THE PACK WALKED BACK through the forest, past the meeting house. I kept Allara separate from the clusters of pack members who stared at us unashamedly as she passed, walking so that my body sheltered hers from their gaze. It was the least I could do for her. Helpless fury burned its way right to my core. She had been placed in an impossible situation. One that I had inadvertently created. If I hadn’t meddled with her fate, Jaime would be Alpha right now, and she would be safe and sound in the city, none the wiser. In the back of my mind, I knew the situation wasn’t that simple.
