new kid
Tisha shifted nervously in her seat when the new student was asked to share the desk with her. She looked up at the teacher pleadingly. She didn’t like the attention one bit, everyone seemed to be interested in this new guy. The next period passed by and it was recess time, she packed her books and rushed out of the class or almost did until …
“Where are you running to teesha? Are you that hungry?” Chantel asked.
“I have to give Mason’s lunch to him.” Tisha half whispered.
“Oh that, I can give it to him for you, you know.” Chantel said convincingly
“Last time I did that, he got pissed and…”
“Excuse me, can you please show me to the cafeteria?” came the new boy as he pulled Tisha pass the human barrier ahead of her.
She didn’t say anything till they got to the cafeteria and she pulled away from him like he was a plague.
“Thank you.” Tisha said and run off towards her brother.
The only time she can be herself in school is when her brother is around and he will be done with school in a few months’ time.
She has been the most attractive target to bully because of her petite stature and the fact that she doesn’t report her oppressors to the school authorities or even to her parents. She just hopes they will leave her alone one day.
The next classes passed swiftly and finally, another horrible day in the life of Tisha was over. Her desk mate was still sitting after half of the class had exited. Her worse person, Chantel was also waiting for an opportunity to make life a hell for Tisha so she waited right outside the door.
“Can you please walk me outside.” Tisha whispered to him
“Thought you were never going to ask.” He said with a smile and gestured her to follow him.
They walked together to the car park where Tisha smiled and mouthed a thank you to him.
“I am Liam. It’s nice to meet you, Tisha.” He said with a charming smile.
Tisha opened her mouth but no words came out. She has always been like this, the shy scared kid. Unlike her older siblings Hans and Mason, the school’s golden boys and that means the older girls treated her like a friend just to be with her brothers but she never put in any words for them and that made her the victim of perpetual bullying. Because of her brainy nature, she was two years ahead of her age mates. This is another reason why the bullies won’t leave her alone; they just hate the fact that a kid was the top student in the class.
“You must be really shy if you can’t reply me.” Liam said and chuckled.
“I am not that shy, just not used to meeting new people who are nice to me.” She said softly.
“I think it’s safe to leave you now?”
“Yeah, I am safe here. I will wait for Mason in the bookshop over there.” Tisha told him.
Liam was being nice to her because he was new and with time, he will start moving with the popular and annoying kids leaving her without a friend as usual. She didn’t have any expectations so there won’t be any disappointments.
Tisha was tired of pretending her brothers were not in her room disturbing her. Hans was sitting on her legs and Mason was looking at her with a smirk on his face.
“What is your problem, Mason?”
“His name please” he said
“Who?” she asked curiously
“Him.” Hans said showing her a picture on his phone.
She snatched the phone and saw that Mason had sent the pictures and a video of her walking out of school with Liam.
She looked at her brother and wished she could kill him. This boy is the worse human on earth.
“Tell us his name or we will send the pictures and videos to mom and dad.” Hans said.
“Seriously Hans, even you. This kid here is getting you to follow him.” Tisha said shaking her head.
“I saw you walking with him during lunch break and also when school closed you were with him talking: for two whole minutes. Bro don’t tell me I am over thinking…”
“Kids dinner is ready.” Their mom called out from downstairs.
Hans was a little distracted so she pushed him off and run out of her room. She took her seat beside her mom and waited for her mini demonic brothers to join them. Thankfully her brothers didn’t say a word about Liam on the dinner table and even offered to help her wash the dishes.
“What do you have up your sleeves, mini demons.” Tisha asked her brothers.
“Nothing angel.” Hans replied.
“Okay, whatever.” She said and continued washing the dishes.
She still couldn’t believe Mason tricked her into asking Liam to walk her out after school. He had his plans already, that brother of hers always has something to do. He was the one to always walk her out after school but today he decided to play around with her after seeing her with Liam during recess and asking about him. She still felt that it wasn’t fair to do that to Liam. He was genuinely nice to her and she couldn’t bring herself to making him a pawn in her brother’s games. Tomorrow is another day to go out and be made fun of and pretend it’s okay to be treated like trash.
Tisha spent half her prep time reading on how to keep a new friend. Since she started school, Liam happens to be the first new classmate and the first to ignite the passion to make friends in her. She really hopes they can be good friends. The look Mason gave her before getting down was a mischievous one, he banged the door behind him and before she could get close to open it, Hans locked the doors. At this period, she knew her brothers were planning something crazy.
“Hans, seriously? You want me to spend my day trying to forget a prank my brothers used on me” she said softly.
“Not really, sis. Mason is going to call your little boyfriend for me, I just want to meet him.”
“Hans, seriously? He is a new classmate. That is all nothing more. Don’t try to scare him.”
Someone knocked on the window and Hans lowered the glass. There stood Mason with Liam beside him.
“Stay in the car” Hans said and alighted.
“Oh, Liam I am sorry” she said as she waited.
Liam was used to being the new boy, having people want to be his friends, girls trying to get his attention and boys warning him to stay off their girls. He found his desk mate interesting; she didn’t look up from her book throughout his introduction to the class. Not even when the teacher directed him to sit beside her. She was a rare kind and he was interested in knowing her more. He was surprised when she asked him to walk her off, she didn’t seem like someone who would ask for help.
And here he was being interrogated by her brothers. At first, he thought they were going to warn him to stay away from their sister but no, her brothers just wanted to know more about him. Nice way to start a new life in a new school.
“You can get down now.” Her oldest brother said as he opened the door for her.
She got down quickly and turned to look at Mason angrily.
“Dude, you really crossed the line here. Liam is a new student who was nice to me yesterday. Nothing more.” She said angrily.
“Nobody said there was more to that, Hans wanted to meet him. We just wanted to thank him for saving your ass yesterday.” Mason replied.
“Really?” she turned towards Liam and asked.
“Yeah, you’ve got nice brothers.” He said frankly.
“Nice day, you two.” She told her brothers and walked away from them.
“No hugs today?” Hans shouted after her.
“No.” she replied swiftly.
