Chapter 7 Gregory held the boy close and listened to what was going on. He smelled the musky scent of wild animals on the hunt. In the moonlight, his eyes adjusted to see what was going on beyond the sturdy walls of the cabin. Between the cracks in the logs, he saw them. Huge wolves—nearly twice what he’d ever seen in Iowa or any of his travels while in the Army—circled the cabin. Acting like rabid dogs, they searched for an opening in the strange pile of trees they had discovered in their territory. Gregory heard them digging and growling, trying to breach the cabin from beneath the foundation. They pawed frantically under the door. Sally whimpered and barked.
