The Rejection
"I reject you, Lira." The bond snapped before she could even process the words. Pain tore through her chest and vanished just as fast, leaving something worse behind: silence. A hollow, ringing quiet where a mate bond should have lived. Damian didn't blink. "You don't mean that." Her voice barely held, but she made herself say it anyway, made herself stand straight in front of two hundred watching faces instead of folding the way they all expected her to. "The bond only formed tonight." "I felt a mistake." Flat. Final. Like he was reading off a hunting roster. "An Omega who's never shifted can't stand as my Luna." The elders sat still behind him, faces already written with the ending. Whispers moved through the crowd. *Broken. Useless. Everyone knew.* She'd heard those words her whole life in smaller rooms, from fewer mouths. Never like this. Never with the one person who was supposed to want her standing close enough to touch. Then, just above her wrist, the mark went cold. Not faded. Cold, in a way skin shouldn't go cold, like frost creeping under a door. Lira pressed her hand over it and felt it pulse once, wrong, out of rhythm with her own heartbeat. Damian saw it too. His jaw locked. For one second, something flickered behind his eyes that wasn't satisfactory. It was closer to fear, the kind a man doesn't let himself have in front of his own pack, quickly swallowed and covered over before anyone else could catch it. Selene didn't miss it either, and she used it. "Careful, Damian." She slid her hand into his, sweet as poisoned honey. "Don't let her broken little mark make you doubt yourself in front of everyone." She looked at Lira the way someone looks at something already dead. "Some of us were built for this life. You were just built to remind the rest of us what weakness looks like." The crowd laughed, low and ugly. Heat rose behind Lira's eyes, sharp enough to hurt. Not tears. She refused to give them tears. The nearest torches leaned toward her, flames bending like they'd caught a scent, and for one wild second she wanted to lean into whatever was happening instead of away from it. Nobody noticed but Damian. "Get her to the border," he told the guards, and his voice cracked at the edges this time. "Damian." She said his name like a demand, not a plea. She wouldn't beg. Not for him, not in front of all of them. "You saw the mark. Something's happening to me." "Take her." He turned his back before she could see whatever was left in his face, and that turning was worse than the rejection itself. A man could reject a mate and still look her in the eye. He couldn't. The guards' hands closed around her arms. She didn't fight. There was no use fighting men built like walls in front of a pack that had already decided who she was, so she saved her strength for something better and let them march her past the murmuring circle, past elders who wouldn't meet her eyes, past the only home she'd ever known. By the treeline, their grip had already gone loose, more nerves than mercy. Neither one wanted to be standing at this border once the sun finished going down. "This is it." The taller guard kept his eyes fixed over her shoulder, refusing to look at the black wall of trees behind her. "Banished to the Dark Forest. Don't come back." "You're sending me to die." "We're putting you where we were told." His voice wavered on the last word. "Whatever happens next isn't ours to carry." They shoved her over the line and fled toward the torchlight like men running from smoke. Lira stood alone at the edge of it. Cold air through thin fabric. The mark on her wrist was still frozen, still pulsing wrong. She looked back once at Blackthorn, at the pack already turning away, already forgetting her, and felt something harden in her chest where the grief should have been. Fine. Let them forget. She turned toward the trees, because there was nothing left behind her worth staying for, and because some stubborn, furious part of her needed to know what came next more than she needed to be safe. The forest didn't look like trees. It looked like teeth, black trunks leaning together to swallow the moon whole. No birds. No wind. A silence so total it pressed against her ears like water. She stepped in anyway. The second her foot crossed the line, the frozen mark on her wrist caught fire. Not warmth. Fire, real and searing, alive in a way it had never been in twenty-one years of feeling nothing at all. She gasped and pressed her palm against it, and beneath her own skin she felt something move. The mark was rewriting itself. Reshaping into lines that had never belonged to her. Somewhere ahead in the dark, something answered it. A growl, low and enormous, nothing like a wolf's. The forest itself went still around the sound, as if every living thing in it already knew exactly whose voice that was, and exactly what happened to anyone foolish enough to walk toward it. Lira didn't run. She should have. Every instinct in her screamed at her to turn back, rejection or not. Instead, she stood frozen at the edge of everything she used to know, watching the shadows ripple like something massive had just risen onto its feet in the dark ahead of her. Then something moved between the trees. And this time, the growl wasn't coming from the forest. It was calling her name.
