Prologue
Life is just like coffee.
It gives us the drive to love, to dream, and to keep going even when everything feels uncertain.
But just like that first sip of a strong brew, it can also make us nervous. It gets our hearts racing, sometimes a little too fast, making us question if we’ve taken in too much. Yet most of the time, it gives us the right amount of jolt we need to move, to act, and to face another day in a world full of uncertainties and what-ifs.
In Cup & Joy, I've come to cherish and observe the regulars who buys coffee from my shop. But Chase is quite different. Every day, at three o'clock in the afternoon, he would enter my coffee shop, his hair slightly messy and his grin ready with some really ridiculous joke.
Sometimes, I think the caffeine hits him even before he takes a sip. He's full of energy, and it’s not the jittery kind. It’s light, natural, and infectious.
In a world that is full of rush orders and students running after their deadlines, Chase feels like a splash of cold latte on a hot summer day. He is unexpected, refreshing, and just a little bit sweet. His childlike personality has this strange ability to make the air feel lighter, even during the most stressful hours of the day. I find myself anticipating that moment he walks through the door, wondering what chaos or conversation he’ll bring with him.
I would never have thought that coffee would bring us close.
We are never alike.
Hell, we are not even on the same level. He's the top student in law school, destined for greatness, while I'm just a small business owner who never even finished my bachelor's degree.
It's funny how life works like coffee. It has a way of affecting us all differently, yet somehow, it brings us together and that's what I love about it.
The rich, the poor, the successful, the struggling... We all find comfort in the same cup.
We had bonded over coffee so deeply that he became a fixture in my life, as essential to my daily routine as grinding beans or steaming milk. It's nice and somehow comforting to have someone who not only understands my passion for coffee and cakes but shares it with the same enthusiasm. That's something undeniably special about our friendship.
It has a warmth that lingers beyond the steam of a freshly brewed cup. It's familiar and effortless, like a warm mug that fits perfectly in your hand, offering peace with every sip.
I'm grateful for it. He brightens everyone's mood even in the most stressful hours of my shop.
Sometimes, I’ll catch him looking at me. Not in a loud or dramatic way, but softly, like he sees something no one else bothers to
notice. And sometimes...
Just sometimes.
I wonder...
But no.
It’s just Chase.
That’s simply how he is. His kindness, his warmth, it radiates effortlessly. He’s built with a heart too big to contain, and he shares it with everyone. I’m lucky to be one of those people, even if only in this small, steady way.
And honestly, I’m content with that. Because just like coffee, not all things need to be rushed or labeled.
Some things are simply meant to be felt. Warm, comforting, and exactly what you need.
