What Happened Before
Lidya Michael has spent her entire life believing she was simply a girl who had been left behind.
Abandoned as a baby at St. Michael's Church in Ethiopia, she grows up in a children's home knowing almost nothing about where she came from. No parents. No relatives. No family photographs. No answers.
She learns to live with the emptiness.
Years later, after earning a degree in Journalism at Addis Ababa University, Lidya moves to Canada on a scholarship arranged through an anonymous donor. She builds a quiet life for herself in Toronto, works hard, loves stories and dreams of becoming a successful journalist.
Then one night, a message arrives from an unfamiliar number.
I know what happened to your mother.
She dismisses it as a mistake.
The next message makes that impossible.
Your mother left you for a reason.
Lidya begins asking questions she has spent her entire life avoiding. But the person contacting her never gives a name. The messages are rare, the numbers change, and whenever she tries to call, the connection disappears.
Whoever is behind them knows something about her past.
And, strangely, seems determined to protect her.
As Lidya searches for answers, memories from her childhood begin to look different. The story she was told about being found at St. Michael's. The little traditional medicine she wore around her neck as a baby. The few things she carried with her from the children's home. Even a childhood encounter with a visiting writer whose stories would eventually become some of her favourites.
She doesn't know that the writer was never just a stranger.
She doesn't know that the man she has admired for years has been watching her life from a distance.
And she certainly doesn't know that the person most desperate to keep her safe is the one person who can never openly claim her.
Because Lidya's birth is tied to a history of love, betrayal, violence and revenge that began before she was born.
A man was murdered.
A wedding never happened.
A young woman disappeared from the life she had planned.
And a child was left behind.
Now the people connected to that past are searching for Lidya.
Some want answers.
Some want revenge.
And some believe finding her will finally give them a way to settle an old score.
But they don't know where she is.
Only one man does.
Yilikal has spent years protecting his daughter without allowing her to know who he is. Every warning, every unexplained intervention and every carefully chosen moment of contact comes from a man fighting between two impossible choices: reveal himself and risk putting Lidya in greater danger, or remain a stranger and watch his daughter live without ever knowing her father.
Then Lidya meets Henon.
Henon Gebrehiwot is wealthy, powerful and accustomed to attention, but he has little interest in romance. Women constantly try to get close to him, and he has become skilled at keeping them at a distance.
Lidya is different.
Their first meeting is tense, unexpected and far from romantic.
Neither of them understands the strange pull between them, and neither is prepared for how complicated their lives will become once their paths continue to cross.
As Lidya and Henon slowly grow closer, jealousy, family loyalties and old enemies begin closing in around them.
Lidya thought she was searching for the people who abandoned her.
Instead, she is about to uncover a story that reaches far beyond her own childhood.
A story about a mother who made an impossible choice.
A father who has spent years loving his daughter from the shadows.
A family that never stopped searching.
And a truth that could put Lidya's life in danger.
Because sometimes the past doesn't disappear when you leave it behind.
Sometimes it waits.
And when Lidya finally discovers who she really is, she will have to decide whether the truth is worth everything it could cost her.
She was told she had no past.
She was never told how many people were determined to keep it buried.
