Chapter 1 – The Spark
The rain had been falling for hours, turning the city streets into rivers of shimmering neon. Lena Ward pulled her coat tighter around her, weaving through the midnight crowd. She was used to late assignments — chasing dead leads and half-truths for Urban Pulse, a local online magazine — but this one was different. The message had arrived in her inbox only three hours ago: “If you want the truth, go to Obsidian Veil tonight. Midnight. Ask for Dorian.” No signature. No explanation. Just an address in the city’s oldest district. She almost laughed when she first read it — it sounded like the start of a bad crime novel. And yet, here she was, standing in front of a building that looked nothing like the rest of the neighborhood. Its facade was dark marble, the kind that drank in light instead of reflecting it. Two tall men in tailored black suits guarded the door, their expressions unreadable. As Lena approached, one of them looked at her with eyes so pale they almost glowed. “Name?” he asked, his voice low and smooth. “Lena Ward,” she said, trying to sound casual. The man didn’t check a list. Instead, he simply nodded, stepped aside, and opened the door. The moment she stepped in, the sound hit her — a deep, pulsing rhythm that seemed to bypass her ears and go straight to her chest. The air was thick with something she couldn’t quite place — not smoke, not perfume, but a mix that made her skin tingle. The club was unlike anything she’d seen. Velvet drapes in black and crimson hung from the ceiling. Shadows clung to the corners, while the dance floor glowed in a slow, hypnotic light. People moved there in ways that weren’t just dancing — it was slower, more deliberate, almost ritualistic. She scanned the room, looking for someone who might be Dorian. Then she saw him. He was leaning against the bar, talking to a woman with hair the color of firelight. Tall, dressed in a black suit that fit like it was sewn on his body, he turned his head slightly — and his gaze locked with hers. It was a strange kind of eye contact — not accidental, not polite. It felt like a hook sinking into her chest. He excused himself from the red-haired woman and began walking toward her. Each step seemed perfectly measured, like he was crossing not just a room, but a boundary. “Miss Ward,” he said when he reached her. His voice was low, warm, but there was an edge beneath it. “You’ve been expected.” She blinked. “Expected? You sent that email?” He smiled — a slow, knowing smile that made her pulse jump. “No,” he said, “but whoever did… they knew exactly where to send you.” The music shifted, darker now, more primal. He gestured toward the back of the club. “Come. There’s something you should see.” Every rational part of her screamed to leave, but her feet moved anyway. And as she followed him through a velvet curtain into the club’s hidden corridor, she couldn’t shake the feeling that she’d just stepped into a place she might never come back from.
