THE AWAKENING
Elena Voss had always sensed that she was different, but she had spent years pushing those feelings deep down into the quiet corners of her mind. At twenty-four years old, her days were filled with the comforting routine of working as a librarian in the small, misty town of Ravenwood. The old library, with its creaking wooden floors and shelves heavy with forgotten stories, was her sanctuary. Yet, even among the thousands of books, she felt an inexplicable pull toward certain ancient volumes that seemed to hum with hidden life when no one was watching. That night, as a fierce storm raged outside her inherited cottage on the edge of the Blackwood Forest, everything changed. Rain hammered against the roof like impatient fingers demanding entry. Elena sat curled up on her worn sofa, a mug of cooling chamomile tea in her hands, trying to lose herself in a novel. But the words blurred as a strange flicker appeared in the corner of her vision — a shadow that moved independently of the firelight dancing in the hearth. She turned sharply, her heart skipping a beat. Nothing. Just the empty room and the howl of the wind. "You're imagining things again," she muttered to herself, rubbing her tired eyes. Her grandmother, the woman who had raised her after her parents' mysterious disappearance, had always spoken of "veils" and "gifted blood." Elena had dismissed it as the ramblings of an old woman who loved her folklore too much. Now, alone in the storm, those stories felt uncomfortably close. A soft, childlike whisper brushed against her ear, clear as a bell despite the thunder: "Help us... the darkness comes." Elena jumped to her feet, knocking over a stack of books. There, materializing near the fireplace, was the translucent figure of a young boy dressed in clothes from another century. His wide eyes were filled with desperation, and his small hand reached out toward her, passing straight through the armchair beside him. A wave of icy air swept through the room, making her skin prickle. "You're not real," Elena whispered, backing away until she hit the bookshelf. But deep down, she knew better. Flashes of her childhood returned — the way shadows seemed to follow her in the playground, how injured animals would calm instantly in her presence, and that terrifying moment in college when an invisible force had pushed her out of the way of a falling scaffolding beam just in time. The boy’s voice echoed again, faint but urgent. "You are the key. The veil is tearing. They need you." Before she could form a reply, lightning flashed, and the apparition dissolved into swirling mist that faded into the walls. Elena sank to the floor, her breath coming in short gasps. Her hands trembled as she reached for the old leather-bound journal she had discovered in the attic weeks ago while sorting through her grandmother’s belongings. The pages were filled with elegant, spidery handwriting detailing bloodlines of guardians, rituals to maintain the balance between worlds, and warnings about a group called the Shadow Coven.
