PROLOGUE
"Davis!" Vlad called out as he slid to a stop and Crawled up to where Davis' body lay still on the cold snow. A small spray of blood stained the bright white blanket of snow around his head area. Davis groaned softly and started to turn over to face Vlad. Vlad struggled to pull the mass of a boy up and rest him against the bark of the tree he'd tumbled into. Stay down!" Davis pulled Vlad back down as he was trying to get to his feets. Vlad looked at Davis in frustration, a confused look on his face. Davis was just about to explain when they heard it. [Lady screams] Davis and Vlad exchange glances. They crawled a few feets into the woods and that's where they saw it. An aged man with silver coloured hair stood with his back to them, in a navy blue suit and a walking cane in his right hand in front of him. Next to him, stood a five foot-four tall brown fur coloured wolf with its tail in the air, moving from East to west of its arsenal. In front of them, a slender brunette in a blue skirt suit knelt beside a man with the build of a boxer with a white BIC polo on black denim jeans. He also was on his knees. He had this lost look in his eyes as he spotted Davis and Vlad in their hiding place that said -whatever you do, don't make a sound. "Please sir… just one week and I'll get what you want!" The lady begged desperately. Her palms rubbed against one another as she begged. "There's absolutely nothing more you can do for me, love." The aged man tapped the end of his walking cane against his right foot and the wolf beside him started moving towards the woman who in turn, got to her feets and took off in the opposite direction screaming. The wolf kept on advancing slowly as it watched its prey run aimlessly. Suddenly, it broke into a run and took a leap at the woman l, bringing her down to the snow. The helpless woman tried fighting off the beast but in one bite, the wolf disembodied her head from the body and tossed it to the side. The old man clapped his hands in excitement. "Bravo! This is art." Without hesitation, the beast turned around and went for the man in jeans. Vlad and Davis watched in disarray and horror as the wolf ripped the man into shreds while the man screamed non stop. "Back out slowly and quietly." Vlad told Davis in a whisper as they started crawling out of the forest. [Twig snaps underneath Davis' weight] they both paused and exchanged glances. "Kill them!" The old man's voice rang out. Without thinking, Vlad and Davis jumped to their feets and started running through the forest towards the foot of Mount Logan. "Vlad!" Davis shouted Vladimir's name in alarm to warn him but it was too late. Vlad turned to weigh his options and the huge brown wolf landed on him. Adrenaline rushed through every inch of his body as he held the beast's mouth ajar to escape losing his head like the lovely lady back there. Still struggling to stay alive, Vlad couldn't hear what Davis was yelling because of the constant growling of the beast on him. [LOUD ANGRY ROAR] Vlad turned in Davis' direction, the direction of the roar and saw a humongous drooling gray wolf, about two times bigger than the brown one he was trying to fight off, running in his direction. "Davis?" The name rang in his head as he tried putting two and two together. The gray wolf hit the brown one off Vlad. The brown wolf slid down Vlad's far left. Vlad got to his feet, still in bewilderment as the gray wolf, almost reaching his shoulder, scanned him for injuries. Seeing that they were both distracted, the brown wolf can back with a very fast and powerful slap. The gray wolf got in front of Vlad to shield him and was sent flying. The brown wolf followed to finish its attack as the gray one hit a tree, but was sent to the ground by a deep side punch from a now very passed Vladimir. Steam visibly escaped his body as he growled slowly but loud under his breath. His head bowed slightly. His four canine teeth had suddenly elongated. His beautiful flame blue eyes glowed brighter and his body quaked violently. The stubborn brown wolf who didn't seem to recognise fear from rage, came at him and was taken off guard by Vlad. He crouched and caught the beast by the throat, flinging it back in the direction it came from. It slammed its body into one of the big pine trees and let out a loud but soft shriek. It managed to get to its feets, whimpering and dashed into the darkness of the trees. Panting, Vlad turned around to face the gray wolf and saw the enormous amount of steam coming out of the wolf's body. Vlad arched his head to the right as he noticed the once great beast begin to shrink in size from till what was left was the annoying Davis, bending over, naked. "Get dressed." "Are you hurt?" Everyone rushed to meet Davis as he walked towards the small group in front of Vlad's car. Both Vkad and Davis quietly walked past the group and got into their respective cars. "What's up with them?" Mel asked in confusion as she, Jes and Will watched them get behind the wheels of their respective cars. "Get in the bloody car Jes!" Davis honked the horn of Jes' car as he yelled. Too confused to argue, Jes got into the passengers front seat while Mel and Will hopped into Vlad's truck that was already rolling slowly in reverse. Both cars sped out of the reserve as