Prologue
Ava: “It should’ve been me.” I said it out loud even though no one was listening. Not my parents who wouldn’t hear me out, they had forgotten that just like they had lost a daughter, I had lost a sister. And certainly not the man I was going to marry in a week. Not that he’d care. Just like everyone else he looked at me like he wished it had been me. It was raining heavily the night Ivy died. We were late. She had a fitting for her wedding dress, and I was supposed to pick her up, but I lost track of time at the office. She called me five times before I finally rushed out the door. When I got there, she was standing under a street lamp, hair soaked, her brown eyes were already red from annoyance. Her dress was in a garment bag slung over her shoulder, dragging on the wet ground. “You said thirty minutes, Ava,” she said, clearly annoyed. “I know. I’m sorry. My boss—” “Just quit giving excuses when you are wrong. Simply admit you failed to come get me on time. You promised and failed to keep it. Again, Ava..” “I’m really sorry. And well, I’m here now.” “Yeah, after keeping me under the rain for more than an hour.” I said nothing, because she was actually right. I was the reckless one. My parents’ disappointment. The twin who never quite figured life out. The twin who was piecing her life together with gums instead of a stronger mould. Ivy was always the golden one, she was graceful, ambitious and had everything working out at just twenty-four. She’d been engaged to Dante Rossi, the heir to one of the most powerful corporate empires in the country, and our father had treated it like he was the one being married off to royalty. He always wanted one of his daughters to marry into the Rossi family. He just never specified which one. Until Ivy came home one night with an engagement ring on her finger. She was going to get married to Dante who was in love with her. My father was so happy, and arrangements for the wedding were made in two months. And in a blink of an eye, my twin sister was getting married in a week. But Ivy died that night. And I lived.
