It's Saturday night now and my pack mates and I are prepping to go into the warehouse where the fight night will be taking place. We're in the surveillance van right now getting our gear on and going over everything the cameras have caught over the last two days. We were able to catch some of the set-up on camera but everyone who showed up looked like grunt workers. Even today, if the boss has already shown up, he probably came in with one of the larger crowds, so we weren't able to identify him. The goal for tonight is to ID whoever is running this fight club so we can start gathering some information. Our informant doesn't even know who he is, but this seems like a big event, so I'm sure he'll make an appearance.
"Alright, everyone geared up and ready to go?" Kayden asks from where he's finishing putting on his spy camera at the front of the van.
"Yes sir!" I say with a mock salute. "It's just us three going in, and then the tech team is gonna stay here to watch the cameras, right?" I double-check. Probably for the tenth time. I don't understand any of this spying tech stuff, I would much rather solve problems the old-fashioned way with my fists, but I get why this stuff can be necessary sometimes. I actually used to be a fighter on the underground circuit in my teenage years, so it's a little weird being back on the scene. It's got my hackles up, and I'll probably be radiating aggression by the end of the night. Lucky for me, my best friends and I formed this pack as soon as we turned eighteen, and it helps with the aggression and rage. An omega would probably fix what my friends can't, but our lives are too chaotic and dangerous to bring an omega into the mix.
"Yeah, we're all set here. All your cams are working, if you guys can just check your mics real quick." Jensen says from behind me. He's one of our agency's tech guys and will be manning the surveillance van while we're gone.
"Check, check." We all say into our mics. He finally gives us the go ahead to move in, so we leave the van and start walking the two blocks to the warehouse.
"How are you feeling, Leon? It must feel weird to be back in this scene," Kayden asks, always in tune with how we're feeling.
"Ya know, it's weird. Part of me wants to sign up to jump in the ring, and the other part of me thinks things like this are stupid. Let's just get what we came here for and get out of here. I don't want the aggression that'll be in there riling my alpha too much." I move at a brisk pace towards the warehouse, but Kayden and Zack are able to keep up with me.
"We've got cameras covering every entrance, and even some inside of the building. We should be able to catch something, but on the off chance we don't, we might want to consider finding someone on the inside who is willing to talk to us. Keep an eye on the fighters and the crowd for someone whose interests might align with ours and, if we need to, we can make contact later," Zack says from right behind me, always the practical one of us.
"10-4 man. Hey, it looks like there's a line to get in." We're coming up on the warehouse now and in the time it took us to walk here from the van, a line has formed that goes down an entire side of the building. We join the back of the line and listen to the conversation of the people in front of us. It looks like a couple and the girl seems even more excited than her boyfriend.
"I can't believe she's coming back! Belladonna was incredible before she retired! Think about it, a female beta who didn't lose once! Her last fight was brutal, though I didn't actually get to see it. My friend told me about it though, she took on six alphas at once and once she won, she announced her retirement! I wonder how they got her to come back for this tournament! I can't wait to see her in action again!" She squeals, pulling on her boyfriend's arm as the line moves forward.
Well now we know why this event seems even bigger than we expected. An old fighter coming out of retirement for a tournament is practically unheard of on the underground circuit. Usually, someone only retires when they take a serious injury that leaves them unable to continue fighting. And did she say a female beta? Yeah, I don't think I believe a word of what this girl is saying. I look at Zack and Kayden, and they seem as disbelieving as I am. The line is moving pretty fast, but we're not hearing anything new as more people join the line. Everyone is just talking about this Belladonna chick.
Finally, we're about to be let in when my nose is assaulted by the smell of burning lemons. A small body pushes me to the side as she passes and walks right through the door, not even sparing the bouncer a glance as her two friends follow her. She's a tiny thing, probably only about 5'3", but from her scent I wouldn't want t be whoever she's here to see. She's wearing little short shorts that give me a good view of her a**. She's got a cropped hoodie on that shows off her slim, fit waist. But her hood is pulled up so I can't see her face. My eyes follow her until she disappears into the crowd, then I finally return my focus to the bouncer. Kayden and Zack are already pulling out their IDs to hand to this guy and I follow suit.
Once we're finally in, I turn to my pack mates. "What do you think was up with that chick? She looked like she was on a mission and the bouncer didn't even stop her?" I ask.
"No clue, man, but focus on the job right now. We don't need any distractions right now. Let's make a lap of the room, grab some water from the bar or something, and see if we can see anything," Kayden says. We follow his lead through the crowd. We keep an eye out for anyone suspicious in the crowd, but I can't see anything. Everyone in the crowd is talking about the return of this Belladonna person. They're so excited about it that they're not even paying attention to the fight happening in front of them. Well, at least one person is paying attention, actually. It's the girl from the door.
Her friends are standing behind her. One is a tall man with buzzed black hair and glasses. His arms are crossed like he's standing guard, and I can see tattoos peeking out from under his short-sleeved shirt. The other is another girl. She has brown hair that she has down to her waist in curls. She's dressed in skinny jeans and a cropped top and also seems to be keeping track of her surroundings, just like the guy beside her. Lemons, as I have decided to call the hoodie chick, is facing the ring and not looking anywhere else. Her hoodie is still covering her face so I can't see what kind of expression she's wearing, but for some reason I want to know what she's thinking. Suddenly, she turns to her friends and nods before walking away, towards the locker rooms. It was so quick I could't catch a glimpse and I curse in frustration.
I tap Kayden on the shoulder and nod my head towards the two still standing by the ring. He watches them for a moment before nodding. We move to stand behind them. They're not behaving like anyone else here, which means they could be a lead for us to follow. We won't know until we gather more information, but being this close to them, we should be able to listen to their conversation without them knowing.
"It's not fair, babe! She fought for her freedom, and he just called her back like their deal meant nothing? She shouldn't have to do this s*** again!" The girl is complaining. I'll be honest, I have no idea what she's talking about.
"I know you're frustrated, love. But Bells is smart, she'll find a way to be done with the circuit for good. You know she will." He reassures her while wrapping an arm around her shoulders. My pack mates and I look at each other with raised brows and I know we're on the same page. If we don't get any good information tonight, we might have just found an in for more information. If these two and their friend aren't fans of this particular circuit, then they may be willing to help us shut it down.
