The Summons
Xaviera Isabella was the youngest daughter of the late James Hallington, one of the highest-ranking officials and most respected military commanders in the Kingdom of Exora. From the moment she was born, Xaviera had never known what it meant to go without. She grew up surrounded by the wealth and privilege of the Hallington family an esteemed household whose name was respected throughout nearly every corner of Exora. Wealth, status, the finest education, and a beauty that made her the center of attention wherever she went—Xaviera had been blessed with them all. It was as though fate had prepared a perfect life for her long before she was born. But that perfection shattered when Xaviera was three years old. James Hallington fell during the great war against Emola, a kingdom that had sought to conquer Exora and seize its territories. That day marked Xaviera’s first encounter with loss. Her father, the man who should have been her protector, the pillar upon which she could rely—was gone before she was old enough to remember what it felt like to be held in his arms. And yet, despite his death, life still seemed to favor Xaviera. Fifteen years passed. At eighteen, Xaviera had grown into a young woman who seemed almost flawless. Her beauty was renowned among the nobles of Exora. Her name was often whispered at royal gatherings, while sons of noble families competed for even the slightest chance to capture her attention. Until one afternoon, something happened that she could never have imagined. A dark-colored vintage car came to a stop in the courtyard of the old Hallington residence. At the time, Xaviera was sitting in the garden with her beloved cat. Not far from her, Nola, her mother was speaking with Emily, Xaviera’s sister-in-law. The afternoon had been perfectly ordinary. Until a man in a formal royal uniform stepped out of the car. Xaviera watched him from a distance. The royal insignia pinned to his chest made her brows draw together. A royal messenger? What could possibly bring him here? The man approached Nola and spoke to her briefly. Whatever he said caused her mother’s expression to change at once. “Xaviera.” Nola’s voice carried across the garden. “Come inside for a moment.” Xaviera rose and followed her mother into the house. The royal messenger walked behind them. Before Xaviera could ask what was happening, Nola stood before her, her expression unusually serious. “His Majesty King Ixora has summoned you to the palace. You are to go now.” Xaviera fell silent. “What do you mean, Mother?” “Isn’t it clear?” Nola held her daughter’s gaze. “Get ready, Xaviera. His Majesty King Ixora wishes to see you. Now.” Her mother’s voice was firmer than usual. Xaviera had never seen her look so serious. For reasons she could not explain, the warmth of the afternoon suddenly seemed to disappear. “A-All right. Give me a moment.” Without asking any further questions, Xaviera hurried to her room. She changed into a gown suitable for appearing before the King, fixed her hair, then stood silently before the mirror for a few moments. The reflection of an eighteen-year-old girl stared back at her. Yet something felt wrong. Her heart was beating faster, though she could not understand why. As though something immense was waiting for her beyond the palace gates. ⸻ That afternoon, Xaviera departed with the King’s messenger. Throughout the journey, she remained mostly silent, her gaze fixed on the crowded streets of Exora beyond the car window. It had been years since she had last visited the palace. After her father’s death, the Hallington family had gradually withdrawn from royal life. “Miss Xaviera.” The man behind the wheel broke the silence. “Yes?” “Are you not curious as to why His Majesty summoned you?” Xaviera paused. Of course she was curious. But she did not wish to question a royal messenger too freely. More than that, she feared her words might be considered improper. “His Majesty intends to fulfill his promise.” Xaviera turned toward him. “Promise?” The man gave a small nod. “His promise to protect you for the rest of your life.” Xaviera frowned. “What do you mean?” There was no answer. The man simply returned his attention to the road ahead, as though what he had just said required no explanation at all. Xaviera, meanwhile, sank deeper into confusion. ⸻ Not long afterward, the car entered the palace grounds. The enormous iron gates towering before them slowly opened. Eight guards stationed on either side bowed in unison as Xaviera’s car passed between them. She watched through the window, puzzled. Something was strange. Even when she had visited the palace with her father years ago, the royal guards had never bowed so deeply to her. The car finally came to a stop in the palace’s main courtyard. Two tall, broad-shouldered men were already waiting at the foot of the stairs. One of them immediately stepped forward to open the door for Xaviera before bowing respectfully. “Welcome, Miss Xaviera.” Xaviera stepped out slowly. She understood less and less with every passing moment. This level of respect seemed far too excessive for someone like her. “Miss Xaviera, His Majesty is waiting for you. Please follow me.” One guard led the way. Two others followed several steps behind Xaviera, one on either side of her. Her fingers unconsciously tightened around the fabric of her gown. The deeper she walked into the palace, the louder her heartbeat became. Until finally, they stopped before a pair of enormous doors. One of the guards knocked. Several seconds passed before the doors slowly swung open. At the far end of the room stood King Ixora, waiting for her. The King smiled the moment he saw Xaviera. “Come here.” The guards remained at the doorway. From this point on, Xaviera had to walk alone. A long red carpet stretched before her, leading directly toward the King. Every step felt heavy. Nervousness, fear, and curiosity