Hugo’s POV
I didn’t move, I couldn’t. Her scent surrounding me, faintly. My instincts telling me she was in danger.
I moved, finding where her scent was coming from. Rain mixed with something foul. Something that screamed danger.
My jaw clenched.
Rogue.
I needed to find her. Every step felt sharper, every sound felt distant as I could only focus on her. My Iris.
I was overthinking this, why the hell was her scent mixed with something as foul as a rogue, stopping in my tracks I find her as her scent engulfs me completely.
A twig snaps from underneath my feet, causing her to turn in my direction, too fast, too sharp.
Why the hell was she out this far from the pack house while there was rogues around, ready to attack.
“Iris” I breathed out, noticing how I wasn’t out of breath after running this far out. I could feel my body changing. My senses.
“What are you doing out here?” I asked, my voice low.
Her eyes flickered, darting around. I caught it before she kept her eyes on me.
“I - I needed some air” she said, quickly. I looked around, as I got closer to her.
A faint c***k wasn’t lost on me, I stilled, my eyes darting around the trees trying to see anything. Could have been a deer.
Iris, hadn’t moved a muscle. Her eyes darting around as well. Something inside me was screaming to not believe her. What did my mate know that I didn’t? She wouldn’t lie to me, would she?
“Really?” My eyes roaming her body, looking for any signs she was hurt.
“This far out? With rogues around?” I asked, my gaze never leaving her.
She hesitated, if I wasn’t looking at her I would have missed the hesitation. It was almost unnoticeable. Quick.
“I didn’t think they would come this close” she said, looking down at her feet, wrapping her arms around herself. My eyes watching her intently.
“Iris” I said again, slowly this time. Her name sounding different from my lips.
“What’s going on?”
Her lips parted, slightly and then closed again. The words at the top of her tongue.
“I told you” she whispered, her head shaking just slightly “I just needed space”. A lie, I don’t know how I knew but something inside me was telling me, something I hadn’t felt before.
I heard a branch snap again, further in the forest. My head snapping to the direction. Every instinct was alert, screaming at me. This was danger.
My gaze going between the forest and her, she wasn’t surprised, she was scared. Scared of whoever was in that forest, waiting.
“Iris” I said, the softness gone from my voice, my eyes hardened on her now.
“Who is there?”
“Hugo” my name sounding wrong on her lips.
“I’m - I’m sorry” she says between broken sobs.
“What did you do?” I whispered, I didn’t want this to be real.
She tried to touch me as I took a step back “what did you do?!” My voice cracked this time, louder causing her to flinch back.
“I didn’t - I was trying to-“
A low, menacing growl cut through the forest. A rogue moving slowly, ready to attack. I pushed Iris behind me, she was still my mate. I still had a duty to protect.
I was ready to take this rogue, I would end its miserable life. My chest felt like it was caving in, not just from the anger but the betrayal of my mate.
My body began to move on its own before I could think properly, he lunged at the same time. I was faster, I grabbed him by the fur on his neck and slammed him down to the dirt.
I managed to get my arms around his neck as he thrashed more trying to knock me off him, but to no luck.
His breathing slowing down as my arms tightened around his neck, a snarl tore from his chest. Or mine, I wasn’t sure anymore.
All I felt was the rage. To protect my family and pack.
One sharp twist, a deaf sickening c***k echoed through the forest. Followed by the silence. The restraint from the rogue was gone as he lay lifeless in my arms.
I got up and turned to look at Iris. She was frozen, her gaze watching the whole thing happen.
Watching me, she was scared.
Of me.
And a part of me, was scared of me too. Even as a human I shouldn’t have been able to kill so easily against a wolf.
