Chapter 1
Lyra’s POV The mountain air is so cold it burns my throat with every jagged breath, but it is nothing compared to the ice tearing through my chest. "Damon... please..." I drag myself across the frozen earth, my fingernails splitting against rocks buried beneath the snow. My blood—warm, thick, and metallic—soaks through my torn sweater, leaving a crimson trail behind me. A few yards away, the creature that attacked me lies motionless, its black fur matted with dark blood. But I am not looking at the dead wolf. I am looking at my husband. Damon Vance stands at the edge of the clearing, immaculate in his charcoal wool coat. He isn’t looking at me. His arms are wrapped around Chloe, who is sobbing hysterically into his chest, clutching a minor scratch on her forearm. "Damon..." I reach out a trembling hand, the mind-link between us flickering like a dying candle. I’m bleeding out. She lured me out here. It was a setup— The mind-link snaps shut. Damon severing the connection hits me like a physical blow, driving the remaining air from my lungs. He finally turns his head, his cold grey eyes sweeping over my broken body on the snow. There is no horror in his gaze. No panic. Only a profound, suffocating disgust. "Stop dramaticizing it, Lyra," Damon’s voice carries across the howling wind, completely devoid of warmth. "Chloe is severely traumatized. I told you to stay in the cabin, but you always have to make everything about yourself." "She... she threw the scent-marker on me..." I gasp, crimson spittle catching on my lips. "The rogue... she summoned it..." "Enough!" Damon’s voice snaps with Alpha authority, the heavy pressure slamming down on my fragile chest and forcing my face into the snow. "Chloe is an Alpha heiress. She doesn't need to lie. You’re a human orphan who should be grateful I ever gave you my name. I’m taking her to the pack clinic. The enforcers will be here for you eventually." He turns his back on me. "Damon!" I scream, but it comes out as a wet, pitiful rasped plea. He doesn't look back. He sweeps Chloe up into his arms, leap-bounding across the treeline with his superhuman speed, leaving me alone in the dark. The cold settles into my bones. My vision begins to blur, fading to a heavy, suffocating static. Six years. Six years of running his corporate empire in the dark. Six years of taking the fall for his mistakes, shielding his pack’s finances, and loving him in silence—only to die like a stray dog in the snow so his "true mate" can take my place. If there is a goddess... I think, my heart giving one final, agonized flutter against my ribs, let me burn it all down. A sharp, searing heat suddenly erupts in the deep center of my chest. It isn't the cold of death. It is an ancient, blinding fire, shattering something deep inside my soul with the sound of breaking glass. White light consumes my fading vision, blinding, hot, and infinite— I gasp, my lungs expanding violently as air rushes back into my throat. I sit up abruptly, my hands slamming down against a smooth, polished surface. My heart is hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird. I scramble backward, my hands flying to my stomach, searching for the jagged, bleeding claw marks. Nothing. My skin is smooth beneath a soft, silk blouse. No blood. No snow. No freezing mountain wind. Instead, the rich scent of cedar, expensive leather, and amber fills my nose. I blink through the sudden light, taking in the massive floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the glowing city skyline below. A heavy mahogany desk. A rain-streaked window. The penthouse office. "Are you done throwing a silent tantrum?" The voice hits me like an electric shock. I snap my head up. Damon stands on the other side of the desk. He looks younger, his dark hair immaculately styled, wearing a three-piece suit without a single wrinkle. He is holding a sleek black fountain pen in his right hand. My breathing stops. This office... this suit... I glance down at the mahogany desk. Resting on the polished wood is a thick legal document stamped with the Vance Enterprises emblem. PRE-NUPTIAL AND SEPARATION AGREEMENT. My hands begin to tremble, but not from fear. From absolute, paralyzing shock. Three years ago. This was the exact night Damon forced me to sign away my rights as CFO, stripping my name from the company charter right before he announced our "informal" marriage to the pack elders. The night he officially turned me into a slave in his house. "I don't have all night, Lyra," Damon says, his tone dripping with the familiar, condescending impatience that used to