The Story of My Becoming is a raw, emotional, and deeply human memoir that journeys through the fragile corridors of childhood, faith, pain, and survival. It is the voice of a girl who grew up learning strength before she ever understood happiness, and faith before she fully understood life.Born into an average family—neither poor nor wealthy—the author’s childhood was shaped by strict discipline, religious devotion, and emotional restraint. Her world was small and tightly controlled, limited to school, church, and home. While other children formed friendships and explored freely, she learned early what it meant to live quietly, obediently, and alone. Love existed, but it was often overshadowed by silence, comparison, and unmet emotional needs. When her older siblings were sent to boarding school, she was left behind with her younger brother, carrying loneliness far heavier than her years could bear. At only eight years old, she learned to endure isolation, favoritism, and constant correction, finding comfort only in her father’s gentle reassurance. Despite doing well academically and striving to please, she was often overlooked, misunderstood, and burdened with responsibility beyond her age.Her childhood took a harsher turn when she was sent to hawk liquid soap in the market to provide for her school needs—an experience that exposed her to hunger, shame, and emotional neglect. Yet even in these moments, resilience quietly took root. Against discouragement and mockery, she contested and won a school beauty competition, a small but powerful victory that reminded her she was more than the labels placed upon her.As the family moved through different rural communities due to her father’s ministerial postings, life became increasingly uncertain. A violent incident in their church shook the entire community, introducing fear, trauma, and loss into an already fragile existence. This marked a turning point—one that deepened her understanding of the world’s cruelty and the fragile nature of safety.Transitioning into boarding school brought new battles. Hunger, harsh punishments, bullying, and isolation became daily realities. Amid it all, her health began to fail. What started as stomach pain evolved into unexplained collapses that earned her cruel nicknames and suspicion. Accused of faking illness, labeled with spiritual myths, and feared by peers, she suffered quietly while clinging to her academics and her faith.Despite recurring sickness that robbed her of opportunities and public recognition, she refused to surrender her dreams. She excelled intellectually, stood firmly for justice, and held onto the belief that her life had meaning beyond her suffering. Her father’s unwavering prayers and encouragement became her anchor when everything else seemed to fall apart. The story reaches a haunting depth as she recounts terrifying encounters within her boarding school—moments that blur the line between fear, spirituality, and the unseen. These experiences.

THE STORY OF MY BECOMING
MY LITTLE BEGINING Growing up is not always is easy right? Yes it's not. This the story of my life I was born of a wealth average family Yes we are not poor but we are not rich We feed well also I lack nothing Growing up in a family that loves discipline and holiness it was tough for I and my sister, our parents are very strict and never let us see the outside world. Our destination ends in school, church and home no friends,no where to go to No hanging out with family members nor friends Oh yes we loved and cherished those moments as a kid. Growing up,my elder sister was enrolled in a boarding school same with my elder brother and I was left at home with my younger brother who is also our last. I felt left out and so lonely that I won't speak to anyone for days or week if possible, all I do is go to school with my younger brother and come back. My mom was a teacher who taught in the same school I attend but in the secondary section but I hardly communicate with her we talk only at home. My mom never stop praising my lazy younger brother and scold me of every little thing I do. I tried improving but it gets worse, my dad will always console me and ask me to stop crying but once he leaves the house any slight mistake I will be scolded. I was 8 then and in primary 5 when all these was happening, I endured praying for my siblings to come back but the days keep on moving slowly, all I have was my dad. Yes I love my younger brother with all my heart and never blame him in anything or let him cry,I take his blames both in school I never let anyone touch him. On a holiday, my siblings came Oh wow! It was our happy moment, all the family was complete no one was left behind. As they all arrived my mom scolded me to leave the house to the market where I was before I got the information of there arrival. I nearly cried but I held myself then I was already 9 and in primary six. Guess what I was doing in the market? Hawking Yes I was hawking liquid soap And any sales I made is what I will use for my resumption note book. I Never paid school fees in the school because I was under scholarship My school organised a beauty competition which I contested and won the most beautiful of them all. Before I went for that competition my siblings discouraged me, "Oh yes,you the ugliest in this house, So why then are you going for a beauty contest, Who encouraged you?" I broke down in tears at any of these statements but never get discouraged I pushed hard and never gave up. On the day of the contest I did come prepared nor with any cloth when we where called up I was confused and knew not what to do I took my sister clothes exchanged with her after a long plea, and I went up for the contest and Grace found me I won it. Oh yes I won and I always take first in class too that boosted my mind Back to where I was, I was at the market till my dad saw me and shouted out at my name "GRACE!! What are you doing there?" I rushed back home before my dad could get to the house,I followed the backyard bush part which was the closest to our house. Getting home they have already finished all the meals prepared oh I couldn't cry nor laugh I was too weak for that. My dad got home and yelled at me, my little brother came to my rescue, "Daddy, she was sent by mummy oh, she was in the market before Gift and Victor came back, after she welcomed them mummy said she should go back and food has finish oh" My dad was so angry that yelled at my mom so hard. Oh yes, That marked the end of my hawking life in that land. I was settled; I ate and slept I don't know how to cook well but as a young growing girl I learnt how to cook basic food which I can use to take care of myself if am found to be alone at home. My elder sister assisted in cooking throughout the holiday but I wasn't easy at all. I was mocked by them, Beaten by them because am the weakest among them all I never complained about anything The only thing I kept on talking about was my health which was serious deploying I was going down seriously But after my complaint they didn't do anything My dad was low on cash to take me for a medical test He will always carry me and console me "It's fine my love; It's just normal stomach pain,ok?" I will shout ok sir.
