“How do you know when you’re near the bottom? Are there any lights in these tubes?” we wonder out loud.
“We didn’t install many lights in here,” Jamie answers, “but we have a system. About fifty feet from the bottom, there’s a green light. This informs the person sliding down to tighten their grip on the pole and slow down. At fifteen feet, a yellow light tells you to put the brakes on, and at five feet, a red light means ‘brace for impact’. We put a safety net at the bottom, so that even if you miss the cues, you’re not going to die. You might seriously injure yourself, but the slide won’t kill you. But it does give you an incentive to keep your eyes open.”
