Unravelling
MAYA’S POV
As the cacophony of voices echoed through the opulent halls, I couldn’t help but roll my eyes. Would these people ever cease their incessant chatter, even as the wedding loomed closer?
Such is the curse of being born into wealth and power. The media and paparazzi never grant a moment’s peace.
Just one more month, and it’ll all be over. Just one more month, I’ll have to endure this.
All for the sake of my insufferable brother, Zac. If only he hadn’t fallen so foolishly in love with Natalie.
I had always dismissed her as another fleeting fancy of his, but this time, he surprised me by making a worse decision than ever before.
Of all people, Zac had to choose the town’s wealthiest heiress, who doesn’t give a care. It was karma at its finest.
Nat and I barely exchanged words, but beneath the veneer of civility lay a deep-rooted animosity.
The disdain was mutual, a silent agreement forged the moment Zac introduced her as his girlfriend. The venomous glances we exchanged that night spoke volumes about our mutual hatred.
Strip away the Watson name, and perhaps Nat would be tolerable, even human.
The same couldn’t be said for the rest of her deceitful family, especially that scoundrel Aiden Watson.
They were all cut from the same cloth of deceit and manipulation.
“Ugh! I hate them,” I muttered under my breath, the frustration boiling over
“You hate who?” Haven, my best friend, interrupted my thoughts
“Oh, you’re back, you sneaky devil! You didn’t tell me,” I exclaimed, enveloping her in a long hug.
She left town for a brief visit to her grandmother’s that turned into an extended holiday.
I’ve missed her.
She is genuinely a loyal and a caring friend. I am glad the day we met, the first day of the freshman year. It was good old days.
“So, who were you cursing with such eloquent anger?” Haven said sarcastically.
“No one, really. I’m just worn out by all the endless chatter and fake smiles as if they actually care about this wedding. All they’re after is some juicy gossip to spice things up,” I exclaimed, feeling the weight of their pretence pressing down on me.
“Hey, calm down. Why not just take a break from all of this? It could do wonders for you, and let’s not forget about your brother. We wouldn’t want to throw a wrench in his plans,” Haven suggested with a gentle smile, her concern evident in her voice.
It might be that I am overreacting to things, but my concerns are real.
Honestly, I’m fraught with anxiety about this marriage. I still can’t shake the feeling that Zac rushed into this.
While Zac isn’t typically one to suffer heartbreak or easily fall victim to others’ whims, this time feels different.
I fear he may find himself wounded. He loves Nat deeply, but one can’t say the same about her.
“Hello!! Don’t leave me hanging?” She demanded.
“Umm... yeah, you are right! I need some time off from all this. So what do you suggest we do?”
“Let’s ju...s..tt...” Just as she was about to voice her plans, Haven’s voice trailed off into silence. The sudden hush enveloped the halls, and the sound of retreating footsteps echoed, signalling an exodus of sorts.
“That was fast,” I remarked, noting the swift response to our unspoken desire.
“You are right. It’s as if your wish was instantly granted,” Haven murmured, her voice tinged with disbelief.
“Don’t be foolish. Let’s see what happened” I suggested, urgency creeping into my tone.
Together, we dashed out of my room and into the corridors adjacent to the main hall. It was the first time in months that these halls had experienced such stillness.
To my astonishment, this silence felt like the calm before a storm. A harbinger of impending chaos.
The halls echoed with the heavy footsteps of Zac as he made his way towards the imposing figure of his mother, Lavina Dyer.
The air crackled with tension, a silent prelude to the storm that was about to break loose.
With a heavy heart and a clenched jaw, Zac approached his mother, steeling himself for the confrontation that awaited him.
“Mother! Please at least give me a chance to explain myself.” He begged
Our mother piercing gaze bore into him, her expression a mixture of disappointment and fury.
“Zac,” she said, her voice cutting through the silence like a knife. “Explain yourself. Why have you called off the wedding?”
Me and haven passed shocked looks.
Honestly, nothing would have made me happier than this news. I never wanted them to get married in the first place. Her vibe gives it away, but right now, I don’t feel the same way.
I do hate Nat, but literally a month before your wedding, your fiancé calls off the wedding. Nobody deserves this kind of heartbreak and humiliation. Not even Natalie.
He clearly has some explaining to do here.
Zac squared his shoulders, meeting his mother’s gaze with steely resolve. “Because Nat was cheating on me,” he declared, his words ringing with bitterness and betrayal.
This revelation made my and haven jaw drop. Well, this is a reasonable reason to call off the wedding. Nobody can blame him for this, but you can’t be very sure about Mrs Dyer.
“Zac! How dare you say that?” Mrs Dyer screamed her lungs out.
Well I personally prefer her as Mrs Dyer rather than our mother because she needs a lot of working on that a prime example this mere moment.
“She cheated on me, the only woman I ever loved cheated on me.” he screamed in agony.
This is the very moment I feared the most. He is getting his heart broken.
Mrs Dyer eyes widened in shock, her perfectly manicured nails digging into the fabric of her gown. “Cheated?” she repeated incredulously. “And you’re just now bringing this to my attention?”
Zac’s jaw tightened, his fists clenched at his sides. “I only found out recently,” he admitted, his voice strained with emotion. “I loved her, Mother. I trusted her with my heart, and she betrayed me.”
As Zac spoke, I lingered in the shadows of the corridor, my heart heavy with sorrow and resentment.
I had always harboured doubts about Natalie, a feeling of unease that had only grown stronger with time.
Listening to the conversation unfolding before my eyes, I just felt a surge of anger bubble up inside me. How could Natalie have deceived Zac so callously? And how could our mother dismiss his pain so easily?
Though Zac is an intolerable person but right now, I am determined to support him in his time of need.
I stepped forward into the hall, with my chin held high and eyes blazing with defiance. “Zac is right, Mother,” I interjected, my voice ringing out clear and true. “Natalie doesn’t deserve him. She never did.”
Mrs Dyer eyes narrowed at the sight of my; her adopted daughter defiance. Her lips pursed in disapproval. “Maya, this is none of your concern,” she snapped, her tone icy with disdain. “You may be living under this roof as one of us, sharing the same surname, but you are not one of us. You would do well to remember that.”
And there she goes
Undeterred by my mother’s harsh words, I stood my ground. Beside me, my best friend Haven stepped forward, a fierce glint in her eyes as she faced off against Mrs Dyer.
“With all due respect, Mrs. Dyer, Maya and Zac are your children, regardless of blood ties,” Haven declared, her voice firm and unwavering. “And they deserve better than to be treated like second-class citizens in their own home.”
I and Zac did nothing to stop our friend Haven. We let her speak the truth. We are too scared to say out loud.
Mrs Dyers nostrils flared with anger, her grip tightening on the hem of her dress “You have no right to speak to me like that,” she seethed, her voice laced with venom. “This is my house, and I will not tolerate this kind of behaviour from anyone, least of all from you.”
But Haven remained firm, unaffected by Mrs Dyer words. Her gaze steady and unwavering. “Maybe it’s time you started treating your children with the respect and love they deserve,” she countered, her voice soft but firm. “Otherwise, you risk losing them for good.”
I and Zac exchanged looks that clearly said “there she said it.” For a moment nobody moved, as the words hung in the air, a tense silence descended upon the hall, broken only by the soft sound of Mrs Dyer laboured breathing.
In that moment, the fragile facade of familial harmony shattered, revealing the cracks and fissures that lay beneath. And amidst the chaos and turmoil, Zac and I found solace in the unwavering support of each other and the loyal friendship of Haven.
