The Rejection
The full moon hung high above Silvercrest territory, glowing like a silent witness over the sacred ceremonial grounds. Lanterns flickered between the towering pine trees, casting golden light across the clearing where hundreds of wolves had gathered. The scent of burning herbs filled the air as elders prepared the final rituals of the Moon Ceremony. It was the most sacred night of the year. The night when the Moon Goddess revealed fated mates. Excitement rippled through the pack as couples laughed and whispered, hopeful that fate would finally reveal their destined partners. But Ava Whitmore stood near the edge of the clearing, her heart racing for an entirely different reason. Her fingers trembled slightly at her sides as she struggled to steady her breathing. Everything had changed tonight. Everything. Her mind kept drifting back to what had happened only an hour earlier. The forest. The pull. The overwhelming heat of the mate bond. Ava closed her eyes briefly, her cheeks warming despite the cool night air. When the Moon Goddess revealed Adrian Blackwood as her mate, the connection between them had struck like lightning through her entire body. The bond had been so powerful it had stolen the air from her lungs. Adrian had felt it too. She had seen it in his eyes. For a moment, the ruthless Alpha of Silvercrest had looked just as shaken as she was. Then he had taken her hand. Without a word.Without asking for permission. He had led her away from the ceremony and into the forest. Ava’s heart thudded harder at the memory. Beneath the silver glow of the moon, the bond between them had burned so fiercely that neither of them had been able to resist it. And Adrian—Her breath caught. Adrian had not tried to resist. Instead, he had pulled her into his arms and kissed her like a starving man finally tasting water. Ava shook the memory away quickly, forcing her eyes open. Now was not the time to think about that. She swallowed nervously as her gaze searched the clearing. She still hadn’t seen Adrian since they returned. After everything that had happened between them… he had simply walked away. The thought made unease twist inside her stomach. Had she misunderstood everything? Before she could dwell on the thought any longer, a deep horn echoed across the clearing. The sound silenced the crowd almost instantly. All conversations faded as the elders stepped onto the stone platform at the center of the ceremonial grounds.
“The final stage of the Moon Ceremony will now begin,” the oldest elder announced, his voice carrying across the clearing. A hush fell over the gathered wolves. “This is the moment when the Moon Goddess’s chosen bonds will be recognized before the pack.” Excitement rippled through the crowd again. Couples who had discovered their mates earlier in the evening began stepping closer to the platform. Ava’s heart began pounding painfully inside her chest. This was it. The moment Adrian would acknowledge her. Her fingers curled nervously together. Across the clearing, movement caught her attention. Adrian Blackwood stepped forward. The Alpha of Silvercrest who commanded attention the moment he appeared. Tall, broad-shouldered, and radiating quiet authority, he looked every bit the powerful leader the entire territory respected—and feared. His dark ceremonial cloak hung loosely from his shoulders as the firelight illuminated his sharp features. But his expression was unreadable. Ava searched his face desperately, hoping for some sign of the man who had held her beneath the moonlight earlier that night. But Adrian didn’t even glance in her direction. Her chest tightened. Before the elder could continue the ceremony, a sharp feminine laugh suddenly cut through the silence.“Well… this is certainly unexpected.” The crowd turned. Victoria Hale stepped forward gracefully from the front of the gathering. She looked every bit the daughter of a powerful Alpha—elegant, confident, and dangerously beautiful. Her long dark hair fell over her shoulders as she walked toward the center of the clearing, her heels clicking softly against the stone. A cruel smile curved across her lips. Ava’s stomach dropped. Victoria stopped a few steps away from the platform, folding her arms casually as she surveyed the crowd.“I think the pack deserves to know something interesting that happened tonight,” she said smoothly. A murmur of curiosity spread among the wolves. The elder frowned slightly. “Lady Victoria, this is not the time—”“Oh, I believe it is,” Victoria interrupted sweetly. Her gaze slid directly toward Ava.“And I believe Ava Whitmore should be the one to explain it.” All eyes turned toward Ava. Confusion flashed through her.“What…? ” Victoria’s smile widened.“Tell me, Ava,” she said lightly. “Where were you earlier tonight?” Ava’s pulse spiked.“I—I was—”
“Oh, I can answer that for you,” Victoria said smoothly. She turned toward the crowd. “I saw our dear omega sneaking away into the forest with Alpha Adrian.”
Gasps rippled through the clearing. Whispers erupted instantly.
“What?” “With the Alpha?” “That omega?”
Heat flooded Ava’s face.“That’s not—” Victoria raised a delicate hand, silencing her.
“Shall I continue?” she asked mockingly. Her eyes gleamed with malicious satisfaction.“I watched them disappear into the trees together,” she continued loudly. “And they didn’t return for quite some time.” The murmurs grew louder. Suspicion spread like wildfire among the pack. Ava’s heart pounded painfully as she looked toward the platform.
Adrian stood there silently. Watching everything. Waiting. This was his moment. He would tell them the truth. That they were mates. That the Moon Goddess had chosen them. Ava took a shaky step forward.“Alpha Adrian—” Victoria’s voice sliced through the clearing again.“So,” she said coolly, turning toward Adrian, “perhaps the Alpha himself would like to explain why he spent the evening alone in the forest with an omega.” Silence fell across the clearing. Every wolf waited.
Adrian’s silver eyes slowly shifted toward Ava. For a brief moment, their gazes locked. Ava felt her breath catch. Say it. Please…Say it. Adrian stepped forward onto the center of the platform. His voice echoed across the clearing.“Yes,” he said calmly.“I did encounter Ava Whitmore earlier tonight.” A flicker of relief filled Ava’s chest. But Adrian’s expression remained cold. Emotionless.
“However,” he continued, his voice hardening, “there is nothing more to it than that.”
Ava froze. What…? Victoria tilted her head slightly, feigning curiosity.“Oh?” she said softly. “Then perhaps you should clarify something for the pack.” Her smile sharpened.
“Is Ava Whitmore your mate?” The question hung in the air like a blade. The entire clearing held its breath. Ava’s heart hammered against her ribs. Adrian’s gaze lingered on her for a long moment. Then his expression turned completely cold.
“No.” The word struck like thunder. Shock rippled through the crowd. Ava stared at him in disbelief.“But… the bond—” Adrian’s voice rose, strong and commanding. “The Moon Goddess must have made a mistake.” Pain twisted through Ava’s chest. Before she could speak again, Adrian delivered the final blow. “I, Adrian Blackwood, Alpha of Silvercrest,” he declared loudly, “formally reject Ava Whitmore as my mate.” The mate bond shattered. Agony exploded through Ava’s body as if her heart had been torn in two. A broken cry escaped her lips as her knees buckled beneath her. The pain was unbearable. Around her, the crowd erupted into whispers and cruel laughter.
“An omega Luna?” “How ridiculous!”
Ava collapsed onto the cold ground, tears blurring her vision. Above her, Adrian stood tall and unshaken on the platform. As if nothing had happened.
As if the moment they shared beneath the moon had meant nothing at all. And hidden deep within Ava’s body… A new life had already begun to grow. A secret that would one day change everything.
