The following weekend, Sarah was up early on Saturday morning. She walked into the bathroom and took a quick shower before getting dressed. She would need to be at the competition by 8:00 am so two hours before it was supposed to start. Pulling out her phone after getting dressed, she texted both her parents, her brother, Jade, and Andrew as a reminder of the competition that day. She quickly headed out the door and went to the address she was given. It was actually the local high school’s gymnasium that they had temporarily converted to work for the competition.
Once she was there, she stepped out of her car with her bag with the outfits she was planning on wearing for each dance. Although as soon as she got out of her car, she was pressed up against the closed door by very familiar hands. “Hey Andrew.” She said before even looking up at him.
“Hey Sarah.” He said before leaning down to kiss her lips. She kissed him back and wrapped her free arm, that wasn’t carrying her bag, around his neck as the kiss deepened. She definitely was not expecting the kiss to be like this, although after their talk last weekend, she would have been more shocked if there wasn’t a kiss.
“I wasn’t expecting you for another couple hours.” She whispered as they broke from the kiss.
Andrew just laughed soft before shaking his head. “I know you said 10, but I just had to see you beforehand.” He said before resting his forehead against hers. All he wanted to do was tell her who he truly was and that’s why he wouldn’t be able to make it until the end. Or he would have to go into the building later in order to see if she wins.
“That’s really sweet. Honestly, I was hoping I would see you before it started. But I do need to get in there and check in. Otherwise, I won’t even be able to compete.” She said before pulling away. She kissed his cheek gently before walking into the side door. He watched as she left, not being able to pull away.
Sarah got checked in and headed to the locker rooms of the high school since that was where they would be changing. This was certainly not Sarah’s first dance competition, but it was her first one where she could win an actual prize. She would be able to pay for an entire year of college if she won the prize money today.
She got dressed into the first outfit which was an elegant light blue, floor length dress that had gems along the neckline. The first dance each contestant had to do was a ballroom dance of their choosing, the second was a ballet, and the third was a discipline of the contestant’s choosing and Sarah had chosen a hip-hop style dance.
Thankfully, there were less than 20 contestants who were able to make it, which meant they would actually be able to get out of there on time. She had been worried about leaving at 5:00 tonight because she had a class to teach at 6:00. Her brother had already agreed to cover her class if the competition had run longer than expected, but she was now confident that they would get out on time, if not beforehand. There were no breaks between performances longer than a couple minutes so it would continue on quickly.
She wasn’t on until over halfway through, but her partner was already done getting ready, so he helped finish off her makeup. He grew up as a theater kid so he could apply makeup better than the majority of men. Tristan kissed her cheek before helping her up off the chair.
Once their names were called, they walked out hand in hand before doing their suggestive tango for both the judges and the audience. Halfway through their dance, she looked out into the audience and saw Andrew in the audience. She could tell he was a little jealous by the look he was giving Tristan. When she made eye contact with him, she gave him a wink and bit her lower lip before continuing the dance with Tristan.
They finished the dance a minute later and bowed for the audience and judges before going backstage. She went into the women’s locker room and got dressed into a black leotard with black tights and pink ballet shoes. While she was changing, she received a message from Andrew, A little suggestive, don’t you think?
She just laughed and showed the text message to one of her friends. They just laughed and Sarah sent a message back, Yeah, I’m sure his boyfriend was jealous too.
She watched from backstage as the other competitors did their ballet performances. She was worried about how her performances would compare to the rest of them. These were the best of the best in the entire state so she wasn’t sure about how she could beat the rest of them. She told her friends that she would be back in a few minutes.
She walked out the side door and wrapped her arms around herself from the chill of the air. It was a windy summer day, so it wasn’t too bad, but it was still a little chilly outside. She suddenly felt arms around her, and she looked back to see Andrew. “How did you know I was out here?”
“I didn’t, but I guess we both needed some fresh air.” He said, although knew it was for different reasons.
She turned around and buried her head into his chest. “I’m scared, Andrew.” She whispered while he rubbed her back.
