I was sitting on the rooftop of a tall building, overlooking the bustling city below me. The night sky was clear, and the stars were twinkling like diamonds. It was peaceful up here, away from the noise and chaos of the city.
But my peace was soon interrupted by the sound of footsteps approaching me. I turned around to see two men standing behind me. One of them was tall, clean, and fast, while the other was rather chatty and bitter. I recognized them immediately. They were my grandfather's men, Darren and Marco.
"What are you doing here?" I asked them.
Darren spoke first. "We've come to take you home, Aurelius."
"Home?" I repeated, feeling confused.
"Yes," Marco said. "Your grandfather, Alpha Robert, has passed away."
I could feel my chest tightening and my throat choking up as the realization hit me like a ton of bricks. My grandfather, Alpha Robert, was dead. The man who had raised me and taught me everything I knew about being a person was gone, and I would never see him again. I felt like the ground had been pulled from beneath my feet, and I struggled to keep my emotions in check.
Darren and Marco looked at me with concern, their expressions reflecting the gravity of the situation. They had known me since I was a child, and they knew how much my grandfather meant to me.
I took a deep breath and tried to steady myself. "When did this happen?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
"Yesterday," Darren replied. "We received word this morning and came to find you as soon as we could."
I nodded, feeling numb. My mind was racing with thoughts of what was to come. My grandfather had been a beloved leader, and his passing would undoubtedly cause chaos in the pack.
Darren and Marco exchanged worried glances, and I knew they were thinking the same thing. "We need to get you home, Aurelius," Marco said, breaking the silence. "You can not run from it this time."
But then, Darren spoke again, and my confusion turned to worry. "Your uncle, Leon, might try to take the claim to be the alpha. We need you back home to prevent that from happening."
My uncle Leon was the son of Robert’s brother, and he was a ruthless man, always hungry for power. My grandfather has only one daughter, and that’s my mom. Monique Huntington. Oh I forgot. It is now Monique Silvester.
"What do I have to do with any of this? He can have whatever he wants."
"He asked for you," Marco said, with a hint of bitterness in his voice. "The grandson he has raised and loved, the runaway Lycan who broke his heart. The child he failed to protect. He want you to come home."
I felt a knot form in my stomach. If not my uncle, if I take the chance, I might just cost everything my grandfather had worked so hard to build.
“He wanted a rouge prince, a lustful and destructive grandson to be his heir? I don’t see the different between me and Leon, honestly.”
But I didn't want to go back. I had left home years ago, tired of the politics and power struggles that came with being a part of the pack. I had wanted to be my own person, free from the expectations of others.
"I don't know if I want it, Marco," I said, feeling uncertain.
Darren grab the collar of my shirt. "You’re no grandson of his. You’re weak and pathetic. I am glad he did not live to hear these words from your mouth, boy."
“Hey, that was too far.” said Marco. “The boy is his appointed a heir still, and if you have a mother who abandoned you at twelve and left you with the wolves, you would not have been as strong as you think.”
I listened intently as Marco revealed the shocking news about Leon and his involvement with The Golden Company. "Why would Leon hire a group of rogue wolves? My uncle might be a power hungry man, but the man himself does not lack power to do things those rogue could. " I asked, puzzled.
Marco replied, shaking his head in disgust. "The Golden Company will do anything for gold. They're ruthless and they don't care who they hurt. Leon does have the power, but he has dirty laundries he needs to get done, and he's willing to pay any price for it."
Darren spoke up: “He wants to swallow the territory to the north. The land with rich moonstones mines is what he wants. But first there is something he must do to to ensure that.
I frowned. "And now he's planning to wage war with the Castel pack? That's insane! They may be small in number, but they have the advantage of their territory. It would be a bloodbath."
"That's not all," Marco continued, his voice lowering. "Your aunt.”
“What’s about Charlotte? Has she been hurted?”
“She is not, but she’s not comfortable either. If your uncle wants to invade Castel, he would have to obtain a greater force than his own and the Golden Company combine.” Daren continued. “He needs to legitimize his claim to the Huntingtin pack, Aurelius. He needs something, or-”
“Someone.” I finish his sentence. I was terrified at the recognition I just gained.
Charlotte is a widow, and she's been like a mother to me. This is the woman who took me into her arms since my birth, who taught me that people that most people live and die where they were born, rarely ones who got to see the world. She took charges when I part my grandfather. Without her, I-
“If you would not take your claim, Leon will take her to wife, Auri.” Marco voice soften. "And I'm sure you know that your aunt isn't someone you just simply take to wife."
"My uncle would marry a corpse if Charlotte has her way. And Charlotte always has her way." I turned to them. "Guess you two didn't come here to give me a choice."
