Chapter one
Naomi Hampton woke up feeling pain all over her body. The sheets beneath her were rough and unfamiliar, and the room was filled with the faint smell of alcohol and sweat. Every slight movement sent waves of agony through her sore muscles, including some she didn't realize she had. The dim light barely illuminated the strong build of the man beside her, but she knew instantly it wasn’t James. "James?" she whispered, her heart pounding in her chest like a wild drumbeat. Her voice was a hoarse rasp, her mouth dry as if she had swallowed sand. James Kingston had been her boyfriend for four years, but something about this situation didn’t feel right. She turned her head, squinting to see who was next to her. Her breath caught in her throat when she realized he was a stranger. He had a strong build, his features chiseled and undeniably attractive, but he was not James. Panic surged through her veins. How had this happened? The last thing she remembered was going to a pub with James and her best friend, Mia, to celebrate her job promotion. They had drunk and danced a lot. After that, her memory was a blur. Naomi carefully moved away from the stranger, her heart racing. She wished desperately that it was James lying next to her, but the reality was far more sinister. She quietly put on her clothes and slipped out of the room, her breath coming in shallow gasps. It was still dark outside, the early hours before dawn. She caught a taxi and gave her address, her mind racing with fear and confusion. When she reached her apartment, she quickly paid the driver and rushed inside. She looked around their two-bedroom apartment but couldn't find Mia anywhere. Her best friend since their time in a foster home, Mia was the only person she could think to turn to. Naomi tried calling Mia, but the call went straight to voicemail. Desperate to wash away the filth she felt clinging to her skin, she hurriedly took off her clothes and stepped into the shower. The hot water scalded her, but she scrubbed her skin raw, trying to erase the memory of the stranger’s touch. She spent almost an hour in the shower, but the feeling of violation wouldn’t wash away. Just as she was drying off, she heard voices coming from the living room. Her heart sank when she recognized James’s voice. "Mia, what did you do? Where is Naomi?" James sounded worried, his voice carrying through the thin walls. Naomi felt a wave of shame and guilt, but the next words froze her in place. "Relax, babe. You wanted to make it look like she betrayed you and push her out of your life. That’s what I did. I put something in her drink and took her to a room where a man was already waiting," Mia said, her voice filled with a cold satisfaction. Naomi's blood turned to ice. She pressed her ear to the bathroom door, listening in horror. "Drunk, she would have given away her virginity to anyone. Isn’t that the reason we’re here? To catch her in the act of spending the night with someone other than you?" Mia’s voice was full of spite. Naomi couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Her best friend from one of her foster homes had orchestrated this? And James, the man who had pursued her relentlessly for two years, had agreed to it? The betrayal from the two people she trusted the most was like a knife twisting in her heart. "I did want her out of the way, yes. But not in this way. The only reason I agreed to your plan is because you’re carrying my baby. I can't let my family’s reputation be ruined if this comes out. I can’t marry you if Naomi is still around. But you had to embarrass her in the most terrible way. She’ll be broken when she finds out she lost her virginity to a stranger. If she learns I'm marrying you instead, it will hurt her deeply," James said, sounding torn. Naomi felt sick. James had always been conscious of his family’s reputation. His uncle, Damian Kingston, would never forgive him for a scandal. But this? This was beyond anything she could have imagined. She thought back to the countless nights she had spent studying and working hard while Mia partied and envied her success. Naomi had always been the overachiever, landing a better job, improving her grades, and catching the eye of James Kingston. "Kevin, remember, I'm pregnant with your baby. You should be concerned about me and our child, not Naomi," Mia said sharply. Kevin? Naomi’s mind raced. Kevin was James’s real name, but he rarely used it. Hearing Mia use it now, with such familiarity and possessiveness, made Naomi’s stomach churn. Mia and Naomi had met in a foster home. Naomi was clever, pretty, kind, and truthful, and people liked her more than Mia. Naomi was good at everything, making Mia feel less important. Naomi improved her grades, landed a better job, and even caught the attention of James Kingston. Mia decided she wanted James for herself because he came from a powerful and rich family. Marrying him would mean a life of wealth and not having to work. James felt guilty. He knew he was doing wrong, but he would always prioritize his reputation over Naomi's. "Okay, call her. Let's finish this. I was going to introduce Naomi as my fiancée today, but I'll introduce you instead. Reporters will be at the Kingston estate at ten," he said, sounding annoyed. Mia took out her phone and called Naomi. To their surprise, they heard a phone ringing from inside Naomi's room. They looked at each other, shocked. Naomi wasn't expected to return yet. Mia rushed to open Naomi's door and found her standing there. "Naomi?" Mia said softly, surprised. 'I locked her in that room myself. How did she return so quickly? She doesn't seem hurt. Did she overhear our talk?' Mia felt panicked. James turned very pale. Naomi felt pain, but she didn't show it. She didn't want the two mean people to see her upset. She made her face look strong and stared at James. She hadn't thought he would do this, but she should have guessed. Once a playboy, always a playboy. "I don't want to see you again. You can tell everyone she's your future wife. Leave," she said sharply. James wanted to explain and ask for her forgiveness, but he was too scared. Quickly, he turned and left. Then Naomi looked at Mia. James had been in her life for only a few years, but Mia had been her best friend for ten years. Naomi needed to know why Mia did this. "Why?" she asked in a cold voice. Mia didn't ask for forgiveness. Instead, she smiled a mean smile. "It's simple. I was jealous. You always got everything, and I was always trying to catch up. And James, he's like a special ticket to a better life. I wanted that for myself. So I took it from you," she admitted shamelessly. Naomi shook her head, feeling disgusted by Mia's real personality. She wished she had noticed it earlier. "I worked hard for everything I have. When you were out having fun with your friends, I was studying. But you never understood the effort behind my achievements. You only saw the results, not the hard work. If you had worked as hard as I did, you could have been in my place instead of serving food. This apartment is mine, and I pay all the bills. I'm going out. When I come back, I want you to be gone." After saying this, Naomi closed the door firmly in Mia's face. Naomi's heart ached, but she forced herself to stay strong. She wouldn’t let James and Mia's betrayal destroy her. She had worked too hard to let them take everything from her.