though they were been chased. No-one knew if there were reinforcements so they weren't about to sit docks and find out. "You know, there's nothing actually wrong in been a year or two older than the rest of us." Vlad said as Davis walked into his room and shut the door behind him. Davis sighed deeply and slumped onto Vlad's computer chair. "I only moved back to Haines because Jes' dad asked me to. Fitting in wasn't exactly a piece of cake." He toyed with the pencil holder as he spoke. "What was the changing like for you?" Vkad pulled open his table top freezer and took out two cans of cake and two jig bags of chips. He tossed a can and chip to Davis before falling on his bed lazily. [DRINK FIZZES AS DAVIS POPS THE LEAD OPEN.] "Painful as hell." Davis took a long gulp from his drink. "You explained pretty much everything the other day.the only thing you missed out is that it's bloody painful either way." "He paused to stuff his face with chips. "Tell me something…" Vlad suddenly sat up straight. Davis didn't shift his gaze from the chips in his hands. "What exactly determines the size and height of a werewolf… I mean, when we transform?" Davis shakes the chip bag and discovers that it's empty. In disarray, he gulps down the rest of his drink and sets the empty can on the desk beside him. "I really can't say…" Vlad's left eyebrow draws upwards towards his hairline in shock as if to say -ARE-YOU-SERIOUS?" Don't give me that look. It's not like I'm some lycantropher, who studies the evolution of all lycans_'' Vlad smiled coyly at Davis' frustration. "Bro… There's no such thing as lycanthropher. Lycanthrophy is the study of lycans." Vlad chuckled. "Stop speaking Jasons." Avis sighed and turned his face away from Vlad to hide his smile. "Explain something to me Vlad." Davis' expression suddenly turns serious. Vlad squeezes the can of coke in his hands and tosses it in the bin at the door. "How exactly were you able to beat that brown wolf?" Vlad shrugged his shoulders to say he didn't know how he'd done it. "With my experience as a lone wolf and the training I've gone through since I moved back to Haines, there's no way I would have handled that beast like you did." Davis was now pacing Vlad's room, trying to wrap his mind around the situation. I only acted on impulse. That thing was going to rip you in shreds." Vlad tried to explain. Davis' pacing was beginning to get on his nerves. "Brown wolves are the fastest and most cunning there are. You just expect me to believe that you, by some miracle, not only caught a brown wolf mid way into its attack but also beat it senseless into retreat." Vlad still looked ignorant to the fact. Davis suddenly pulled his chair towards Vlad and sat as close to his face as possible. Vladimir tried moving backwards, away from Davis to avoid the unnecessary closeness between them. "You turned halfway, Vlad… I saw it with my own two eyes!" Davis caught Vlad by the wrist and turned his palm upwards to face the ceiling. "There's a saying among the Wilberk folk, about a were-wolf who's eyes flame like brimstone fire. His fur coat, as white as the very snow we walk upon and can turn halfway." Davis' voice deepened almost to a whisper as he spoke. Vlad had an intense look on his face as he listened to what Davis was saying but suddenly burst out laughing as Davis stopped talking. "Load of crap!" Vladimir wiped tears from his eyes as he tried hard to stop laughing. Davis looked hurt as he watched Vlad laugh his spleen off at what he had just said. "Ti's is some serious s**t. I'm not even capping." Davis slapped Vlad's leg and got up from the chair. Vlad, still laughing, gets up and follows him while holding his knees for support as he walks. "We don't even know what color my fur will be…I mean, given my silver coloured hair, I'd most likely be a silver wolf like Jes' mom, satomi." Davis shakes his head in disappointment. "You have no idea." Vladimir gently pushed him towards the door. "No, I don't… we'll know the color of my fur in two months at the changing. I'll personally totter over to where you are and rub my fur against your leg. There's no rushing what is to come." Vlad opened the door and pushed the revolting Davis out of the room and closed the door behind them. "You still haven't told me what happened the other day that made you and Davis rush back to the car and leave the way you did." Mel leaned near Vlad two days later during the AP biology class. Vlad gave her a distant look that said he wasn't ready to talk about it. "Vladimir! Would you like to share with the class what's more important than today's lesson?" The model looking AP biology teacher rested her right hip against her table. Vladimir looked up at the woman with his lips slightly apart as if to answer the question. Rather, he shook his head in frustration, exhaled deeply and shifted his gaze from the woman's face to the white board behind her. "I thought not." The teacher pushed her weight off the table with her hip and went back to the white board. "Sorry!" Mel smiled sheepishly as Vladimir's intense irritated gase landed on her. Vladimir turned back to face the teacher at the white board. "Just above the third and fourth vertebrae column…" Vladimir's thought slipped back to what he'd seen the other day at the mountain.
