First Day
Everly’s POV
My alarm rings. 7 AM, cool, I knew setting my alarm earlier was a good idea. I now have time to go on a run before I have to get ready for my first day. When I applied to go to Figwood College in the fall of my senior year, I was sure I wouldn’t get in. Don’t get me wrong, I had the smarts, but they didn’t just look at your intellect upon acceptance. I spent all senior year training, but I still just wasn’t as fast as all the other she-wolves. I wasn’t slow by any means, but I have this wild thirst for not drawing too much attention to myself. I strive to do things perfectly and timely, so that no one can have the opportunity to pull their little stunts they loved to in high school. Admittedly, I get it, with a name like Everly Green, you’re bound to warrant some teasing. I mean, c’mon.. thanks a lot, mom and dad. It also didn’t help at all that my wolf is white.
As I said, I preferred to be invisible, but that too they preyed on, cracking jokes at my frail figure. “Here quick, EverGreen, stand behind this pole! Oh no! Where’d she go!” But at Figwood, it was all going to be different, with that many people, how could I possibly be singled out? I’d have to avoid a few people, but easy peasy when your new home is set in a remote location in a forgotten forest only known to beasts. It’s the safest place for us wolves to freely obtain the needed information to succeed in our roles in our packs. Generations upon generations have attended Figwood, it was rare to find someone who hadn’t attended.
I pulled my stick straight long black hair into a ponytail, and found a bag to put my clothes in while I ran. I checked the time, 7:10, I had just enough time to do what I needed. I headed to the bathroom to brush my teeth before heading out the door to the woods. The air was crisp, but had a weird underlying humidity that immediately alerted my wolf it was going to rain. A shorter run today was fine, maybe with the extra time I could manage to do some light makeup. I reached the tree and undress, planning to run for only 20 minutes, my wolf didn’t seem to disagree. She too was excited for our first day, I turned 18 this summer which is the time most of us are called to our mates. Instead of joining all my friends on their nights out I chose to stay home and binge watch bad movies, so she was a little upset we hadn’t had a chance to meet our mate yet.
I head back to the tree to change back into my pajamas so I can do the little bit I need to do to get ready. All my bags are packed, so I just have to shower and put myself together a bit. Once I reach my house, I head to the bathroom. I undress and catch a glimpse of my unclad body in the mirror, since turning 18, my body had changed quite a bit. Where I once lacked any figure at all, I now had slight curves and a bit of plumpness in the areas my potential mate would be of interest. I quickly shower and head to my room to slip into the outfit I picked for my first day. With my sister Willow’s help, we put together a pretty solid wardrobe that fits my “style”, or however she put it. My outfit consisted of high waisted mom jeans, one of my dads old band tees, and one of my Nan’s infamous cardigans. I head to my vanity to do the “light makeup” look Willow taught me, as well as one of the cute hairstyles she showed me. I usually would opt for just throwing on a beanie, but I did want to look presentable.
Nora should be here any minute, so I grab my bags and head downstairs. With my parents being pack nurses, we’re pretty middle class, so I don’t have my own car. Nora’s dad Alpha Jameson’s Beta, so they’re a more well off than us, making Nora our personal taxi. I see Nora pulling up and barely make it to her car before she’s screaming, “GUESS WHAT I JUST FOUND OUT?”. Throwing my bags in the back, I reply, “I have no idea, tell me.”, before hopping in the front seat. “Prince Arlo is attending Figwood this year, he has a few classes to take before he can take his place as the rightful heir of the Lycan kingdom!” When I tell you my jar hit the floor, a Lycan Prince?! I knew Lycan’s attended Figwood, but what were the odds it’d be this year! “Yeah I guess he’s set to take the thrown next summer, and has a few classes with us as well, also don’t forget, our first shift at the cafe is today.” says, Nora. “Yeah I know, I still don’t get why you chose to work with me, your housing is already paid for.” I say, looking down to pull skin from my cuticle. Nora grabs my arm and gives it a squeeze before she replies in typical Nora fashion, “We stick together, always. Plus it’s a good way to meet new people… mates even.”
Yeah, meeting our mates in a coffee shop that sells little treats, what a love story.
