Chapter 28 — Into the Dark
(Dual POV — Damian & Aria)
---
Damian’s POV
The entire warehouse plunged into pitch-black silence, broken only by the faint crackle of the comms and the distant hum of machinery somewhere deep inside.
I pulled my night-vision goggles down, scanning the room in shades of green. Shadows shifted. Every movement was a potential threat.
Victor’s voice slithered through the speakers again, smooth, mocking, and too calm for a man holding all the cards.
> “Did you really think I wouldn’t see you coming, Damian?”
I didn’t respond.
I raised a hand, signaling Lucas and the rest of Alpha team to hold position.
> “Oh, don’t be shy,” Victor continued, his tone darkly playful.
“I’ve been waiting for this night for years. You ruined me once. Now I get to return the favor.”
I clenched my jaw.
This wasn’t just about power.
This was personal.
---
Aria’s POV
I pressed my back against the damp wall, heart pounding so hard I thought it would give me away.
Somewhere beyond the corridor, chaos was unfolding — shouts, boots thudding, distant gunfire.
I didn’t know if it was Damian’s men or Victor’s.
I only knew one thing: I had to move.
I crept forward, clutching the guard’s pistol tightly. My fingers trembled, but my breathing stayed quiet.
The hall split into two passages — left led deeper into the darkness, right led toward faint light spilling from a broken doorframe.
I chose the light.
Step by step, I pushed the door open. Inside, a control room. Dozens of monitors flickered, showing every angle of the warehouse.
And then I froze.
On one of the screens, I saw him.
Damian.
Moving silently, his gun drawn, eyes sharp.
Relief washed over me — until I noticed another figure behind him, slowly raising a weapon.
---
Damian’s POV
A muffled click.
Instinct took over. I ducked, spinning, firing twice.
The guard behind me dropped before he could pull the trigger.
Lucas cursed under his breath behind me.
“They’re closing in fast. Five, maybe six more on the east side.”
“Let them come,” I said coldly, reloading my gun.
“I’m done hiding.”
---
Aria’s POV
I grabbed the nearest headset on the control panel and pressed the button, praying it worked.
“Damian,” I whispered urgently, my voice shaky but sharp.
“There’s another ambush coming from your right. Three men on the catwalk above you.”
Silence.
Then his voice, low and dangerous, came through my earpiece.
“Aria.”
The sound of my name on his lips sent a strange rush through me — relief, fear, something darker tangled in between.
“Where are you?” he demanded.
“I… I don’t know. Some control room. But Damian, Victor’s watching everything. You need to—”
The feed cut out.
The monitors went black.
And then Victor’s laughter echoed through the speakers, cold and cruel.
---
Damian’s POV
The sound of his laughter was like gasoline on fire.
“Lucas,” I snapped, my patience gone,
“we’re splitting up. You take Bravo team and sweep the west wing. I’ll handle the catwalk and find Aria.”
“You’re going alone?”
“Yes,” I said, loading a fresh magazine.
“If Victor wants me, he’ll get me.”
---
Aria’s POV
I backed away from the dead monitors, panic rising like a storm.
A sharp metallic click came from behind me.
I turned slowly.
Victor Hale leaned casually against the doorframe, a pistol hanging loosely from his hand, his eyes glinting like a predator’s.
“Well,” he said softly,
“looks like the damsel freed herself.”
I tightened my grip on the gun I’d stolen.
“Stay away from me.”
He chuckled, stepping closer, unbothered.
“Oh, sweetheart, you’re holding that thing like it’s going to save you.”
“Try me,” I spat.
Victor tilted his head, smile widening.
“You’ve been spending too much time with Damian. You even sound like him now.”
---
Damian’s POV
I heard the faint echo of voices as I neared the upper hallway.
Aria’s.
I froze, listening hard.
Victor was with her.
My muscles coiled, ready to strike, but every instinct screamed caution. If I rushed this, I could get her killed.
I slid along the wall, silent as a shadow, until I reached the open doorway.
Inside, Victor stood no more than five feet from her, his gun lowered, his tone mocking.
He hadn’t seen me yet.
But Aria had.
Her wide eyes locked with mine for a split second, and I raised a single finger to my lips — stay quiet.
---
Aria’s POV
I didn’t move.
I didn’t breathe.
My heart thundered against my ribs as Victor paced slowly toward me, his voice low, hypnotic.
“Do you know what Damian took from me?” he murmured.
“My empire. My men. My future.”
He stopped inches from me, leaning close, his cold breath brushing my skin.
“And now… he’s going to watch me take you.”
I steadied my grip on the pistol.
One wrong move, and this room would become a graveyard.
Then, in one perfect moment, Damian struck.
---
Damian’s POV
I fired once.
Victor’s gun flew from his hand, clattering to the floor.
Before he could recover, I had him pinned against the wall, forearm to his throat, gun pressed against his temple.
“Where. Is. The rest of your crew?” I growled.
Victor laughed, coughing blood, his teeth stained crimson.
“Everywhere,” he rasped.
And then his radio crackled to life.
“All units,” a voice barked,
“initiate Phase Two.”
---
Cliffhanger Ending
Suddenly, explosions ripped through the lower levels of the warehouse, shaking the ground beneath us.
Smoke. Alarms. Chaos.
Lucas’s voice screamed through my comms:
“Damian! They’ve rigged the entire place — we have to get out now!”
I turned to Aria. Her face was pale, her lips trembling, but her grip on the pistol was steady.
Victor smiled through the blood on his teeth.
“You’re out of time.”
And then the floor beneath us gave way.
