THE BEGINNING OF THE END

MALIA'S POV I wouldn't be exaggerating if I said this was the end of my very existence. I was sitting face to face with Alpha Alaric's own father, THE ALPHA RAUL. Just a week ago, I would have never imagined this meeting. I cupped one of my hands with the other one to stabilize the shakiness. I battled with my inner thoughts as the minutes dragged on painfully with no sign of a change in the disgusted expression on Alpha Raul's face. I didn't dare to move a muscle even if I was feeling a bit lightheaded, and I didn't know if Alpha Alaric would come and somehow save the situation. If there was ever a time I needed him most, it would be now. I could practically melt into the ground. I stole the hundredth side glance at Alpha Raul and his expression remained the same…a mix of utter disappointment and disgust. Alaric walked in and I felt the tension in the air drop so fast. He rushed to me, not acknowledging his own father first. “Are you alright, Malia?” He asked me frantically, caressing my cheeks and interlocking his hands with mine. “Look, I'm sorry for…this. I should've warned you, pumpkin” he added, apologizing. I wanted to look up from his face but he kept his eyes on me steadily, distracting me. He knew what he was doing. I wanted to somehow seek the validation of his father that he had refused to acknowledge him and was instead apologizing to me, the town's cursed one. Alaric's trick worked. My eyes remained fixed in his gaze as he continued talking. “This is not your fault, pumpkin. I don't care what you think, it's not. You don't need anybody's validation to be with me. I promise I'll take care of this and we can go back to the way we were this morning” He rambled on, as if he could read my mind. I couldn't muster a single word since my mind was ridden with fear of the unknown. I simply nodded as he pulled me into a hug. A hug I so desperately needed. Then he did the most unexpected thing: he drew my lips into a sultry kiss that immediately eased my nerves. I almost died from the shock. He didn't even care that Alpha Raul was still in the same room as us. I couldn't imagine how much he would want to banish the both of us. In this moment , I knew he would definitely burn the entire world down for me. While Alaric peered into my face, and I in his, Alpha Raul stepped out of the house. He had definitely had enough. Alpha shot a smirk at me. “Time to handle the difficult part” He told me in an almost teasing manner. How could he still manage to find humor in this conflicted moment? I smiled, watching him rush after his father. Suddenly I felt disgusted by myself and how I was barely at Alpha Alaric's residence for a week and was already causing rifts between family members. I rushed upstairs to a different wing and slipped into one of the guest rooms where I sat in a corner and stared at the wall numbly. A few seconds later, I began to hear voices from beyond the walls. I got up and rushed to the window, immediately catching a view of Alpha and Alaric in a heated conversation as I poked my head out a bit. “Why can't you just listen to me, father?! Her mother's past does not define hers! You told me several times about how protecting our people comes first before their mistakes. Why doesn't she get the same treatment? Why does she have to suffer because of what her mother did? She is nothing like the woman!” Alpha Alaric challenged. “You think you are so smart asking smart questions, huh? You want world peace huh? You want me to believe that she should have not been banished the moment she seduced you with the love potion she prepared specially for you? Try asking her who her father is! I'm sure she doesn't even know. It could be anyone of the hundreds of wolves her harlot mother threw herself at! You want to be with a woman whose full history you don't even know? Come on, snap out of this nonsense, son!” Alpha Raul countered. I felt the hot tears run down my cheek seamlessly. Alpha Alaric went quiet for a few seconds. It was a valid point, I couldn't blame him. No matter how much I tried, I would never be accepted. What did I think I would actually change by getting myself involved with the Alpha in the first place? Security? Peace of mind? Right now I wasn't even sure of that. Alpha Alaric let out a huge sigh. I knew he was naturally stubborn but this was beyond him now. “If you wish to treat the woman I love with so much hatred because of the most silly reasons, be my guest. But I want you to know that I won't back down without a fight, father” Alaric warned. “Is that a threat? So an ordinary harlot's daughter has you tied at the tip of her finger and now you're threatening me? I wonder what opinion your son would have of this abomination of a union!” Alpha Raul spat. “My son will respect my wishes as I have taught him to. If it were under different circumstances, I would probably still be married to the woman who gave birth to him right now. But at the end of the day, he is MY son and I have his best interests at heart no matter who I end up in a union with” Alpha Alaric shot back. “So do I. And I hope it's not too late when your eyes are finally opened and you're no longer tied to her charm” Alpha Raul told him, walking away quietly. Then he stopped. “I will no longer have my monthly meetings at this residence. I can't be at a place where I'm barely respected as the older and WISER figure” he added. Then he resumed walking until he got to the car park and into the car he had arrived in. The car drove out of the gates and Alpha Alaric watched it with what I assumed to be a solemn expression. He began to make his way to the entrance of the house and I scurried back to the corner. I didn't know how to feel about this development. No matter how much I loved Alpha Alaric, I wanted to be anywhere but this godforsaken town.
