The Dangerous Client
Chapter 1 — The Dangerous Client (Dual POV) --- Aria’s POV Los Angeles. Midnight. The city glittered like a thousand secrets waiting to be told, but tonight my world was nothing but contracts, deadlines, and caffeine. I stared at the thick case file on my desk, every page screaming danger in bold letters: Defendant — Blackwood Enterprises. Owner — Damian Blackwood. Even his name felt sharp on my tongue. Billionaire. Untouchable. Rumored crime lord. And now… my client. I was supposed to be grateful. This case could make my career. But deep down, something told me I was walking straight into the lion’s den. A soft knock pulled me from my thoughts. “Miss Sullivan?” My assistant peeked in, pale and jittery. “Someone’s here to see you.” “At this hour?” I frowned. “Who—” And then I saw him. Damian Blackwood. Tall. Immaculate black suit. Dark, calculating eyes that made my chest tighten. He didn’t belong in this office — he belonged in whispered rumors, unsolved cases, and the nightmares of powerful men. “Miss Sullivan,” he said smoothly, stepping inside without waiting for permission. “We need to talk.” I stood, forcing my voice to stay steady. “Mr. Blackwood. I wasn’t expecting—” “I make it a habit never to be expected.” His tone was low, deliberate. Like a predator circling prey. --- Damian’s POV She was smaller than I expected. But fiery. Most people wilted under my gaze — lawyers, politicians, CEOs. But this woman? Aria Sullivan met my stare like she wanted to burn through me. That intrigued me. “You’re representing my company,” I said, letting my voice drop with authority. “Which means you work for me now.” Her lips parted in disbelief, then curved into something dangerously close to defiance. “With all due respect, Mr. Blackwood,” she said evenly, “I work for the law. Not for you.” I smiled. Slowly. The kind of smile that sent men running and women trembling. “In my world, Miss Sullivan…” I leaned in close — close enough to see the rapid flutter of her pulse. “…I am the law.” She stiffened but didn’t flinch. Interesting. I liked a challenge. --- Aria’s POV I swallowed hard, heat crawling up my neck, refusing to back down. “Then maybe,” I shot back, “your world needs a reality check.” His expression darkened — amusement twisting into something sharper… hungrier. Before he could reply, his phone buzzed. One glance — and his entire demeanor shifted. From composed and calculating to lethal. “Change of plans,” Damian said, sliding his phone into his pocket. “You’re coming with me.” I blinked. “Excuse me?!” “You want to win this case?” His voice was low. Dangerous. Magnetic. “Then you’ll do exactly as I say.” I stepped back. “I’m not going anywhere with you.” His eyes locked on mine, and the corner of his mouth curved in a slow, wicked smile. “You don’t have a choice, sweetheart.” And before I could react, Damian Blackwood turned and walked out of my office — leaving me trembling, furious… and terrified of how much I wanted to follow him. --- Cliffhanger Ending My phone buzzed a second later. Unknown Number: > “Leave the office now. He’s not who you think he is.” I froze, staring at the message. Before I could reply, the lights in my office flickered… and went completely dark. --- Chapter 2 — The Devil’s Invitation --- Aria’s POV The silence after the power outage felt heavier than the case file in front of me. One moment, the soft hum of fluorescent lights filled my office. The next, total darkness swallowed everything. I blinked into the void, the faint glow of the city skyline outside barely enough to outline the sharp edges of my desk. “Great,” I muttered. “Perfect timing.” I reached for my phone, using its dim light to guide me, when it buzzed again. A new message flashed across the screen: > Unknown Number: “Leave the office now. He’s not who you think he is.” My stomach dropped. I read it once. Twice. A third time — hoping I’d misread it. Leave the office now. Who was he? I didn’t need to guess. The file still open on my desk told me everything: Defendant — Blackwood Enterprises. Owner — Damian Blackwood. I’d only met him once, briefly. But his reputation preceded him. A ruthless billionaire. A man rumored to control half the city’s underground. A devil dressed in Armani. And now… he was my client. I took a shaky breath, instincts screaming at me to grab my bag and run. But before I could move, the air shifted. A presence behind me. Then — a low, smooth voice. “Thinking about leaving, Miss Sullivan?” I whipped around, phone clutched in my hand like a weapon — only to find him leaning against my office door. Damian Blackwood. Six feet of power wrapped in a perfectly tailored black suit. The glow from the city lights kissed his jawline, making the sharp angles of his face look carved from steel. He didn’t belong here. He belonged in rumors, headlines, whispered threats. Not standing in my darkened office with a gaze that pinned me in place like a butterfly under glass. “Mr. Blackwood,” I said, forcing calm into my voice. “What are you doing here?” He stepped inside without answering, his polished shoes silent against the carpet. “Checking on my lawyer,” he said finally, tone smooth… but edged with something unspoken. “And clearly, just in time.” My pulse skipped. “What’s that supposed to mean?” He nodded toward the phone still trembling in my hand. “The message.” I froze. “You—” I swallowed. “You sent that?” A small, cold smile curved his lips. “No. But whoever did wants you scared enough to walk away from this case.” My grip on the phone tightened. “Maybe I should.” “Maybe you shouldn’t,” he countered, stepping closer. I should’ve stepped back. I should’ve told him to leave. Instead, I stood rooted, breath caught somewhere between defiance and something I refused to name. --- Damian’s POV She was even more stubborn than I expected. Aria Sullivan wasn’t just beautiful — she radiated fire and steel beneath that polished professionalism. Most people avoided me. Most lawyers bent when I raised my voice. But her? She looked at me like I was a puzzle she intended to solve — or destroy. Dangerous. For both of us. “You should pack up,” I said evenly, hands in my pockets. “We’re leaving.” Her brows lifted in disbelief. “We?” “Yes.” My gaze didn’t waver. “This building’s compromised.” She crossed her arms, pretending she wasn’t trembling. “And you’re the authority on that?” “I’m the authority on a lot of things, Miss Sullivan,” I said softly, letting my voice dip into command. “Including danger.” For a second, I thought she’d argue. But then her eyes flicked past me — toward the glass wall behind. Her expression shifted. “Damian,” she whispered. “Don’t move.” I turned slightly, scanning the shadows beyond her office door. Movement. Fast. Silent. Wrong. Victor’s men. I’d been expecting this. But not tonight. Not this soon. --- Aria’s POV I didn’t understand what was happening — only that Damian’s entire posture changed. The composed, self-assured billionaire was gone. What stood in front of me now was something far more dangerous. His jaw tightened. His hand slipped into his jacket. “Stay behind me,” he said quietly. I hesitated. “Damian—” “Now, Aria.” There was something in his tone — cold, lethal, absolute — that stripped the fight right out of me. I stepped behind him just as the glass door creaked open. Three men in black moved into the office, faces shadowed, weapons drawn. My breath caught. My knees nearly buckled. The one in front — taller, broader, radiating menace — spoke first. “Blackwood,” he said flatly. “Step away from the girl.” Girl. As if I wasn’t standing right here. As if I wasn’t a person at all. Damian didn’t move. “You have five seconds,” the man warned, leveling his gun at Damian’s chest. “Put it down,” Damian said, voice low and steady. “Walk away, and you live.” I wanted to scream — Are you insane?! — but the words caught in my throat. Because the way he stood… The way he owned the room even against three armed men… He wasn’t bluffing. --- Damian’s POV Victor’s message was clear. This wasn’t a warning shot. It was a declaration of war. But they made one mistake tonight — They involved Aria. And that… I wouldn’t forgive. The leader jerked his chin at the others. “Grab her.” My hand moved before my mind caught up,
