Chapter 2: The Party

1030 Words
Anna At 6:50 pm, I look at the mirror and gasp seeing myself in the green sexy open-back long dress with a trumpet skirt that accentuates my full figure perfectly. I accessorize it with matching Swarovski crystal danglers and Christian Louboutin’s gorgeous black capsule stilettos. I must say my husband spent a fortune on these items for just a night. It must be a very important party. The bell rings at exactly 7 and I rush to the door. I open and see my husband talking on the phone outside, so I close the door behind me and wait for him to finish. After cutting the call, he scrunches his brows and insinuates, “Were you eavesdropping?” My jaw drops hearing his implication, “No, why would I?” Samuel gives me a once-over and exhales breath with a twisted face, “Sit, before I change my mind to take you to the party.” I nod and walk towards the car where the chauffeur was already waiting for us. The chauffeur opens the door for me and I sit inside the black Bentley, which Samuel recently purchased. He, too, joins me in the back seat and stipulates the driver to start. He does not look at me even once in the car and continues to type something on his phone screen. I look outside the window and see the stars shining brightly tonight. I remember when I was in school, I loved to see the moon and count the stars. This was my way of taking my mind off of the study pressure. I was a brilliant student and wanted to be a businesswoman. But, the person sitting next to me changed everything and made my life a living hell. However, tonight I do not wish to delve into my past. Within 15 minutes, we reach the destination. I see the most luxurious hotel in the area, known to serve its customers with the best the city has to offer. It did not look like a hotel but an Italian Palace. The driver stops the car in front of the entrance and Samuel opens his car door and walks towards my side to help me out of the car. Again something I never experienced before. We enter together and I gape at the magnificent interior. The marble handcrafted tiles on the floor, million-dollar chandeliers, crystal staircase, and a fountain in the middle all speak of extravagance. I was still lost appreciating the beauty when Samuel comes near my ear and warns, “This is my boss’s party, so behave yourself and don’t embarrass me.” I turn my eyes towards Samuel and nod timidly. He leaves me standing in the big hall and I suddenly feel out of place. I gulp the extra saliva forming in my mouth and walk shyly towards a corner where no one can see me. I grab a rotating chair and see Samuel talking to a bunch of people, all dressed in customized suits. Then I roam my gaze on the other people engaged in conversation some of whom were smiling, laughing, and gossiping. During this perusal, I sense a presence standing next to me, someone I know but when I turn my head, I see a young waiter, probably my age, with a tray in his hand, “Mam, would you like to have something?” He asks politely. I see the varied color drinks, most of which I had never tasted before, in his tray, and out of curiosity I ask with a smile, “Which is your favorite?” He smiles back and replies, “Mam, I like the orange drink.” I smile again at the coincidence, as my favorite drink is also orange. I pick it from the tray and mutter a sweet “Thank you.” He leaves and goes to the other side, as I enjoy my drink. While I sip my orange drink, I see Samuel walk in my direction. With his every step towards me, I feel tremors in my hands and fingers. My first mental response is to run away, but I know better there is no escape. I stay glued to my seat and when he approaches me, my mouth falls open to see him play my lovely husband’s role perfectly. “Darling, I want you to meet someone special.” He announces in his made-up innocent voice. Before I could utter a word, he grabs me by my arm and starts towards a group of VIPs deeply engaged in some kind of business deal. I cannot comprehend why I am here and why my husband wants to introduce me to his business partners. But, I go with the flow. I need to know what is going on in my husband’s mind. As we reach, he speaks respectfully but slowly to a man wearing Zoot’s limited edition suit worth $45000. I instantly know he is the man my husband wants me to meet, but why? From the back, the man exudes power and dominance, but his face is not visible to me. His aura is different from the rest of the crowd and I am eager to get a glimpse of his look. My husband grips my hand and pulls me near him while saying, “Sir, I would like you to meet my lovely wife, Anna.” The next moment two grey eyes turn to look at me and I feel the earth tremble and with it, my legs crumble beneath me. I fall backward but Samuel holds me and asks, “Are you alright, honey?” I pass him a fake smile and nod. When I glance at the face in front of my eyes, I cannot believe he has turned more handsome than before. His chiseled face with a straight nose and thin lips was staring back at me with an unsaid emotion, which I feel is vengeance. He does not say anything and I feel at a loss for words. I exhale a heavy breath and extend my hand for a handshake, “Hello! I am Anna.” He acts as if he doesn’t know me and shakes my hand firmly, “Nice to meet you, Mrs. Jones. I am Ethan, Ethan Walton.”
