Chapter Five
~April 1~
Never had Alys played whist so poorly. She looked at the measly one trick she had won in the last hand and just shook her head sadly.
“An off day, Duchess?” Lady Colburne asked as they stood at the end of their game.
“It seems so.” Alys gave the girl a little smile. She liked Lady Colburne. She was a very sweet girl. Most of the women of the Ladies’ Wagering Whist Society were. It was really only Mrs. Aldridge who she had problems with—her and that dog! Duchess, indeed! Who ever heard of naming a dog Duchess?
Alys shoved the bothersome idea out of her mind and allowed her thoughts to return to where they’d been all afternoon.
