**Title: The Red Door** --- **Chapter 1: The Invitation** It was a chilly October evening when three friends—Jenna, Lily, and Mia—found themselves at the edge of the old Winthrop estate, a sprawling mansion with a reputation for being haunted. The sun had set, leaving the sky a dark, foreboding gray, and the only light came from the waxing crescent moon casting eerie shadows across the overgrown lawn. They were there because of an invitation—an envelope with no return address, containing only a single line: *"Come find what’s hidden behind the red door."* Jenna, the leader of the group with her bold nature, had suggested they explore the estate. Lily, the skeptic, had reluctantly agreed, while Mia, who was prone to anxiety, had only joined out of a sense of loyalty. The mansion loomed in the distance, its dilapidated structure barely visible through the thickening fog. "Are you sure this is a good idea?" Mia asked, her voice wavering as they approached the entrance. "We've come this far," Jenna said, pushing open the rusted iron gate with a creak that echoed through the empty air. "Let's at least take a look." The estate's grandeur had long since faded, and what remained was a shell of its former self. The once-immaculate garden was now a tangled mess of weeds, and the windows of the mansion were boarded up with old wooden planks. The girls made their way up the cracked stone steps and reached the front door, which was heavy and weathered but surprisingly intact. "Let's find that red door," Jenna said, leading the way as they stepped inside. The air was musty and cold, and the interior was shrouded in darkness, save for the occasional beam of moonlight that filtered through the gaps in the boarded windows. They explored the grand foyer, its once opulent decor now covered in layers of dust and cobwebs. The walls were lined with faded portraits of stern-faced ancestors whose eyes seemed to follow their every move. Lily rolled her eyes at the clichéd atmosphere. "Seriously, guys, this place is just old. There's nothing supernatural about it." "Maybe," Mia said, hugging her arms to her chest. "But I still feel like we shouldn't be here." Ignoring Mia's apprehensions, Jenna led the way deeper into the mansion. They found their way through a series of rooms—each one more decayed than the last—until they reached a narrow hallway lined with several doors. It was at the end of this hallway that they saw it: a single door painted a bright, almost garish red, standing out starkly against the decaying surroundings. "That has to be it," Jenna said, her eyes gleaming with excitement. Lily's expression was less enthusiastic. "It’s probably just a maintenance door or something. I mean, why would anyone want to hide something behind it?" "Only one way to find out," Jenna replied, reaching for the doorknob. The door was surprisingly cold to the touch, and as Jenna turned the knob, the hinges groaned in protest. The door swung open to reveal a narrow staircase descending into darkness. "After you," Jenna said, gesturing for Lily and Mia to go first. "Why do I always get picked for this?" Lily grumbled but took the lead, with Mia following closely behind. Jenna brought up the rear, her flashlight cutting through the darkness as they descended the stairs. **Chapter 2: The Descent** The stairs led to a small, dimly lit basement. The walls were lined with old, moldy bricks, and the floor was covered in a thick layer of dust. The air was heavy and oppressive, and the smell of decay was overwhelming. In the center of the room stood a large wooden chest, its surface intricately carved with symbols and designs that seemed almost alive in the flickering light. Jenna moved closer, her curiosity piqued. "Looks like this is what we were meant to find," she said, examining the chest. It was old and worn, but the craftsmanship was impressive. The symbols etched into the wood were unfamiliar, and an unsettling feeling seemed to radiate from the chest. "Maybe it’s better if we just leave it alone," Mia suggested, her voice trembling. "Come on, Mia," Jenna said, brushing aside her friend's concerns. "We’ve come this far. Let’s see what’s inside." With a final, defiant glance at Lily and Mia, Jenna unlatched the chest. The lid creaked open slowly, revealing a collection of old, yellowed papers and a dusty book. Jenna gingerly picked up the book, its cover adorned with the same strange symbols as the chest. "Guys, look at this," she said, flipping through the pages. The book was filled with handwritten notes and illustrations depicting strange rituals and symbols. As Jenna read aloud, a chill swept through the room. “‘The