Rain fell most of the time Frank and Nordhuff were away. Gregory woke well before sunrise the next day, unable to sleep well by himself in the big bed. He prepared a quick breakfast for himself and Sally. The rain let up to a slight mist, so he decided to go ahead with his plan to check on Sarah Nordhuff. He knew it would take nearly half the morning to travel to her place in normal conditions. It was still dark when he left. All he could do was head in the direction of her place and hope that by the time of sunup, he could see where he was going. That hope diminished with each step. As the sun rose, mist and fog enveloped him and Sally in its shroud. Sally ran ahead once, lost sight of Gregory, and then stayed glued to his heels when he came back into view.
