’d known it for weeks. “Yes,” she whispered. Jack nodded slowly. “Then don’t walk away. I don’t care about the media. I don’t care about the fans who don’t approve. I care about you. And if you’re willing to fight for this, then so am I.” Emily’s heart pounded. “And if I can’t?” Jack’s eyes darkened with something she couldn’t quite name—hurt, maybe. Or fear. “Then tell me now. Because I can’t keep chasing you if you’re already halfway out the door.” Tears burned in her eyes. She didn’t want to leave. She didn’t want to lose him. But was love really enough? Emily took a shaky breath. “I don’t have all the answers, Jack. But I don’t want to lose you either.” Jack reached for her hand across the table, his fingers threading through hers. “Then don’t. Stay. We’ll figure this out together.” Emily stared at their joined hands, the warmth of his touch grounding her. Maybe love wasn’t easy. Maybe it wasn’t simple. But maybe—just maybe—it was worth fighting for. ---