binding of spirits, the opening of realms…’” Jenna read, her voice trailing off. “This is some kind of ritual book.” Lily peered over her shoulder, her skepticism now mixed with unease. “Rituals? What kind of rituals?” Jenna continued reading, her eyes widening as she came across a passage detailing a ritual to “summon and bind the spirit of darkness.” The text was fragmented and difficult to understand, but the implications were clear. “Guys, this is seriously freaky,” Jenna said, closing the book with a snap. “We should probably get out of here.” As they prepared to leave, the room seemed to grow colder. The temperature dropped rapidly, and a low, rumbling sound began to echo through the basement. The girls exchanged nervous glances, their earlier bravado giving way to fear. “What’s happening?” Mia asked, her voice rising in panic. “I don’t know,” Jenna said, her own voice trembling. “But we need to get out of here, now.” The girls hurried up the stairs, but as they reached the top, they found the door leading back to the main floor was now firmly shut. Panic set in as they pushed and pulled at the door, but it wouldn’t budge. “We’re trapped!” Lily exclaimed, her voice breaking. “We need to find another way out,” Jenna said, trying to stay calm. “Let’s search the rest of the basement.” They moved through the darkened space, searching for any sign of an alternate exit. The basement was a labyrinth of old storage rooms and forgotten relics. As they explored, they found more strange symbols etched into the walls, their meaning still unclear but undeniably unsettling. In one of the storage rooms, Mia stumbled upon an old mirror, its surface covered in a thick layer of grime. As she wiped it clean, she saw something behind her—a shadowy figure that seemed to flicker in and out of view. “Mia, what’s wrong?” Jenna asked, noticing Mia’s pale face. Mia pointed to the mirror, her voice barely a whisper. “There’s something…someone behind us.” The girls turned, but the room was empty. They exchanged anxious glances, the sense of dread growing stronger. Jenna tried to keep her fear in check as she led them back to the main basement area, hoping to find another way out. As they returned to the central room, they noticed that the large wooden chest was now slightly ajar. The book and papers were gone, and in their place was a single, handwritten note. “*You should not have come. Now, you belong to us.*” **Chapter 3: The Unraveling** A cold, oppressive silence settled over the basement. The note seemed to pulse with an eerie energy, and the shadows on the walls seemed to grow longer and darker. “What does that even mean?” Lily asked, her voice filled with fear. “I don’t know,” Jenna said, trying to keep her composure. “But we need to find a way out of here.” As they continued to search for an exit, they noticed something strange. The walls of the basement seemed to shift and change, the passages growing narrower and more convoluted. The familiar layout of the basement was now a disorienting maze. Desperation set in as they wandered through the twisting passages, each turn only leading them further into the darkness. Their flashlights flickered, and the air grew colder with each step. “Is this some kind of sick joke?” Lily shouted, her frustration boiling over. “There has to be a way out of here!” “I don’t think this is a joke,” Jenna said, her voice barely above a whisper. “We’re dealing with something much worse.” Suddenly, the rumbling sound from earlier returned, growing louder and more intense. The basement seemed to vibrate with an otherworldly energy. The girls stopped, their hearts pounding in their chests. “Listen,” Jenna said, her eyes scanning the darkness. “Do you hear that?” A faint, distorted whisper filled the air, growing louder and more insistent. The whispers seemed to come from all directions, a cacophony of voices speaking in languages they couldn’t understand. The girls huddled together, their fear mounting as the whispers grew louder and more frenzied. The shadows on the walls began to writhe and twist, forming grotesque shapes that seemed to reach out toward them. “We need to stay together,” Jenna said, her voice firm despite her own fear. “We’ll get through this if we stick together.” As they moved through the maze, the whispers seemed to follow them, growing more frantic with each step. The girls felt an overwhelming sense of dread, as if something unseen was closing in on them. In a moment of panic, Mia tripped and fell, her flashlight scattering across the floor. The darkness seemed to close in around them, and the whispers grew louder, more chaotic. “Mia!” Jenna
