Emily had always thought love should be simple. That if two people cared about each other, everything would naturally fall into place. But being with Jack wasn’t simple—it was chaotic, unpredictable, and terrifying.
Yet, as she sat across from him in the dimly lit restaurant, her fingers wrapped in his, she realized something: She didn’t want simple. She wanted him.
Jack gave her hand a gentle squeeze. “Say something,” he murmured.
Emily inhaled deeply, pushing past her doubts. “I don’t know how to do this, Jack. But I want to try.”
Relief flashed in his eyes, and a slow smile spread across his face. “That’s all I need.”
For the first time in weeks, Emily felt like she could breathe.

They spent the rest of the night walking through the quiet streets of the city, away from flashing cameras and screaming fans. Jack had his hoodie pulled up, his hand securely laced with Emily’s, as if he was afraid to let go.
“You know,” Jack said, glancing at her, “I had this whole dramatic speech planned in case you said no.”
Emily laughed. “Really?”
“Oh yeah.” He grinned. “It involved a lot of heartfelt declarations, maybe even a little begging.”
“I would’ve liked to see that.”
Jack smirked. “Well, guess you’ll have to settle for me just being relieved that you’re still here.”
Emily’s heart swelled. She wanted to believe this could work. That the world wouldn’t tear them apart.
But just as she was about to say something, Jack’s phone buzzed. He checked it and let out a frustrated sigh.
“What is it?” Emily asked.
He hesitated before showing her the screen. It was a news headline.
“Jack Steele’s Secret Romance? Mystery Girl Spotted Leaving Singer’s Hotel Room.”
Her stomach dropped. Beneath the headline was a blurry photo of her stepping out of Jack’s hotel a few days ago.
Emily’s pulse quickened. “This is already happening, isn’t it?”
Jack shoved his phone into his pocket. “I don’t care what they say. I won’t let them ruin this.”
Emily wanted to believe him. But deep down, she knew this was just the beginning.
The world was watching now.
And they wouldn’t stop until they knew everything.