tangled together inside her. When only a few steps remained between them, Xaviera bowed. “Your Majesty.” “Sit.” Xaviera obeyed and took a seat on one of the large sofas. King Ixora sat across from her. Several seconds passed in silence. “Xaviera,” the King began. “Do you know why I asked you to come here?” “Forgive me, Your Majesty…” Xaviera lowered her head. “I do not.” A faint smile appeared on King Ixora’s face. “You know, of course, that your father and I were very close.” Xaviera gave a small nod. “I owe him my life.” The King’s gaze grew distant, as though his mind had wandered back to a time long gone. “What are the title, throne, and crown I possess worth compared to what your father once did for me? James was never merely my subordinate.” He paused. “He was my brother.” Xaviera remained silent. “Fifteen years ago, when Emola attacked Exora, we faced the greatest war this kingdom had ever known.” King Ixora’s voice gradually grew heavier. “Fifteen thousand soldiers stood under my command. Yet for the first time in my life, I was afraid.” Xaviera lifted her gaze. “I saw the strength of Emola’s army and thought that even if Exora won, I might lose most of my men. I even considered surrendering before the battle began. I thought of giving our territory to Emola so that my people would not have to die.” A bitter smile touched the King’s lips. “But your father refused.” Xaviera stared at him without blinking. “James stood before fifteen thousand soldiers and told them that Exora was not built by men who chose surrender when the enemy stood at its gates.” Xaviera’s breath caught. “Your father led the army from the front. He broke through Emola’s defenses and led our forces straight through their lines.” King Ixora paused. “But in the midst of the battle, I came face-to-face with Emola’s commander.” His expression hardened. “I lost.” Xaviera froze. “The tip of his spear was only inches from my body. Another second, and Exora might have lost its King that day.” He fell silent for a moment. “But your father saw me.” King Ixora’s voice grew quieter. “James ran back into the battle. He pulled me away just before the spear struck, then drew his sword against Emola’s commander.” Xaviera clasped her hands tightly together. “He saved me.” The King lowered his gaze. “With his own life.” The room suddenly felt unbearably silent. “When Emola’s forces finally retreated, I carried your father back to our camp. His clothes were soaked in blood. I summoned every healer and physician we had.” King Ixora exhaled slowly. “Not one of them could save him.” Xaviera felt her eyes begin to burn. All her life, she had known only that her father had died in battle. No one had ever told her how it had happened. “The greatest commander Exora had ever known died before my eyes.” King Ixora looked at Xaviera. “And before he took his final breath, James held my hand and said something I have never forgotten.” Xaviera held her breath. “Take care of my family.” The King paused. “Take care of Xaviera for me.” Something stirred deep within her. A faint memory from fifteen years ago suddenly flashed through her mind. She had been only three years old when thousands of people dressed in black filled the grounds of the Hallington residence. She had not understood what was happening. All she remembered was her mother crying uncontrollably. A coffin. Thousands of grieving faces. And from that day forward, her father never came home. “I made him a promise,” King Ixora continued. “I would protect his family. Especially you.” Xaviera looked at the King. “And today, I intend to fulfill that promise.” She said nothing. “I will make certain that you are protected and provided for until the end of your life.” Xaviera’s heart began to pound even faster. For reasons she could not explain, she knew that whatever he said next would change her life forever. King Ixora looked directly into her eyes. “Marry my son.” Xaviera went still. “Xavero Rajendra.” For several seconds, Xaviera forgot how to breathe. “My descendants and I will protect you,” King Ixora continued. “And the only way I can ensure that my promise to your father lives on even after my death is to make you part of this family.” Xaviera remained speechless. “You will become my daughter-in-law.” A faint smile appeared on the King’s lips. “The wife of my son, Prince Xavero Rajendra.” “Forgive me, Your Majesty…” Xaviera immediately lowered her head. “I do not mean to reject Your Majesty’s will. But Prince Rajendra deserves a woman who is his equal. I…” She drew a nervous breath. “I am not worthy of standing beside the Crown Prince.” Silence filled the room. Then King Ixora leaned back calmly. “Not worthy?” Xaviera lowered her head even further. “You are the daughter of James Hallington. The blood of a family that has served Exora for generations runs through your veins. You are educated, born into a family of scholars, well-versed in royal etiquette, and blessed with a beauty spoken of throughout the nobility.” The King never took his eyes off her. “So tell me, what part of you makes you believe you are unworthy of standing beside my son?” Xaviera could not answer. King Ixora rose to his feet. This time, however, the warmth had vanished from his voice. “I did not summon you here to ask for your consent, Xaviera.” Slowly, Xaviera raised her head. King Ixora’s gaze had hardened. “I summoned you here to inform you.” Xaviera’s body stiffened. “Your marriage to Xavero Rajendra will take place.” “But, Your Majesty—” “There will be no refusal.” King Ixora’s voice echoed throughout the room. Xaviera fell silent. The King studied her for several moments before finally speaking the words that made Xaviera realize that from the moment she had stepped into the palace that afternoon, her fate was no longer entirely her own. “This is not a request, Xaviera.” King Ixora stood tall before her. “This is the King’s command.”