make me shrink back in shame. He tosses the pen onto the desk. It rolls, stopping inches from my hand. "The board wants a clean restructuring. Sign the waiver, vacate the residential suite by tomorrow morning, and I’ll ensure your monthly allowance remains intact. Don't make this difficult." He steps closer, bracing his hands against the desk, leaning down to unleash his heavy Alpha aura. In my past life, his Alpha aura was absolute law. It used to make my knees buckle, forcing tears to my eyes and obedience into my throat. He expects it now. He is waiting for me to break, to cry, to beg him to tell me what I did wrong. Damon pushes his aura out, a suffocating wave of dominant pressure designed to crush my human will. Nothing happens. Inside my chest, the ancient, hot fire I felt right before I died sparks to life. It rises like a roaring shield, absorbing Damon’s Alpha pressure and vaporizing it into absolute nothingness. I don't feel intimidated. I don't feel small. In fact, looking at him now, his Alpha aura feels laughably weak. Damon frowns, a flicker of confusion crossing his face when my shoulders don't slump. "Lyra? Did you hear me?" I look at his face. Really look at him. I see the subtle, arrogant curl of his lip, the dead, transactional look in his eyes, and the utter lack of respect he has kept hidden behind a polished facade. This was the man I bled for. This was the man I died for. A low, cold chuckle escapes my throat before I can stop it. Damon’s eyebrows knit together. "What is so funny?" "Nothing," I say softly. My voice is steady. Dangerously steady. "Just... realizing how much time I wasted." I reach out and pick up the black fountain pen. I uncapped it with a sharp, decisive snap. Damon relaxes slightly, a smug, satisfied smirk appearing on his face as he prepares to watch me submit. "A wise decision. It’s just business, Lyra. Don't take it—" I don't even let him finish the sentence. I flip to the final page of the contract, sign my name in sharp, elegant cursive, and drag the pen across the line with smooth precision. Lyra Linwood. I cap the pen and toss it onto the papers. Then, with a flick of my wrist, I slide the heavy stack of documents back across the smooth marble table, straight into his chest. Damon catches the papers, his jaw dropping slightly as he stares down at my signature. He blinks, clearly caught off guard by the total absence of tears, arguments, or begging. "You... you're not going to fight it?" "Why would I?" I stand up smoothly, brushing an invisible speck of dust from my pencil skirt. The tremor in my hands is completely gone, replaced by a terrifying, crystal-clear calm. "You want me out of Vance Enterprises? Done. You want me out of your life? Even better." "Lyra, if this is an act to get more money—" "Keep your allowance, Damon," I cut him off, looking him dead in the eye. "I don't want a single cent of your money. In fact, keep everything. The apartment, the title, the pack status." I step out from behind the desk, walking toward the private elevator. Damon turns around, his face flushing with a mix of offense and deep irritation at losing control of the interaction. "You have ten minutes to clear your things from the suite!" he calls out, his Alpha command lacing his voice once again, trying to force a reaction out of me. "If you aren't gone, the guards will throw you out!" I stop at the elevator doors, press the button, and look back over my shoulder. A slow, icy smile spreads across my lips. "Ten minutes?" I say softly, my voice echoing off the glass walls. "Damon, I only need five. Because when I take everything you own... I won't even need to step foot in this building to do it." The elevator doors slide open with a soft chime. I step inside, turning to face him as the heavy glass doors begin to close. Damon stands in the center of his massive office, holding the signed divorce papers, staring at me with a sudden, unexplainable look of dread creeping into his eyes. As the doors seal shut, my phone buzzes in my pocket. I pull it out. An alert from my private offshore account flashes on the screen, followed by an encrypted notification from a restricted global server: INITIAL CAPITAL UNLOCKED: $500,000,000. SYSTEM QUERY: WELCOME BACK, OPERATIVE VALKYRIE. WHAT IS YOUR FIRST ORDERS? I stare at the glowing screen as the elevator plunges down toward the street, a dark, lethal warmth expanding in my veins. "First order," I whisper to the quiet elevator, my eyes flaring a faint, luminous silver in the dark reflection of the glass. "Buy every debt contract attached to the Vance family name."
