Chapter 1: A desperate choice.
The rain fell relentlessly over the city, matching the heaviness in Emma Carter's heart.
She stood outside the hospital, clutching a folder filled with unpaid medical bills. Her mother's condition had worsened, and the doctors demanded a payment she could never afford.
Emma had worked two jobs since graduating from college, yet every paycheck disappeared before the month ended. Debt had become a shadow that followed her everywhere.
Her phone rang.
It was her landlord.
"Emma, this is your final warning. If the rent isn't paid tomorrow, you'll have to leave."
"I... I understand," she whispered before hanging up.
She leaned against the hospital wall, fighting back tears.
"I don't know what to do anymore," she murmured.
Inside the hospital, the doctor approached her with a sympathetic smile.
"Miss Carter, your mother needs surgery as soon as possible. Delaying it any longer could be dangerous."
Emma nodded silently.
That night, she sat alone in her tiny apartment, staring at the stack of bills on the table. She searched for jobs, loans, and anything that could save her family, but every door seemed closed.
Just as she was about to give up, her phone buzzed.
Unknown Number
She hesitated before answering.
"Hello?"
A calm male voice spoke.
"Miss Emma Carter?"
"Yes... who's this?"
"My employer has a proposal that could solve all your financial problems."
Emma frowned.
"What kind of proposal?"
"You'll find out tomorrow morning. A car will pick you up at nine."
Before she could ask another question, the call ended.
Emma stared at the dark screen, her heart racing.
Who was this mysterious man?
And why did he know so much about her?
She had no idea that answering that phone call was about to change her life forever.
