For seven years, my research kept my husband Julian’s healthcare empire alive while he took the credit. At the company anniversary banquet, he gave my seat at the head table to his new assistant, Chloe. Then a card slipped out of her designer bag: Bridgeport Infectious Disease Center. I knew the clinic. I also knew Julian had brought home something worse than an affair.

Chapter 1 The Celebration Dinner
Julian stood under the ballroom lights in a tailored suit, thanking everyone who had helped Harper Medical reach the seventh anniversary of its market debut. I watched from a table in the corner while cameras flashed around him. Most of what he was celebrating had begun in my lab, from the first failed cultures to the final trial data. He thanked the board, the investors, and his “tireless team.” My name never left his lips. “And a special thanks,” he added, his smile flashing for the cameras, “to my new assistant, Chloe Jenkins. Her fresh perspective has been a true asset.” The room applauded. Chloe gave a small wave from my seat at the head table, directly beside Julian. My place card was nowhere in sight. Seven years of my research had become a speech that never mentioned me. His mother, Margaret, leaned toward me. “See, Evelyn? A little charm goes a long way. She’s so much more vibrant than some boring bookworm.” I left my napkin on the table and walked out. My wrap was in the private lounge, and the ballroom air conditioning had left my arms cold. I opened the lounge door without knocking and stopped. Julian had Chloe pressed against the mahogany bar, his hands tangled in her blonde hair. Her dress was rumpled, and his tie hung crooked. They broke apart when the door moved. Julian looked irritated, as though I had interrupted a meeting. “Evelyn.” He straightened his tie. “You could have knocked.” Chloe smoothed her dress and smiled at me. Then her perfume reached me. It was my custom blend, made at a small perfumery in France after months of adjustments. The perfumer had recorded it under my name, and there was no second bottle. Julian must have taken mine from the bedroom. I turned for the ladies’ restroom before either of them could say more. I was splashing cold water on my face when Chloe came in. She ignored me, set her open designer bag on the marble counter, and began reapplying the lipstick Julian had smeared. As she rummaged inside, a small, stiff card slipped from a side pocket and fluttered to the floor. She didn’t notice me pick it up. I picked it up by one corner. The card was thick, with a patient number stamped beneath the embossed name: *Bridgeport Infectious Disease Center.* My hand went cold around the card. Bridgeport handled cases that ordinary clinics referred out, including serious infections people tried very hard to hide. A healthy young assistant had no routine reason to carry its patient card. Months of unease snapped into focus. I set the card back beside her bag and left to find out exactly what Julian had brought into our home.
