I left him outside for five full minutes. Then I took a large black umbrella from the stand, crossed the lobby, and walked over the wet gravel to the entrance. Julian scrambled up and grabbed my lab-coat sleeve. His fingers were cold enough that I felt them through the fabric. “Evelyn.” “She lied to me. Chloe was sick and never told me. She played me, Evelyn. I was a fool, but she used me. She destroyed everything.” He blamed Chloe, then the doctors, then the hospital for missing what he had refused to look for. He never apologized for exposing me or bringing Chloe into our home. My name came up only when he needed something. “Please. The KR-antibody, our project. You’re the only one who can finish it. You have to save me.” His fingers tightened on my sleeve. I pulled my sleeve free.
