"Long before the great war, when the elves and fae still lived happily, the fae king pledged his loyalty the the elven queen for peace between both the elves and fae. As a symbol of his loyalty, he had his crown melted and crafted by the most skilled blacksmith he could find into two pendants. The jewels that were embedded in his crown decorated the pendants and were blessed with numerous spells to protect whoever wore them. He gave one pendant to the elven queen, and the other he kept for himself.
He was so smitten by her beauty and called her his moon. That's why the the pendants were moons. Every time he looked at his pendant he was reminded of his queen. She was called the moon goddess. As time passed and their love grew stronger, they each engraved the words my beloved into the back of each pendant. They were inseparable.
When the war broke out, they were each forced to part ways and fight for their kind. Devastated the fae king took the pendant he gave the queen and crushed it, it was thrown into a furnace and melted away. However the king still loved the queen, and kept his pendant with him as he went into battle as a constant reminder of her.
As the king fought on the battle field, the pendant kept him safe from any harm. Slaughtering all elves that crossed his path, he stood face to face with queen. She was covered in blood as she leant against her sword struggling to keep herself up. The king watched as a sword was driven through her torso from behind. He rushed to her side as he carefully lifted her limp body into his arms.
The king realized what he'd done. With no pendant to keep her safe, she bled out on the battle field. The king mourned her death. Outraged the earth released a powerful wave of magic through the queen's body that killed thousands of soldiers, fae and elf alike. Forcing them both to retreat.
The king stayed with her on the field, he killed the woman he was willing to do anything for because of his own anger. The king gave his pendant to the earth, and died next to his beloved. The pendant has never been seen until now."
The silence was heavy in the room.
Evelyn was the first to speak, "I say some greedy scumbag went back for the pendant and took the fae throne."
"That is possible, there is no other way the fae could continue to rebuild their empire without something to prove anyone worthy of the throne." My mother answered. "Did the fae say anything else to you Arya?" My mother asked looking at me.
"No, perhaps he was a spy. With the pendant behind the barriers now, the fae can't come in any more. But I still don't understand how the arrow made its way to the palace."
"I can start questioning some of the watch guards, maybe someone saw something?" Evelyn picked up the arrow and made her way towards the door before pulling me into a tight hug, "I'm just glad you weren't hurt sister."
I hugged her back, and smiled over her shoulder in my mother's direction. She was beginning to look more concerned, I could see the worry in her face. How much did the fae see, what does he know about us? He could be back in his kingdom, sharing whatever he may have learnt with his king. That could be a huge advantage for them.
Suddenly there was a loud knock on the study door, pulling us out of our thoughts. Evelyn opened the door, revealing a knight standing in the doorway with a worried expression on his face. "What is it soldier?" My mother asked first.
"Your majesty," he bowed his head, "there has been reports of movement beyond the forest barriers throughout the day, and just now a... a" He stuttered as he tried to believe what he himself was going to say next.
"What is it?" My mother grew frustrated, she didn't have time for this. "A fae was caught by the night watch."
