Chapter 1
ASHINA
When a wolf turns eighteen, they get to find their mate. It took me until I was twenty-two to discover mine. When I finally meet the one, I expect him to be the love of my life. Never in a million years did I think I'd have to reject him at my graduation party. We haven’t even begun yet, and it’s over between Tyr and I.
“I, Ashina Alberty, daughter of the Alpha of Crescent Moon Pack, reject you, Tyr Holt, as my mate.”
As the pain coursed through me, I felt my heart break into a thousand pieces. He simply winced, so I can't tell if he's experiencing the same discomfort. Perhaps he just became an expert actor.
“I, Tyr Holt, Beta of Lunar Moon Pack, accept your rejection.”
I felt as though all ties between us had been cut. The pain was magnified by the passionate embrace and kiss he gave Connie. I found him in bed with my cousin just a few hours after finding out he was my mate. Although I am three years younger than him, I suspected that he knew I was his mate. Maybe he knew for quite awhile. As he waited for me to realize he was mine, did he think it was okay to play around the field? That, or he really didn't give a hoot.
Maybe he really didn't give a damn. Perhaps he never really wanted me to begin with.
His older brother Tre warned me, but I did not listen. Why would I listen to someone who's not mated himself? And he's thirty! Besides, he's always the serious one. Growing up, he would rather read books under the tree than play with me and Tyr. I think that's the most hurtful part of all these— losing a friend in the process. Tyr was always there for me and I couldn't imagine life without him.
Whenever my friends and I went out, I was always jealous that they always had a date, so I started asking Tyr to come along. He'd laugh and joke while his arm was around me. My group of friends assumed we were an item. It didn't matter if it was official or not. The fact that I wasn't alone was the most important thing.
There are benefits and drawbacks to being an only child. Although I am the center of my parents' universe and frequently receive expensive presents, there are times when I really wish I had a sister with whom I could discuss the events of the day. Connie and I were close but I noticed that she always liked the same things as me. There is nothing wrong with that except when it comes to men, she is the same way. Connie always ends up dating the guy I have a crush on or something to that matter. It's petty for some, even for me. But if it happens every time, something is wrong. Not to mention I feel weird about it.
"Should I start by saying I told you so?"
It was Tre I saw in the room. His room. The walls are painted gray just like his eyes. His hair looked wet like he had just finished a shower. He closed the book he was reading and stared at me. If I was not comfortable around him then, it's worse now. I don't know what kind of a joke this is, but it's not funny. His scent is drawing me to him. The smell of pineapple and cinnamon is like that being served at Brazilian restaurants.
"Don't fight it. I know, it's weird." Tre smirked. Great. I'm going to reject another mate twice in less than twenty-four hours.
"I don't know what you're talking about." He raised a brow at me. I looked away and saw his framed photo with his ex-girlfriend. What was her name again? Sherry? Cherry? Damn. All I know is that the woman died from lupus. She was human. "How did I end up in your room? I should go home. What time is it?"
Tre got up and walked towards me. He sat on the side of the bed and gave me a serious look. "You don't remember?"
"I remember rejecting your brother. Connie was there." I rolled my eyes as I took his comforter off me. That's when I realized I was wearing his shirt and I only had my underwear on. I saw him swallow twice. "Where are my clothes?"
"Being washed. You were right. Connie was there when you rejected my brother. After the graduation party at your house, you heard Tyr was throwing a party with his friends here. You and Connie invited yourselves. You had a few shots of tequila and decided to use the washroom. When you came out, you saw Tyr and followed him. You were hesitant to open the door, but you did anyway and you caught him with Connie.
"And you know all these things how?"
"Have you forgotten that I am the Alpha of the Lunar Moon pack? I know everything that's happening here."
"Okay. But how did I end up in your bedroom? You still haven't answered that." I feel irritated and his scent just keeps invading my system, which makes it worse.
"After you rejected him, you started walking away. I don't know where you got the strength, but usually, when you reject someone, it drains your energy. That's what I was told anyway. I've never been rejected, so I don't know the feeling. Anyway, you felt dizzy and you were about to fall on the ground when I caught you. Unfortunately, you threw up and some went to your clothes... and to mine."
Yuck. That's embarrassing.
"So, do you want to talk about this now or should we wait until you're sober?"
I frowned at him. "If you wanted me to reject you now, just say so."
He looked at me coldly. "I am not going to ask you to reject me. And even if you reject me, I will not accept it, Ashina."
